There has to be some compromise. I agree with avoiding watering down certain things, but it really depends on specific details. An important factor is where the majority of the party stands on certain issues.
we are past the point of compromise. we are looking at the potential end of human civilization because of anthropogenic climate change, if your position on policy addressing that is anything less than radical you are an enemy, and the party we're talking about refused to exclude fossil fuel PAC money from the climate change committee. that should be completely unacceptable to any reasonable person.

It's like the Chapo Trap House caricature of democratic fumbling ineffectualism has come to life and is currently running ramshod over Tokyo.

They need to understand that she's pretty much the only one that people actually like.

Yep. That's why the GOP especially are scared of her they no one even remotely comparable on their side someone tried to compare her and the best they could come up with was Palin being that the only thing they share is that they are both listed over by them.

She should stay true to herself but be willing to learn, adapt and not be manipulated to undermine herself or the party by activists within or without. She appears to have a good sense of what resonates with people who want progressive change. She understands something new is rising against the status quo and is bringing it forward and helping those that want it find its place and voice.
The article as some have said is probably overstating any problems she likely understands the diversity of the nation well and is more interested in removing moderates in blue strongholds.

It seems to me that AOC has not asked for a correction or a retraction of the story in
Which is irrelevant to the point that someone saying 'this site has printed a false story of this nature previously' is not the equivalent to Republicans calling into question a site just for being liberal and declaring 'well if both sides have a problem with you you must be right' on that basis is, at best, ignorant.

Attacking the "flakey" right worked for Donald Trump, in the bizarro world alternate-universe sort of way.

AOC is using a similar tactic to push a harder-left agenda. Only with more clarity and more sincerity.

Bingo! We are literally on the brink of changes we are 0 equipped to deal with and have been warned about for decades, and people still have the gall to argue for immobilism?

I still don't understand why you're automatically assuming the story was false just because AOC tweeted a denial. That's absurd.

If she were actually concerned with the story being false she'd have demanded a retraction or a correction. She did neither. The story remained up. Politico stands by its accuracy.

Get them all the fuck out, seriously. This is looking like a real generational thing at this point. The sooner Millenials take over, the better. There's a reckoning coming when we take over, and AOC is just the start.

I really hope so, but I have my doubts. Most millennials still can't even be bothered to vote, and for every millennial with a backbone like AOC, there will be plenty of people like Jon Ossoff who let Republicans walk all over them for the sake of being the nice one in the room. And that's ignoring the conservative millennials who will undoubtedly follow in the footsteps of pieces of shit like Milo.

How many progressives primaried incumbent Dems before the midterms and then lost in the general?

And people need to stop acting like the Tea Party was some kind of grass roots, invincible force of nature. Their candidates were backed by a fuck ton of dark money and they lost races they should have won by running candidates that were too far to the right for their district. And they took a bunch of Ls in Congress by being too hard line.

maybe millenials don't vote because the party that should be their advocate has done nothing to address student debt, climate change, and an economy that is rigged against them

hell in many cases (joe biden, hello) they've actively made things worse

Millenials may be flakes, though that's somewhat improving, they are overwhelmingly progressive. That I have no doubt. Gamergating Nazis are the minority in our cohort. Polls/voting patterns have consistently shown that to be true since we've been able to vote, and that's not changing.

They don't like it only because it scares them and that's great. If any Dems are worried she may embolden someone to primary them they ought to look at their policies and course correct sooner rather than later.

This is partially true, yes.

But you still have to play by the rules to get anything of note accomplished in the Senate, unless you get a 60-40 margin*. I don't think many people here understand how her ideas are reviled among most people in the country... For ridiculous reasons, yes, but a lot of her policy ideals are going to be a hard sell in rural America.

* With no blue-dog Dems, or moderates like Manchin.

Exhibit A. How and when do you believe they could have actually accomplished any of these? Even when Obama had a supermajority in the Senate there is no way any of these proposals would have passed. They certainly can't pass now.

They don't vote because of the milquetoast candidates chosen. Bring someone who actually speaks and looks like them will get people interested.

Evidence please.

Progressives lost in right wing districts because dared run in them. Meanwhile centrists have been taking the L a decade. I cant handle all the winning before the midterms. Centrists lost all branches of government at the federal and state level. Senate. House. State legislatures. Governor seats. Presidency. Supreme court.

She responded in the best way she could have. She stood up and had a backbone. Gossip reported by Politico is tabloid bullshit.

