Did Game Freak lie about dex cuts? And why?

Wouldn't it have been much better from a marketing standpoint to come out and say DLC expansion packs are coming with a good chunk of the dex cut back? (And that you don't even need the DLC to trade / Home the returning Pokemon in).

Maybe they didn't want to admit their game was unfinished, but was the backlash really worth it?

It still results in cut Pokémon and would result in 'lmao, they're actually selling the national dex as DLC lololol' 'unfinished garbage' and whatnot. Backlash would increase, not decrease at all.

or maybe they didn't plan on DLC until they saw the success of the game?

It's possible, even if unlikely, that adding more Pokemon is a decision that came after the backlash. Also, they might not have wanted to spoil the surprise of DLC.

Maybe they didn't decide to bring back 200 Pokemon until after Sword/Shield already released.

They were clearly working on the DLC before Sword/Shield shipped (Ohmori said in the Direct they've been working on the expansions for some time), but adding in 200 returning Pokemon may have been a more recent decision.

Instead of accusing them of lying from the jump, maybe give them the benefit of the doubt.

They lied because they couldn't say "We're rushing the projet so the production commitie doesn't nuke us. There will be more Pokeymans on DLC the next year"

They probably didnt have much time to put all Pokemons in the game.
They release 1 Pokemon game each year, and they dont have a huge team like Activision does with Call of Duty.

They didnt want to say "look, we are releasing an unfinished game right now and patching it later" due to obvious reasons. It would affect sales and scores.

With that said, I think that it was a terrible decision to lie about it, and they should suffer all the heat because of it.

Maybe they wanted to surprise us. I was pleasantly surprised by today's announcement.

1) They did not lie about which pokemon would be in the game at launch
2) It is clear from the inclusion of more pokemon in the dlc that the primary constraint was time
3) This game undoubtedly had an immovable release date so they took the hit not having them all at the start, knowing they'd eventually be added for no additional cost. Tying more pokemon to dlc that is announced pre-launch, even if you don't need the dlc to get them, may have been just as bad optics as saying nothing.

Don't the gamers generally get really upset when DLC is announced before a game comes out lol this was 100% the right way to go about things

I wonder how many people will rely on a friend to trade them new regional forms / pokes, as opposed to getting the DLC.

I just feel like admitting more Pokes will come would have been a better move, but I guess Nintendo will never be progressive like that.

I don't think they anticipated the level of backlash they received until it was too late. I doubt they wanted to disrupt their marketing plans for the expansion pass either.

Plus, during the press tour for SwSh, the expansion pass was likely still in early planning.

They easily could have said updates will come over time to add additional Pokemon into the game, but even that wouldn't have completely sidestepped the controversy. They haven't made any commitment to completing the National Dex, so the issue still stands.

I like to believe they were planning another sequel for full price and not all Pokemon, but the huge backslash made then reconsider.

Complaining non-stop works.

Doing it this way makes it look like they "listened to fan feedback", making the DLC more attractive without having to actually change anything.

They also wanted to calibrate expectations here so that people don't go into the next Pokemon game expecting THE ENTIRE DEX to be there even after updating this one to accommodate more Pokemon via DLC.

As someone who is happy with today's announcements and has bought the DLC:

They could have no announced the DLC without lying about the reasons for the cuts like

Animations (insert all videos on the subject here)
Models (when they would obviously be mined at release and confirmed to be the same for many pokemon)
Balance (now that we know all legendaries will be back)

They should have said nothing or been upfront about SwSh being an evolving game platform with post release support from the announcement, before the cuts were revealed.

You are just making assumptions, people always make those kind of assumptions and believe them (like the idea that Switch was "rushed" to the market).

They probably planned the content they were going to provide taking their capacity into consideration + business model from the start.

They lied, this is literally a fact, why are people so adamant on denying it? lol They did it because it was a smart business decision (what wasn't a smart decision was rushing the game in the first place), and it is not a shocking and ground-breaking fact.

Would a major company scrap millions of sales worth of a new game to appease a small but loud bunch of nerds of the internet? Of course not. But unreasonable people will convince themselves that it would to try and validate their online harassment campaign.

It’s almost like things like this aren’t worth freaking out about because most games receive extensive post-launch updates these days and grow/change over time.

Did Game Freak lie?

Let's analyze the definition of lie

lie

intransitive verb
1 : to make an untrue statement with intent to deceive
2 : to create a false or misleading impression
Now let's find the exact quote they gave

"We now have no plans to make the Pokémon that are missing in the Galar Pokédex in-game available, that is an approach that we want to continue in the future with Pokémon games.
So there are currently two possible options

1. Game Freak changed plans after the day of the interview (November 10th)
2. They lied

Lmfao. “Unfinished game”.

The only heat they’re taking is on forums and doesn’t affect them at all. They’ll continue to have great success with the new generation, and well deserved. People will continue to rage and convince themselves it matters, but it really doesn’t. Era isn’t nearly as important as some people like to convince themselves.

Better than believe they are liars, in my opinion.

I;ll say what I've said before, the marketing for these game was just odd, especially with how that was handled, on the one hand, I want to believe this them walking back after the criticism they got (though it annoys me seeing some journalists trying to act smug about it now after fuelling the fan rage or creating excuses etc). However, looking at the DLC, either they've crunched like Arceus to get that done fast as possible or they had this in the works for a while, which if that was the case, their was no need to lie because the surprise that Pokemon were coming back in slowly (which didn't need to spoil the expansions) was not worth what we had to go through for months, I had to leave the fandom for ages because the sheer warring and negativity was too much.

So I think this was an attempt to keep a surprise under wraps till a certain date and they didn't realize the backlash they got but were too stuborn to say anything that could ruin it. We've seen it before (like when Journalists leak news then the studio denies it).

It’s almost like things like this aren’t worth freaking out about because most games receive extensive post-launch updates these days and grow/change over time.
Were you not paying attention at all? Part of the reason the backlash and criticism was because they flat out said something like DLC expansions and Patches WEREN'T going to happen.

I wish they had told us how many Pokémon would be in the base game and that they intended from the start to add more. It’s understandable that “everyone is here” is difficult for their release schedule when they have so many unique models.

I wish in the future that GameFreak takes more time with the next entry and that Nintendo publishes more big holiday hits each year so that Pokémon doesn’t have to be forced out the gate.
