I want to you to lay out how people are supposed to move past this kind of behavior and grow? Do you even want them to or do you want to bolt them to the past as if they are stuck in time, unable to change?
That's the worst thing about this forum, it has so many people with this mindset that if someone did something wrong in the past they can never get past it and grow. It's disgusting. Complete holier than thou attitude.

My mind is still reeling at how perfect this whole news has been. Marvel gets to reclaim Gunn for GotG 3 and most likely whatever plans they had for cosmic Marvel (especially now that they have the Fox properties back), DC gets to keep Gunn to fix Suicide Squad (which was only made to ape GotG in the first place), and Gunn gets to finish his trilogy and bankroll off both comic book movie universes. Literally the only people who lose are the alt-righters that only ever cared about having the scalp of a Trump critic, and now said critic is untouchable.

Nigga was fucking 40 when he made those tweets. Like what kind of dude makes those types of sick joke.

You are not the first person to bring up his age as proof that he's incapable of change, and I've always found it upsetting. I don't like the idea that once you hit ~30 you're assumed to be the adult you'll be for the rest of your life. Yes, by then most people do settle in their ways, but people should be allowed and encouraged to repent and mature, regardless of their physical age.

That's the worst thing about this forum, it has so many people with this mindset that if someone did something wrong in the past they can never get past it and grow. It's disgusting. Complete holier than thou attitude.

Probably not the right topic to grind this gear on. Most people in the original thread were fully supportive of Gunn and against the "outrage" mob started by Cernovich and Disney for falling for it. And it was because Gunn had shown years of growing from his past self and changing himself for the better.

If I recall, wasn't that for his list of comic girls he wants to fuck?
He apologized for a few different things. There was a very ill advised piece on his website for one... but as I recall these kinds of jokes came up after Disney first hired him, while he was working on GOTG1, and he apologized (not his first apology for past behavior). I can't say for certain that they're the exact specific jokes, but that's how I remember it going down.

I think you're lacking context on where Gunn came from. On a base level, it's indefensible to make jokes about child rape. However, this was back in the days when every celebrity was using Twitter to "genuinely" speak e.g. Kevin Hart's tweets on homosexuality, Ricky Gervais's jokes on trans people, Amy Schumer's jokes about gay people and so on. The second is that Gunn comes from the Troma school of filmmaking, which focuses on grossing out and shocking audiences with super edgy dark humor. Just read the plot synopsis of "Tromeo and Juliet" to get what I'm talking about.

In essence, these two things, celebs using Twitter to be unfiltered and Gunn's personal brand as an edgy shock jock, led to these jokes. It's fine if you can't forgive him for even making the jokes in the first place, but at least you now know the context.

You did not respond to a single part of the post you quoted. So I'll ask it again:

I want to you to lay out how people are supposed to move past this kind of behavior and grow? Do you even want them to or do you want to bolt them to the past as if they are stuck in time, unable to change?

Yeah it's not specifically to just but just a recurring theme in general here.

Are we having some sort of weird LTTP for some people that missed Gunn's initial firing more than half a year ago?? Because I'd love to see the whole back and forth that led nowhere take place all over again.

Someone who came up in the world witnessing abuse themself, and attempted to process it through humor. Not successfully, but has since grown as a person, admitted their wrongdoing, and has spent basically every moment of their career since making amends for it and telling stories about love and redemption that show their true personhood.

Someone who, like a lot of us, is flawed but always trying to do better. People like Gunn don't deserve to have their career and freedom of creativity blown to shit because actual abusers and awful people decided to smear him because he spoke out against their racist & rapist God Emperor Trump.

There is no evidence to suggest James Gunn is a child rapist. What there is evidence for is James Gunn making crass, gross jokes that leverage paedophilia for shock value. He is not alone in this behaviour nor exclusive, and we know this humour is generally leveraged by people attempting shock and appal their audience. It's a subset of humour. I've done it in the past. Many others have as well, utilising jokes where the punchline cites murder, rape, paedophilia, racism, or some other extremely controversial, counter-culture, politically incorrect trope or topic. I know a baby/fridge joke that I'd tell in my teens that I'm sure this version of Gunn would have found hilarious.

Gunn has since gone on record to discuss this brand of humour (again, let's identify that this style of humour is not exclusive to Gunn, did not originate with Gunn, is not propagated exclusively by Gunn), and how he has grown as a person since. Gunn's brand of humour dating back about a 8 - 10 years and his career trajectory revolved around deliberately gross, controversial jokes and punchlines aimed at unsettling people and stirring the pot. He openly discussed how he sees futility in this style of humour in his later years, the pointlessness of it all, and the obliviousness towards those who may be negatively impacted by it.

Not only recognising his actions and public image, he made several clear, conscious efforts to rectify his behaviour over the years. He has demonstrated himsefl as a person not only acknowledging and admitting of guilt to the humour he subjected people too and the potential ramifications of it, but growth as an individual to the betterment of his own audience.

