https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/11/poli...-border-wall-negotiations-shutdown/index.html

(CNN) — America could be sliding toward a new government shutdown and President Donald Trump may face a fateful choice over his border wall as another knife-edge week opens in Washington.
Democratic and Republican negotiators last week seemed to be on course for a deal to fund the government and boost border security short of paying for a wall, and it seemed possible that Trump might grudgingly sign on.
But the talks ground to a halt over the weekend in a dispute over limits demanded by Democrats on the number of places available in detention centers used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations away from border areas.
The disagreement appeared to dash hopes that a deal could be reached by Monday to allow each chamber of Congress plenty of time to pass legislation well before a Friday deadline.

Hope you all enjoyed this past three week stint of functioning government!

that's gonna be a dangerous hill for republicans to die on. the concentration camps are already unpopular so any attempt to stall their decrease would be met with heated resistance

Imagine if this ends up being a loop.

1. Government shuts down.
2. Dems and Repubs duke it out admist the chaos
3. Airlines start going nuts again
4. Trump signs another bill to fund the government for three weeks
5. Repeat from step 1.

It would be a miracle if a shutdown were avoided.

When all the pundits said that the GoP lost the last round and wouldn't do it again, especially because the senate seemingly got the votes without much approval from Trump, they were deluding themselves. The shutdown didn't end through Trump's leadership. The shutdown ended because Trump got bored and the senate saw a window to go ahead without angering him.

The fact is, unless Trump goes out and says, "Mitch, pass a clean bill," we're getting a shutdown. Trump won't say anything too substantial one way or the other because he simply doesn't care, but he will shout something on the eve, like "WALLS and WHEELS, Schumer SHUTDOWN SAD!" and all the GoP members will flinch and throw the shutdown switch again.

I have no idea why the GoP are so afraid of Trump, he has no power or influence. Base? Mike Pence could have gotten that result in 2018.

The 30% of the population that still fucking loves Trump makes up most of the Republican primary base. For Republican primary voters, the diet authoritarianism is the main feature of the administration. Anyone who resists the will of racist reality-tv messiah is facing a brutal primary challenge. They'd rather watch the disintegration of the country from a seat in congress than have opinions and get booted for them.

The shutdown ended because it was about to impact tax returns and the airlines were threatening to close down. Republicans can move really quickly if it means saving themselves.

As fucked up as it is, I want LaGuardia to be quicker about threatening to pull that trigger. The GOP needs to see that nothing's changed these last few weeks, and that the same consequences that scared them then are still around to scare them now.

I hope that the Democrats have a better story to tell then this "But the talks ground to a halt over the weekend in a dispute over limits demanded by Democrats on the number of places available in detention centers used by Immigration and Customs Enforcement operations away from border areas. "
Because if Trump (and that is a big if) is ok with say 2 Billion and no new fences then the Democrats will get the blame on the next shutdown. Of course there will be no shutdown but a declared emergency. But democrats hold all the carts here.
I just hope they don't overplay it.

There's just no way.

Everyone knows how the last one played out. No one involved would want to do that again, especially the GOP.

A second shutdown again caused by Trump would be an absolute disaster for them and another win for dems.

So please, by all means..

Forget one giant shutdown. Being throttled like that is gonna piss people off even more. Hopefully that means death by tiny cuts for Trump and the GOP since they're the ones playing this game. Democrats need to keep the message that the shutdowns are a tantrum by Trump for something no one wants.

I'd like to think that even Trump wouldn't be stupid enough to try for a shutdown AGAIN but it's Trump.
