Developer Capcom charges into the next-gen arena with the superb Special Edition of Devil May Cry 5. You name it, this game's got it - ray tracing support, a 120Hz mode, rapid loading times, and even an inventive use of PS5's adaptive triggers. We look at how the game takes to Sony's new machine, where there are some issues in this early stage that go along with a swathe of great upgrades over last-gen.

edit:

4K w/RT: Reconstruction
4K w/o RT: Native
1080p w/RT: Native

- 1080p w/RT uses a lower internal resolution for RT.
- RT modes add voxel fog.
- Native 4K mode doesn't hold 60fps (around the 45-60 range), RT quality mode has worse performance (drops into the 30s).
- RT Performance mode holds 60fps most of the time (dips into the upper 50s in gameplay and 40s in cutscenes).
- 120fps: Cutscenes in the 70-80fps range, gameplay around 100-120fps but can drop significantly (lowest shown was 68fps).
- If the game detects your display supports 120Hz, it will ONLY output in the resolutions that the 120Hz mode supports. For example, if you have a 4K TV that does 120Hz in 1080p, you'll never be able to run the game at 4K, only 1080p.
- If you have a 120Hz display, the game will run all modes uncapped up to 120Hz. There are no locked, stable frame rate options.

edit: oof that 120hz mode is terrible... rarely hits 120 and jumps from 80 to 110 constantly

down to the 30s in rt graphics mode, high frame rate mode 60s to 110s. this game would definitely benefit from vrr

No VRR is really a misstep, especially for games like this which target 120fps but are rarely able to maintain it.

They should've locked cutscenes to 30fps, they are still unstable just like the OG release.

Not surprised at RT continuing to hammer performance below 60fps.

There is no locked 60 mode? Damn that's a weird choice coming from Capcom. You can't accept framerate drops for skilled action games

Won't matter too much if you have VRR.

I mean it will affect RG and exceed timing a bit yeah, but its not the end of the world.

High FPS will be absolutely vital to preserving clean image smoothness on turbo mode. When I look at 60hz captures I make of turbo it looks really bad..

edit there's no VRR? What, why?

I know this isn't at all the point of the video, but watching them play is painful.

There's more than one combo string!

VRR makes that range perfectly acceptable. That's why Sony really needs to get it out ASAP.

Capcom fucked up.

Base mode should be reconstructed 4k with a locked 60fps cap.

Hopefully the load times on the BC version are good cause I ain't buying at launch

Wow this is a terrible port - no framerate lock if you use a HDMI 2.0 display that supports 120hz? No way to use the 4K modes?

What absolute garbage.

This right here is a case study as to why VRR is important and I really hope the PS5 gets it patched in soon.

it goes beyond VRR, this is just a terrible implementation across the board.

They should give a locked 60fps with VRR or not. Most people don't have 120hz TVs.

At what point in high frame rates do large fluctuations stop becoming noticeable? Or will it always produce some sort of judder?

So the 120hz mode sucks because PS5 has no VRR and there's no option to get a locked 60 with RT off and reconstruction? That's not great...

I'd have hoped to maybe see some kind of dynamic resolution to keep the framerate up when the particles are going crazy, but maybe that's not possible in the RE engine.

Seems abit disappointing all over. The raytracing looks way to blurry for me. 120fps mode drops to 60.
I like DMCV but not gonna drop more money on it.

Yeah, it wouldn't help anyone that doesn't have a 2.1 TV.

I bought a CX specifically for next-gen and I'm a little disappointed that the PS5 won't support VRR day one.

Yeah, I had been considering swapping for a HDMI 2.1 tv but now I'll wait a big longer and get more use out of this one. Poor that it's not in for launch.
