Sorry if it's been shared, but deep in the Halo delay discussion, I found this:

They look at the purpose of a Series S, the R&D costs to manufacture two seperate consoles, the increasing cost of consumer electronics such as smartphones and the reluctance from both Sony and Microsoft to discuss price...

$499-599 has been my expectation from the start. I can't believe there's people expecting them to come in at under $499.

EDIT: $499 seems the most likely to me at this point, but people seem woefully unprepared for the possibility of a $599 console again.

Sony and Microsoft are keenly aware that the $600 PS3 is still used as a punchline in 2020 and that going over $499 is a DOA price tag. It would be a disaster for either to go over $499.

If PS5 would be at $600, Sony's revenue forecast would be at least $1.2-1.5B higher and profits would be a lot higher too

Expect < $499 for Sony (for the more expensive model)

Yeah $600 has been my baseline for budgeting. Seems about right. Expensive as hell though.

I don't think they know any more than we do, at least when it comes to price. Sounds like an educated guess to me (one which I disagree with).

Cool. Can't wait to not buy either one for like two fucking years. Neither of these machines are worth $600.

$600 seems unlikely imo. $500 is where I'm pegging it. Either way. Convert that to Canadian and I will be waiting like 3 years haha. Fuck

when Sony asked for more PS5 units i knew price was going to be 399 and 499. no way we see 599. they expect to sell faster than ps4 considering their production.

"Woefully unprepared"? How does one prepare, other than trying to save money?

Could be but I still think 499 for the base consoles and 399-449 for the digital only ones is the most likely place they fall into but we shall see.

Bloomberg was reporting that developers expected PS5 to cost $500-550 in February. And Zhuge estimated that XSX had a similar BOM.

People just want to believe the $399 into existence. I don't think we should expect the XSX or even the PS5 digital edition to cost less than $499 at launch.

There's zero chance Sony looked at PS3 reception vs PS4 reception and said "yeah let's make a $599 PS5"

So over $700 Canadian, my wallet weeps.
499 would translate to 700 CAD... so 599 would likely translate to 800 CAD, before taxes, in Canada.

Ouch. Not even sure I'd get either console at that price, let alone both.

And for the record, I don't believe this will turn out to be the case. I can't see either of them going above 499.

That would be crazy. Yes, we all know the tech is expensive, but with them taking the retailer's cut on their growing online stores, they can afford to subsidize the hardware in the early days of the consoles, better than ever before.

$499 is reasonable and expected - for the premium model. If either of them announces at $599, they're handing the other company a huge opportunity on a silver platter.

I think it's probably the reason why both companies are playing chicken right now with announcing the price first.

Yeah I'm not paying 600 for better versions of current gen games + a Spider-Man expansion.

i'd be shocked if that's the case. i thought 500 was the absolute highest either of them are willing to go.

If they're both at $599 are they both DOA then?

The price of most consumer electronics has gone up significantly over the last decade since the days of the PS3. I don't think consoles coming at $599 would be that shocking.

I am sorry but I just don't see it. 599 for PS5 for example doesn't make sense based on sales estimates / initial production numbers we've seen. And it's not just Canada, elsewhere, pretty much anywhere outside of USA, this will be even more expensive given the dollar parity. Honestly I really don't believe it will be over 550 USD (499 for the discless version just so the mental "under 500 bucks" starting price looks reasonable).