So essentially Democrats are criticizing AOC for doing the same thing that everyone gives the Republicans shit for. Choosing between what is right and your party where the party comes first.

Tribalism at its finest.

were any such race losses at the expense of incumbents?

NE-02's primary loser was hoping to reclaim a seat he already lost to an incumbent. i don't think mcgrath's primary opponent was an incumbent.....
we definitely missed some potential pickups by swinging for the fences but idk if we sacrificed any incumbents.

They let someone into the White House who has objectively made all of those things twice as bad than they would be under the worst Democrat. If my generation gave more shits AOC wouldn't be such a huge outlier.

it should be abundantly clear by now that democrats will not win power simply by getting people to vote against republicans. they've tacked to the center and tried that strategy for the last 30 years and it's overall failed pretty miserably.

there needs to be a positive vision to vote for, not simply a boogieman to try and keep out of office. obama did that, even though it was in most ways an empty victory.

Ignoring the feeling this article trying to stir up divisions, especially after the 2016 primary, the leadership would be dumb as fuck to not ride her wave. Let her do her thing as a congresswoman, whip up her following, even if it doesn't line up with the current platform, and that'll only bring benefits. Any hint of shutting her down would make a backlash that is ridiculously counterproductive. She's got a fair few years before she's gonna be gunning for the leadership/presidency so save the fighting for then.

Okay.

I ask the same question: HOW?

"We" can't pass any major legislation without Republican support... Unless, you know, millennials actually understood how the fucking government worked and voted in more Democrats. Instead of blaming them for not passing the legislation that millennials actually want, but are too lazy to vote for.

Anecdotal, I know... But I worked with a hardcore Sanders supporter prior to the 2016 election. She talked about him non-stop, watched all the rallies, phonebanked for him and canvassed... When I asked her how any of his ideas would actually become law she literally had no idea. She didn't know how a bill became law, she just thought that the President could do all of that stuff by him/herself.

I don't know how common that scenario is, but it seems a lot of people just don't understand how the government functionally works.

Yeah, try and put her "in her place" and we'll see how far that goes....

The Dem party NEEDS change. Just because they're mostly right doesn't mean a lot of the stalwart members there aren't in dire need of new energy, new thinking, and new blood.

"nearly 20 lawmakers and aides" is not like... any significant amount of people worth caring about. There's hundreds of Democrat "lawmakers and aides" in Washington.

This article is just trying to divide Democrats, and I guess based on this thread and so many others like it, people fall for it

Good thing that coworker isn't running for office then. But if your moral is if someone doesn't know how government works, then they shouldn't have hopes for certain things, I dunno what to say. I don't know how surgery works but I'd hope to have a good surgeon. I mean isn't that the point of it? It still baffles me we went from "Yes we can" to "no we can't." I guess if you don't want AOC's or Democratic Socialist ideas, then I get it completely, but then you have to ask what the hell do you want? Cuz right now the dem establishment isn't bold at all besides trying to get the GOP out of office, which at least we all agree. But the fight right now is what are we going to do when we do?

They're basically an open mic for anyone in the government, which makes them a mixed bag of ideologies and reputability. Their main bias is towards the dramatic and insideryness.

A fair characterization to be sure, but it can give you a glimpse of what's happening on Capital hill. I feel most of their articles have merit.

What I want is to run strong candidates for their districts. I want to win seats, and then we will test the waters to see what will have enough support to pass. I want a constituency that understands how basic government functions work so they can become more involved, and have realistic expectations.

I'm not even against most of her ideas, honestly, but it's going to be a hard sell for the middle of America. Throw me in the 'incremental progress is better than potentially no progress' camp. If that makes me a moderate, then so be it.

In today's politic, you need the POTUS, the House, and a 60-40 majority of *reliable* votes to get a single fucking thing of merit accomplished. How do we get there? Until we do, these conversations are largely moot.

AOC doesn't need to be dragged down with the wet fart mire of the current Dems, she and other people like her with actual fire need to drag it kicking and screaming into something that can actually take on the Republicans rather than buckle to every bit of pressure they exert.

I'm with you on climate change. I fear for the future for my little ones. The future is looking very bleak and will get far worse before it gets better. I was just as disappointed to see the policy change as well.

I wouldn't go as far as calling anyone an enemy. This is exactly the divisive language the DNC should avoid. This stuff opens the party up to be exploited by external forces.

Yes, AOC needs to fall in line so she can help further the democratic agenda, making sure to pass stuff like pay-go to ensure to progrsssive measures never come to fruition.