The website you linked to is run by Mike Cernovich, a hard right nationalist and prominent supporter of Donald Trump and the Republican parties values (multiplied to extremetities). He actively opposes all forms of liberalism, feminism, and racial equality. He believes date rape does not exist (and is a rapist himself), and that there is an ongoing white race genocide that must be combated. He is a vocal mouthpiece for alt-right white nationalist values and ideologies.

Gunn has, for a very long time now, been an open advocate for the exact opposite values. He is pro equality, heavily liberal, and openly anti-Trump. It is not surprise that Cernovich penned a hit piece on Gunn, the latter representing the exact political opposition of ideologies he embodies.

Whether or not you or I or anybody else finds Gunn's decade old jokes funny or shocking is irrelevant to the claim that Gunn is a paedophile, of which Cernovich so brazingly parrots. Emotional outrage is not evidence. Ideologically fuelled hit pieces are not evidence. A fridge/baby joke cited years ago does not make me a paedophile. Doesn't make Gunn one either.

Here's the best post in the thread, everyone.

The simple truth is that what is acceptable in the world has changed at an incredibly fast pace over the 2010s. And that's a very good thing.

I think back to when I would try desperately to be edgy in MySpace blogs in the mid-2000s and it makes me cringe now. The "on this day" feature on Facebook recently showed me something I posted in 2008 and I was horrified and embarrassed at how offensive it was. It honestly felt like I was reading something another person had written. I couldn't even imagine thinking it now, let alone typing it.

Yes, I'm talking about things I posted online in my early to mid 20s and Gunn was certainly older but I don't think that changes much. As long as we clearly change as humans, that is what should matter. And that's exactly what happened with Gunn: we literally watched him change over time.

Kevin Hart is an example of the opposite. He doubled down multiple times on his homophobic comments and refused to apologize multiple times, while trying to make himself out to be the victim.

Not only did Gunn already publicly acknowledge and regret his offensive humor in interviews long before the alt-right dug his tweets up, we witnessed him use his platform to speak up against white supremacy and racism.

It was incredibly stupid and irresponsible to have axed him to begin with, moreover, to bow down to disingenuous alt-right trolls. Gunn is a great example of someone who has said some shitty things in the past but has grown up, and that growth is apparent in not only his being but his work.

Good for him. Everyone wins, except the mouth breathers who got Gunn fired. This is the same crowd that undoubtedly review-bombed Captain Marvel and posted hundreds of misogynistic tin foil hat bullshit on Youtube. Take another L, fucks.

Disney eating their own dick in this one.

honestly if it's how the article paints it, I can't be mad. "Disney" as a company may be temporarily embarrassed by how this looks. But it sounds like the people involved, particularly Alan Horn and James Gunn, are both just human beings who understand they made mistakes and have taken steps to fix them.

Like, the idea that this was resolved by these two guys just sitting down, being honest and talking about it? Can't fault anyone for that.

The worst part about Gunn's tweets is how bad and boring the jokes are. It's just saying crass, dumb shit for the sake of being crass.

That's not simply something he was in, it's his creation. It's a series called "PG Porn" that's devoted solely to porn storylines and each episode features actual pornstars. It's actually really funny.

Yep. Better story, themes, music, and standout moments. Great series. Great sequel.

Guardians 2 was so good it made me retroactively like Guardians 1. Guardians 2 is probably my favourite marvel movie, it has themes and emotional moments, its not just a cgi fight fest(although it does have them and they are good), it wasn't just about defeating the bad guy, it was about so much more.

I'm glad Gunn is back and that a monolith like Disney can change it's mind.

Guardians 2 felt a lot more exhausting compared to the first but it still had its moments. Glad he came back to this to close off his trilogy tho

Kinda hilarious how much this whole situation was a win for him. Disneys dumb ass put him on timeout and now he got 2 big pay day movies out of it

Also his tweets were trash but only warranting an apology really

Man fuck James Gunn, I don't care if he makes movies people love, I don't get how "It was just jokes bro!" has become an acceptable defence for this guy. This guy made an article where he fantasized about fucking a 15 year old X-23, didn't he also make comments about Stark "fucking Batwoman straight"? I don't get the love, he seems vile and disgusting, maybe I'm just missing something.

Yeah, that people can change and grow. He doesn't defend any of that stuff.

To perhaps come off less confrontational (because there's gonna be a lot of those kind of guys "just asking questions" and it's a bit of a sore point): what you're missing is years of Gunn renouncing those comments and that behavior and showing a demonstrable path of change, repentance, and maturity. And this was a path he took on long before Disney hired him in the first place.

It's wild ain't it? A lot of people are willing to forgive this hack for pedo jokes though so i guess that's that.
