I have to balance out the incredible fanfare it gets here.

J/K but I am tired of the Bayonetta is new DMC mantra that has been going on since the first Bayo came out.
I mean I hate the pissing contest in general and just wish we could enjoy both without people feeling the need to prove which is best because reasons.

After playing the demo, I'm not feeling it... It was just ok.

It remains to be seen whether the final game will be better or not but right now, I don't think it'll touch either B2 or W101.

I feel bad for Itsuno and co. We've got three unique characters and Dante has 100 weapons, but it's simply not enough. However, I'm not sure there's enough money in the world to make a DMC with platforming as good as Mario Odyssey, level design and exploration as good as DS1 and Bloodborne, stealth as good as MGS5/Thief 2/Sekiro, bosses that are all on the level of Vergil 3/Credo/Lady Maria/Ludwig/Orphan of Kos/Slave Knight Gael, with new characters that play like Bayonetta, Ryu Hayabusa and Kratos. While at the same time keeping the combat as good as DMC5's.

I don't see it. But I'm super excited for DMC5 and really enjoyed most of the other ones. It'll definitely be a good game. Can't imagine it being one of the best action games this gen though. It felt like an old game to me for some reason (just going by the demo)

Going by the gifs posted earlier It'll probably feel a ton better when we get Dante or some more abilities than was in the demo. Because the gifs look 8000000 times better than any of the stuff we could do with the demo gameplay.

It's all because of the "best of the best" rhetoric. It's like you have to pick a winner, and therefore a loser or many. You can't help it, this medium isn't mature yet.

I don't see that with movie and music, it's mostly the case video-games.

Pretty sure it happens in movies all the time. Can't talk about action movies here without people reminding everyone else that Fury Road is the best action movie of all time, for instance.

I feel like a lot of more casual players, especially new ones, won't reach the skill ceiling required to see exactly why this is probably the greatest action game ever made. Not hating on anyone or anything, I'm super average and will happily sell my soul to the devil to be as good as I wanna be in the game, but it has quite the learning curve and I feel like a lot of people are gonna get frustrated and just not "get it."

To the people thinking the demo wasn't anything special. You really have to play it multiple times in order to get a grasp on how the mechanics work. It's not like Bayonetta in the sense that things flow more fluidly into the next. It's more about charging up your devil breakers for massive attacks, taunting at the right times, and getting constant exceed gauges with successful LT presses. After a few playthroughs of the demo and experimentation you'll see why fans call this the deepest action game. It lets you create your own style more so than a Bayonetta game IMO.

I don't really see the point of engaging with you if you're going to reduce my post to a brainless strawman. If you can't see why the absence of DMC-style JCing restricts combat in a negative way, and you're just going to gloss over my explanation of the way Bayonetta handicaps players, then, uhh... there's not much more to be said, lol.

I'll just say from where I'm sitting I'm not reducing anything. You yourself say here you do the same things in these games, you just do it... more in one. I'm not even a huge fan of Bayonetta, it already is so focused on flashy moves that it plays down environment and enemy interactions to a degree that it sacrifices a ton of depth that more interplay heavy games have.

For the person thinking I would complain about not being able to move and shot in RE4. NOPE, that adds far more depth then a million cancels ever could, and result in a stronger deeper game then either of these series.

I need the final game to be quite a bit more challenging than the demo. If I get that, DMC5 might be the best action game I've played that isn't Ninja Gaiden Black. Of course Seriko is coming out soon too...

Have any links to videos of people doing good in the demo? I'll be honest I played the demo and it left me scratching my head feeling very underwhelmed. It kind of took the game off my radar completely.

They fucked in DMC5 by making split be back+attack rather than forward+attack. That was my biggest disappointment with the demo and what left a lasting impression. Initially playing it, I thought the demo was ok but wouldn't reach the combat depth or quality of DMC3/4 but playing the demo more, I was relieved to see that it was only my skills that were unpolished and when I improved the game became a lot better.

Wish they made a DMC0 where you played solely as Spares and it was more mature and returned to the gothic horror of the first game. They could still incorporate all the mechanics of the new games as well while still revolutionizing the game's design. Oh well, maybe next time.

DMC will be pretty good, but Nioh 2, and Bayo 3 are still in the running to take the crown

Personally, my money is on Nioh 2. For me, Nioh 1 is the best action game of the gen as of right now. Bayo 2 knocked a lot of points away from Bayo's chances.

What aspect will be better in your opinion because gameplay-wise I dont see it being better. Lore-wise I do see it being more profound and interesting than DMC5 even tho I will definitely enjoy the story more in DMC5 due to the characters being so great and memorable.

