Testing data from AMD recently leaked giving us some hint of the technical make-up of the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X. So what has been revealed, how accurate is the leak likely to be and how could the new Sony and Microsoft console possibly compare? The leak looks genuine, but take any analysis with just a pinch of salt. Regardless - here's what we think.

PS5 and Xbox Series X GPU specs leak: how powerful is next-gen?

A remarkable story unfolded last April where it seemed that an intrepid explorer of the 3DMark benchmark database stumb…

There was a leak? Seems like it's shoddy at best

EDIT: Kneejerk reaction sorry. DF makes it CLEARLY known it's unconfirmed and lacking context. Sorry

Just a warning based on reading the article, the memory bandwidth for the PS5 is outdated, the latest oberon test in the leak had 530GB/s with 550GB/s theoritical

Oh boy. That'll be a fun thread (and in line with what some people were saying over the past few months).

Even if the PS5 is 9 tflops and the Series X is 12, you're still not going to see the kind of differences you saw at the beginning of the XB1 and PS4 gen. People with fantasies of that kind of stuff should probably reign in your thinking on that front.

Isn't the gap larger here?

Woah if PS5 is 3TF slower that Xbox SX. I wonder if the form factor and higher power draw caught Sony by surprise. Unless PS5 is way cheaper this would be a big issue for Sony

Edit: Ppl already in defensive mode, if this is true the forum will be a mess for months if not years. Lol

DF are entitled to provide content if people are looking for it. Look at the thread here and how popular it is.

They also make it very clear what it is.

DF is late. We already know from Matt that the leaked 9.2 isn't based on final ps5.
They're the victim of video production time.

The next-gen thread moves fast but I thought that Github data was old and we've already moved on from it?

Yes, this theoretical tflops gap is larger.

But there are multiple reasons why this won't be a repeat of last gen. For starters the XB1 not only had a significant tflops deficit, but it also had a memory bandwidth deficit, which is a big problem. There are no reasons to think the PS5 will have similar issues.

The other factor to keep in mind is that the higher we go in resolutions the less obvious these differences become. 1080p vs 720p is instantly noticeable to anyone who is the least bit informed. A 4k comparison to 1800p is not.

Lastly you have the factor of developers just not bothering to take advantage of extra power when it's available. This already happens quite often with the XB1X, and I think this could also be a symptom of being the lesser selling console. Developers are more often than not going to focus first on the platform with the highest install base, which will almost certainly be the PS5. Then you have the whole Series S situation, which means developers are likely going to be working on two builds for Xbox, which I suspect means they're going to be even less likely to put in extra effort to use up every bit of that Series X power if the PS5 is their lead platform.

The only one espousing fantasies is the person saying you won't see a noticeable difference between 9 and 12 flops.

Power isn't going to be everything if the price is too far out of reach. These console specs are starting to sound more and more unbelievable to fit into normal console price points.

I heard similar arguments before: when Xbox One was confirmed to be weaker to be exact. We know how that turned out.

Isn't possible that Xbox is just launching the next gen Xbox One X form the start and Sony will launch a "Ps5 Pro" later?

Funny. Someone brings up the 4TF Lockhart and people pounce saying the only difference between it and a 12TF Series X is going to be resolution. Now a 9TF machine is going to have noticeable differences?

Oh wow, haven't been keeping up with all the next gen news. Can't watch the video right now but I guess rumors point to the next gen Xbox GPU having close to 3 TFLOPs more processing power? Interesting, thought things were going to be neck and neck (at least starting out).

Everyday I have more sure DF knows almost nothing about next gen consoles and it is on speculation camp.

Even if this is true, the PS2CGXbox gen already proved that a more powerful GPU means nothing, the most successful console will be used as the base console for development.
