Just watched the video itself...

...DF is clearly going to need some "re-education" seeing as they blamed the engine for some of the game's issues.

Nah but seriously a game locking to 20fps for minutes at a time should not be acceptable in today's climate. Just Cause 3, the other title with similar levels of performance, at least had mass levels of destruction to 'justify' its low FPS, FO76's soar spots come from static environments with maybe 2 or 3 enemy AI on screen. Whether that's the engine, a random line of code or the game's "ambition" I don't know, but it should not have released in this state.

What an embarrassment this game is.

Give the Fallout license to a competent developer already.

Glad the performance in BGS games is being put front and center with this. Bethesda has made quite a few mistakes with FO4 and 76 that need to be addressed in Starfield and TES VI. It doesn't matter if it's the engine or not they need to make sure they implement the necessary changes to improve performance and graphics tech. If we're waiting 10 years for TES VI it can't be riddled with such trash, it would be completely unacceptable.

Nah man the bit about the lighting implementation of the engine being at fault for bad indoor lighting is 100% spot on. Missing the point of the Kotaku article.

I know that. The game locks to 20fps and locks it there for minutes because of the vsync.
Not sure, I've had that happen on PC with another game but I'm pretty sure non variable vsync would lock it to 15 then, no?

Edit: Quick google says depending on the exact settings a lock at 20fps can happen because of vsync, so you're probably right

It's not static though, every bottle, weapon and many small items are 3D models with physics applied to them. Like in Skyrim when you do a shout in a store and several dozen or hundred objects start flying around. It's an immersion factor but one of the reasons why performance can fluctuate wildly. That and it's an open world with plenty of AI. In a really static world like in ESO with no physics applied to it, performance is better and more predictable. Not to excuse the performance but it's also not without a reason.

Bethesda needs to hire a shit ton more people who actually know their shit. They need to stop making games as if they just came out of college and are working out of their garage. Actually scratch that someone straight out of college would probably put a bit more soul into their games.
Well and they need a new engine.

Performance:
- One observation: Base PS4 has consistent 20 FPS with instances of 15 FPS for a long stretch
- Same location tested on Pro/Base XBO stuck to 30 FPS in same location.
- Xbox X on same location went down to 15 to 10 FPS.
- Another observed location has PS4 Pro drop to 20 FPS while OG PS4 remains at 30.

It is static in the sense that, at that moment, none of those objects were moving or being interacted with. I can understand frame drops if you spawn 1,000 cheese wheels in Skyrim but simply walking up a hill and looking at the outside of a building/some trees should not be dropping the game to those kinds of frame rates. If hose objects are causing those framerate drops despite not being active at that time then optimise the game and remove them, don't just keep them there.

As for the AI, that shouldn't really be an excuse, especially when you consider how 'dumb' enemy AI (which, bar some mindless robots, is all FO76 has) in Bethesda games usually is. Grand Theft Auto Online can have a world with more players and much greater numbers of AI without dropping to 25fps when a mere 3 of them are engaged with you in combat.

This is what happens when the creators/publisher just don't give a fuck and shovels their half-working garbage out the door because they know a certain type of gamer will buy it regardless of quality, these gamers will even pre-order well knowing that the quality is abysmal - previews show this clearly. At this point I don't actually blame the creator/publisher as people deserve what they get as they had every chance to wait.

This is a poorly made game and really telling how behind BGS is as a AAA developer. I shant be buying it. It's unfortunate because the idea of a multiplayer Fallout has grown on me, but this is just sad.

Impressive technical achievement.

Like seriously, how can Bethesda look at this and say: Yup, ship it.

Again GTA and Fallout/TES are very different games. Even in GTA V they famously reduced and cut so many physics interactions that many "GTA IV was more advanced" videos recently popped up, despite not acknowledging how much more worse GTA IV performed on the same consoles in comparison.

Now about Bethesda: I remember reading an interview somewhere, that those "useless" but interactive items scattered all over the gameworld are important to them due to immersion, while admitting that it does affect performance. They chose not to have a static world because it has an impact on how "real" everything feels in an RPG.
The location DF showed for instance has a shop nearby with plenty of items and a super mutant base next to it as well, so rendering hundreds of objects will be taxing regardless of them moving or not. That is not to say they can't find ways to improve performance and optimize, since the performance of Bethesda games is terrible at best.

Hey look, another technical disaster from Bethesda.

You know what, though? Maybe it's not the engine. Maybe it's not the decade+ of putting lipstick on a turd. Maybe - just maybe - Bethesda is totally incompetent.

This game is a mess. Poor performance for no reason, broken ai, broken textures.... Gotta love at the end that even DF is calling the engine trash lmao!
A little hyperbolic with that statement. I'm not defending Bethesda in any way but DF simply said the engine wasn't in the right place to fulfill their big dreams. A far bit different from calling it trash imo.

12 fps on the Xbox one X? LMAO!!
So much for "The world's most powerful console"...

The Playstation 5 can't come soon enough to save gaming. The current boxes we have a really starting to show their age.

Why the hell they did not switch to the idTech yet?

IIRC they explained this before, id Engine was not for open world games.

My guess is that they bought id for to replace their Gamebryo engine, then it turned out to be a wrong purchase without a refund.

But hey, at least that gave them Doom and Quake franchises and they did leverage from them nicely in recent years.

It's not open for interpretation that the Xbox One X is the strongest console on the market. It just is.

The consoles are not the problem, it's the game.

Seriously what is causing framerates like this in 2018? Because again, Fallout 4 wasn't anywhere near as bad. Yeah I remember that dip to 1 fps or so when you were about to enter that one city, forgot the name but everything else was decent enough. Come on BGS.

It's not like this game is that much more graphically demanding.

This really doesn't stand up to scrutiny when you look at something like RDR2. I know it's a vastly different budget but the consoles, base to upgrades, are capable of stunning looking games running acceptably. This is on Bethesda.

This is amazing, never would I have thought I would live to see the day a "locked 20fps" as being somewhat.

Bethesda is constantly breaking new ground.
