I was under the impression from the last one of these threads that individuals arent exactly targeted, but hackers get whatever and who ever they can and share what they find in shady hacker communities. No idea though.

Cracks me up when I see people doing it. Especially family members that do it "cause of the FBI". I have a cousin that did it, and he couldn't give me an answer on why outside of that.

However, I've done work on a lot of women's PCs/laptops and noticed a lot of them do.

Made me think about how they probably wouldn't want someone trying to see them or get pictures of them. A lot of pervs out there, so I don't blame them. I couldn't care less if they (pervs, random people, the FBI, etc) see me. I'd just wave at them.

(there's literally nothing interesting that they'd see me doing)

Also, I rarely use my laptop. I mean, my phone's camera is uncovered 24/7 anyway.

I just bought a laptop and it has a slideable cover for it, pretty neat.

It's a completely irrational fear borne out of a paranoia that is impossible to really 100% avoid in this day and age.

But yes, I cover mine.

It's a small piece of masking tape, why is that funny or notable?

I thought most webcams nowadays had their LEDs linked to their camera power by hardware, so you can always tell when it's turned on

Wow, the results are pretty much dead even. I have no idea how I made it through 26 years of life and this is the first time i've noticed it.

Yes both for privacy cus Zoom meetings have defaulted to my camera on and it was annoying, also for security. My company is a direct target for hacking attempts weekly, not taking chances.

There are people who watch randos through webcams just because they can. There are even websites dedicated just to providing steams of this. People can, and do, spy on nobodies through their webcams for voyueristic fun.

I don't cover my webcam because I have an awesome Huawei Matebook X Pro which has this neat feature :

(the camera is inside the keyboard, just push it to get it in and out).

No, because there's nothing to see anyway. Microphones are a far greater concern and I have two Echo Dots so clearly I'm not worried about that either.

Erm yes! Even though it's a slim chance I could be spied on as webcams are hardware locked, it's not a risk I'm willing to take. I don't want someone taling a vid of me beating my meat lol

Mine has an LED indicator light that is hardwired to the camera module itself, it turns on if any electricity is flowing to the camera.

That said, I do still tape it over but only because I'm paranoid about the camera coming on during a conference call.
lol.

I can snapshot a webcam faster than your eyes can recognize that green light.

Because we have a TON of cameras and microphones around us that we don't turn off or cover up.

Covering up your laptop camera is usually just putting a band-aid on a gushing artery in your life (as far as recording devices around you).

We literally carry listening devices around, with multiple cameras, everywhere we go.

Nothing wrong with it, I just chuckle when some people do it....because I know them and there's nothing for them to hide or anything anyone would care about...like the cousin I mentioned.

Considering my IT can remote in and take over control of my computer at any time, yes, fuck that. You don't get to see me working from home in my undies...which I don't do but if I did you don't get to see it!

Rarely is my phone in a position where it's looking at me in a private sort of situation. It's either in my pocket or staring at my face or the ceiling. Laptop cameras get propped up where they can stare away at anything going on in the room. Microphones pretty much are unavoidable, but I disable my work laptop's mic if I'm not in a Skype meeting

It's understandable. Even if you have no reason to care, your privacy is a right.

If you don't mind pictures of your dork making the rounds, well there you go.

I would probably feel more comfortable not covering my cam if I was on Linux or Mac. I've read a few too many stories about people getting malware on their pc that then somehow turns off the little cam light indicator and starts filming you.

At my school's CS department I've noticed all of the members of the security research team use the covers. If the experts are doing it it's probably not total phooey.

That's pretty awesome, but I'm betting it gives some less than flattering angles.
You'll have to upkeep your nostril hair for sure ha ha.

Webcams are useless to me, I don't use them on laptops and most of them have shit quality and they take up screen estate (maybe if there was some solution like the newest Galaxy A or Oppo or Asus Zenphones where the camera is hidden and then get out). I'd rather use a separate webcam.

But hey different uses for different people.

No. Of all the data I keep on my computer, access to the webcam is so far down the list of importance to me on what someone could actually gain access to, I could not care less about if they get to see pictures of my boilerplate looking bedroom or me looking bored if I happen to be at the computer.

I wonder if the people who do cover their webcam on their computer do the same thing with their phone. I mean... You're as much likely to get hacked there yet I don't think nearly as many people cover their phone camera.

Tell me. If I am in front of a webcam I'm not using, which is not often, why would I cover it? So someone can look at my deadpan face looking at my screen? I'd be more worried about people literally standing behind me. Or someone actually looking at my screen, not me.

It's a small piece of masking tape, why is that funny or notable?

Because frankly, 99.99% of people aren't close to important enough to have it be worth gaining access to their webcam. Unless you're a celebrity (hey mark Zuckerberg), or like, a spy or something it realistically wouldn't be worth anyone's time to get access to your webcam in the first place.

It's a daft worry born of conspiracy theory nonsense at best, which is kinda humourous I suppose.

I tore a small piece of masking tape and covered my laptop camera in 10 seconds.

I wouldn't call that effort, nor do I think I'm important, but it gives me peace of mind for what little I can control these days.

Some people are just weird and could or would do this to anyone.

Before moving onto a my PC, I always had it covered. Especially after noticing a website years ago where people can tap into people's webcams to watch them.

I don't watch or download porn, I don't torrent movies or tv shows, I don't have an exciting life. Feel free to hack my computer if you want to see how many times I have to restart various podcasts because I fall asleep listening to them.

It's a completely justified thing to do, and absolutely naive to criticize others for doing so. Now on your work computer or device, maybe that's a little much, I don't know.

My work laptop was required to have the webcam removed. A guy from IT literally came, opened up the laptop, and took out the camera before I was allowed to power it on for the first time.

I do, but mostly because apps aren't good at "no touching" rules. In fact, most don't seem to appreciate basic privacy at all. So yes, preventing automatic face recognition is in your best interest. In particular with kids around btw, who are growing up in a world without consent to their privacy.

Capitalism can't be trusted, nor can companies, and it gets worse when dealing with regimes like China, Russia, or a host of other parties (political or not) who would see harm done to yourself or even random people you've met and were tagged by their systems. Being hacked is a far lesser concern (almost non-existent really).

Also, I truly despise how companies pretend to be about security, yet as soon as you turn any phone or computer, every single connection will be active and open without ANY security to it. The default setting should be the complete opposite.
edit: including such settings as "websites may access your everything"... if you don't have some IT background, you'd never even be aware that you're compromised in the most blatant manner.

So yeah, I cover that shit because people are really, really BAD at actual security.
