ITT, predict for the NPD December 2019 retail period (December 1, 2019-January 4, 2020) for U.S. hardware sales.

What is NPD?: NPD is one of the main retail tracking firms in the U.S., and also about the only one who specifically goes into detail on video games sales. This thread is to predict what the NPD hardware sales will be for the most recent month. NPD months are defined by the National Retail Federation (find calendar links here).
What do I win?: Bragging rights. We also keep track of predictions over the year and have an annual contest using "points." Still just bragging rights, but SalesEra followers have fun seeing how well we can do with it. See here for details on the point calculations.
Why are there still predictions when official NPD numbers are not released?
Trust me said:

Hello! This wall of numbers will be comparing the weekly average of November and December. This is where comparing weekly averages is better than simple month to month because December is a 5 week month while November is only 4. I have gathered high selling software and any hardware deals for December to help show how the month might be impacted. You can go to previous prediction threads for the previous month's potential impacts.

Notes
The biggest month of the year in terms of absolute sales. However, December has fallen from November in terms of weekly average as sales concentrate more towards Black Friday in recent years (if you're not Nintendo). December usually has three massive sales days, Cyber Monday (the Monday after Thanksgiving), Green Monday (Smaller Cyber Monday, the second Monday of December) and Super Saturday (Saturday before Christmas). After Super Saturday, holiday spending is over, so there are 4 weeks of holiday sales and 1 post holiday week.

Xbox
The Xbox One sees standard weekly average drops, similar to the Xbox 360, in 2014, 2015, and 2017. 2018 had the largest drop thanks to Cyber Monday week being in the November tracking. 2016 actually saw the only increase during the years covered. This could be because November was an incredibly weak month in terms of software moving consoles and the One S hitting $249.

Xbox One this December was somewhat weird on price. Xbox One X went down to $349 like on Black Friday, but the One S consoles only went down $50 instead of $100. Then after a week they randomly drop the One SAD to $149, so by Super Saturday the pricing was $149/$249/$349.

We should see a more normal December drop this year compared to the abnormal December 2018 result.

Playstation
PS4 in 2014 actually saw a small increase of 3%, but in 2015 had a drop of 18% despite dropping the price $50 for 2 weeks thanks to hardware bundle launches in November. 2016 also saw another increase thanks to the PS4 slim which I think sold much more for the same reason as the Xbox One. Weak November leading to a much better December because of weak software launches and price cuts pushing sales. 2017 saw a massive decrease due to weak price promotions and a comparison to the PS4's highest ever November. As I predicted last year, December 2018 had the worst weekly average drop thanks not only to different tracking period, but the PS4 had absolutely no deals the whole month.

2019 has a $249 drop on the 3 game holiday bundle, and the last year that had a similar deal was back in 2017.

Nintendo
Merry Switchmas and have a great Newtendo Year.

The 3DS averages a rise of +27% with the only drop being -15% (2016) thanks to supply constraints, and the largest rise being +85% (2012).

Nintendo does massive numbers in December. Their products are Christmas gift fodder, essentially. Always a reliable product for the younger demographic.

Nintendo typically see December double November in total sales or around there and it isn't limited to handhelds. Even the Wii U saw these increases.

Switch had a +93% MOM increase in December 2017 with a weekly average increase of +55%, and that was just purely on the selling power of the Switch as a product and evergreen software. 2018 had a more modest +30% MOM, but this would have been higher had Cyber Monday week been in the December tracking like normal. It was also the highest December result since 2010.

2019 doesn't have a massive launch in December like Smash Ultimate in 2018, but Switch has a $199 Lite model as well as continued sales Pokemon.

Recap
December usually increases in total sales from November, but weekly averages see a decrease, unless you are Nintendo.

The biggest December ever recorded in the 7th gen was the Wii with 3,810,000 back in 2009. Second biggest? Wii again with 2,360,000 back in 2010.

The biggest December ever recorded in the 8th gen was the Switch with 1,770,000 in 2018. Second biggest? PS4 with 1,582,000 in 2015.

donny2112, I just noticed a minor issue with your March rankings.

Bitch Pudding is ranked 16th with a delta of 56,000, but should be tied at 31st with a delta of 75,000. I doubt it's impacted anything, but I wanted to let you know in case there's some kind of error with your system.

Gosh, I didn't realise that there was a $100 difference between the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ... 😳

p.s. Any idea what the estimate year to date in North America for all three consoles up until November?

don't get too much into this, but with the estimates we got:

PS4 < 3.05m
XB1 < 2.25m

(USA btw)

What's interesting about these estimated numbers is that if you have followed these NPD threads since the beginning of this generation, you would know (from 2015 up until the end of 2018) that totalling the combined (estimated) numbers for both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One for 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, then finding out the median number would give you a 832,500 units gap between the two.

With your estimates above, these two consoles are, yet again, averaging out at a 800,000 gap for the fifth year running.

Excluding the two (launch) months in 2013; we can surmise that there's got to be a 5 million gap between the two in North America. Interestingly, if the Xbox One sells 800,000 units in December, we can also guess that the Xbox One has sold at least 4 million units worldwide in 2019, by using a 65:35 ratio.

I don't wish to bring a silly 'war' into this thread however, if the Xbox Series X launches in the US before the PlayStation 5, and are a similar-ish price (which I doubt...), then I can see the new Xbox doing quite well for itself next generation, but they will probably continue to struggle globally.

TL;DR — I love talking about sales, even if only two of three companies provide their (proper) numbers.

As it's always been the case, Sony would have to do something incredibly stupid to fail. They have all the momentum imaginable

Switch is pretty hard to predict this month at least for me. It doesn't have huge launch of Smash but on the other hand cyber monday is included. Also in Japan Switch was actually down yoy in December.

donny2112, I just noticed a minor issue with your March rankings.

Bitch Pudding is ranked 16th with a delta of 56,000, but should be tied at 31st with a delta of 75,000. I doubt it's impacted anything, but I wanted to let you know in case there's some kind of error with your system.

The post for Bitch Pudding's prediction says it was edited on April 17, and the predictions were gathered on April 16. What I have for his prediction is Switch - 369K, PS4 - 276K, and XB1 - 202K, which works out to a 56K diff and 16th place. He's also the only person who predicted Switch at 369K that month, so it shouldn't be a case of having crossed the names somewhere. It's probably a result of the edit that his listed prediction is different, then. Thanks!

Last year Switch had 1.36 Mio. in November and 1.77 Mio. in December (so 3.13 Mio for both).

This year Switch had 1.4 Mio. in November. If you consider a 10% increase for that period in general, than its december sales should be at least about 2 Mio. Units.

I would consider everything under 2 Mio. as a bit disappointing for Switch. This was most probably the peak sales year for switch and if it can not manage to sell more than 2 Mio. units in christmas month , then it will never does it again. That would be a shame.

In 2017 Switch had a 94% MOM increase from November to December
In 2018 it only had a 31% increase

2019 will be between those two with an increase most likely closer to 2018 for many reasons. I think between 40% to 50% seem a fair estimate.

I just realized you did not count Wii U in this comparation. :(

Meh... I even looked to see if it was because of an edit, but I didn't see it there. I must have looked at the wrong post or something. I'm glad it was a false alarm.
