From Vulture:
He has officially passed at age 51.
"On Wednesday, April 17th, our beloved son/father, John Singleton, suffered a stroke while at the hospital. John is currently in the ICU and under great medical care. We ask that privacy be given to him and our family at this time and appreciate all of the prayers that have been pouring in from his fans, friends and colleagues."
In 1992, Singleton became the first African-American director, and youngest director ever, to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Director for Boyz n the Hood (which also earned him a Best Original Screenplay nomination). More recently, John Singleton created and has been working as executive producer on the critically acclaimed FX series Snowfall, which is set to premiere its third season later this year. Across social media, friends and admirers alike are reaching out to share well wishes and prayers for a quick recovery.
Just a final update:
This is an official statement from his family.