I see Sekiro gameplay wise being better. Better level design, encounter design and If the demo boss in DMC 5 is anything to go by... then better bosses too like always.

Looking at some of the new preview footage, Nero has a new move similiar to split which might've taken that forward+attack combination.

Its about the type of game you prefer dmc 5 can have a good campaign with simple level design, its just how much you like the characters and combat system that differentiates it from the likes of Sekiro/Souls
DMC V is gonna have some amazing bosses and encounters though, you can bet on it

GoW will be the better all around game no doubt. Honestly the combat wasn't really flowing for me in the demo, it felt slow and not very satisfying, its not what I remember DMC playing like as a teen/early twenties. It was always my favourite out of the pure action games but I had a hard time really getting into the demo, maybe its Nero who kinda sucks. Dante was always the funner character to play. Character action games in general always feel like half a game where they focus exclusively on combat and the rest is an afterthought.

A PS2 game that has better combat and variety than Bloodborne then.
Combat comes down to taste, so I can understand that argument, but variety?

BB has more weapons, enemy types and environments than DMCV by a mile. From a pure gameplay perspective, the number of unique playstyles and builds in BB might be less than the Souls games that preceded it, but it still dwarfs what DMC offers.

I'd actually argue that's DMC's greatest weakness as a franchise: There's really only one way to play it optimally. Top-level play for a specific character is almost always going to look the same, while BB lets you carve out your own playstyle and take it as far as you can.

Both games expect you to git gud, but only one let's you get there creatively.

Although Bayonetta 2 was still a great game, I'll have to agree with this. For every step B2 took forward there was also one step back. I'm crossing my fingers that B3 will do something crazy, then it could sell me on a Switch, but a Bayo 2.5 won't cut it tbh.
Same with Nioh - if it follows the publisher's tradition of releasing slightly upgraded sequels, I won't be satisfied. My main wish for Nioh 2 would be - move farther away from the Souls series in terms of combat design and take even more ideas from NG.

Breadth is not the same as depth.

You can add a million recolors of training dummies, but that doesn't give it more depth than a game with one great enemy. Likewise, you can have a game with a million weapons, but if they mostly offer move sets that cater to the same scenarios, then the quantity didn't really offer much aside from flavor.

Builds shouldn't even be factored when it comes to action gameplay discussions. It's an RPG element. No idea why BB is even dragged into discussion because it's a different genre altogether.

Souls games don't really have a lot of depth to them. Don't get me wrong, they're good games that deserve praise, but from pure combat perspective, none of them hold a candle to DMC games.

Played the demo and honestly I couldn't get into it. It feels slow and clunky especially since Bayonetta was my gateway drug into this genre, and playing DmcV demo made me just miss everything about the witch..

Still gonna check the game out but as a casual I was underwelmed by the demo..

Came here to post something similar. Game feels slow and like you I got into this genre on Bayonetta so this felt strange. I feel like my character is lacking mobility.

I feel like I'm the only one that wants a new Ninja Gaiden.

Anyway, picked up the PC version of DMC5. Curious if they're going to do an SE version a year later. Who am I kidding , I'll still buy it.

I would not mind a new Ninja gaiden...but i dont even want to hear a peep about it from Team Ninja until they release a Ninja gaiden trilogy pack for PS4 and PC. I have an Xbox 360 so i can play my OG Ninja Gaiden and Ninja Gaiden 2...but i want more than anything a revised Ninja gaiden 1, 2 and Razor's edge in one package at 4K, solid 60fps and all the bells and trappings a true remaster can afford

I feel that at its best that it's the opposite of what you say. One reason I see DMC3 as the best one is cause of how it facilitates specialisation in a chosen style & weapon combo.

DMC4 might not have that so much cause it doesn't let you choose your favourite weapons but at least 5 is bringing it back a bit with Dante having a loadout again.

Rich Stanton writes a great writeup here on why DMC3 is still brilliant (circa 2013 anyway)
https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-01-27-devil-may-cry-3-retrospective

DMC3 is an endless game, and this is why. Dante is always equipped with two of five melee weapons, plus two of five sidearms, and all of these are bound up with a chosen style. Trickster's for acrobatic dodging, Swordmaster gives extra melee moves, and there are weirder styles like Quicksilver, which lets you instantly freeze time. There are so many possible combinations, and then each one has its own branching tree of attacks - and once cancelling is introduced, these branches split even more. It's a dizzying mental diagram, and gives Dante a range of expression so beyond the capabilities of most game characters it's untrue.
