The FGO revenue thread bringing up the idea of a Fate character in Smash Bros made me recall this discussion topic I had with a few friends. It kind of came up during Goku DLC talks for Smash Ultimate, then we sort of realized that one of the biggest anime franchises right now, is also technically a video game franchise.

The Fate series got a lot more popular from its numerous anime, but before it was an anime, it was a visual novel on the PC.

The series from there grew mostly through light novels and anime, but the fact remains that it started as a video game. It's even maintained its presence in gaming through it's fighting games, RPGs, musou titles, and as previously mentioned, mobage.

Which brings up my topic: Would you consider the Fate series a video game franchise? And why? Also, would you consider a character from the series to be a viable rep in a game like Smash Bros.?

I myself have only engaged in the game for the record, actually through the Extella games on the Switch.

This is like asking "do you consider Pokemon to be a video game franchise?"

The answer to both questions is yes.

It is absolutely a game franchise, but it's a very different category of gaming (which is to say, one with no historical relevance to Nintendo and too recent to fall into the "classics") than you typically see in Smash. It's hard to imagine it having a chance getting in.

I'd say it's more ambiguous as whether it's a video game franchise or not. The VN is a game technically, unlike Dragon Ball which isn't. I'm inclined to say yes, it would count as a video game franchise.

I don't think it's anywhere near big enough to be in Smash though.

I feel like that's different though, since Pokemon's an RPG and Fate started as a visual novel, the latter not being considered a game by some folk, while the former pretty much unanimously is, hence my question.

I wouldn't call it to recent, as the first visual novel was released all the way back in 2004. Plus Persona is in smash, and that series started in 2006 with Persona 3.

I would not consider it a game franchise

The original VN was more pornography than anything else, and it took a decade of animes to build up more popularity for the brand to the point the VN is invalidated

Yep. Visual Novels are games.

And no, Fate as a franchise just doesn't deserve to represent gaming. In terms of writing and character design, it's gone off the deep end, especially with Grand Order's servants.

In terms of multimedia, Prisma Ilya is the point where I lost interest in the series due to the gimmicky focus on pedobait magical girls. And don't get me started on Apoocrypha.

What I mean is that, like, Pac-Man works in Smash because he's from that classic 80/90s gaming era along with Mario, DK, Link, etc. where he fits into an overarching theme.

Joker himself doesn't really fit the Smash mold either, but Atlus and Nintendo go waaaaay back and Joker is their most popular character at the moment. Type-moon and Nintendo don't really have history like that.

I mean sure but I really doubt Nintendo want the "cum is magic" franchise front and center on one of their biggest properties.

I absolutely think Saber has a place in Smash.

The hentai aspects haven't been a part of the franchise since its original release and the writer never wanted them to begin with.

Why is being a VN suggested as the barrier for Smash and not the hentai part of it?
Good point, instead we should just add a character that isn't from a porn game, like Nero:

Or how about Mystery Heroine X
421px-Portrait_Servant_155_F.png

Or maybe saber's son, Mordred
424px-Portrait_Servant_076_F.png

Nah, we should gender bender saber and just add Arthur instead.

Why wouldn't VN be considered a game seeing that they are a subgenre of Adventure games?

I do think that Nintendo wouldn't want to reference Fate's porno origins like some here already mentioned though. Smash seems to take pride in referencing various video game factoids for characters no mater how obscure.

You know that Nintendo hires hentai artists to work on its first-party games, right? I don't think Fate will ever be represented in Smash, but the series' origins as an eroge isn't the main reason.

If you wanna make *real* money, but JAlter in Smash.

But yes, the Fate series is a Video Game franchise. Don't let some goofy sex scenes distract you from the dozens of hours of Nasuverse mindfuckery.

I hope you like promoting massive and egregious sexualization of historical figures in your Smash Bros.

No seriously fuck off. Fate is just world-wide massive hentai circlejerk for the weebs. If I ever could be serious in deleting anime, it is so I can google Nero Claudius without 'real' at the end.

Yes it's a video game franchise. I'd love having best saber Nero as a representative in Smash.

I consider Visual Novels a genre of game so, yeah, Fate's a game series first and foremost in my mind. I wouldn't want to see Saber or anyone else is Smash tho- Cloud was bad enough, I prefer Smash characters being tied to Nintendo in ways that matter.

they're adventure games over there

Yes and yes. I don't even play FGO and only played the original VN for like 15 min but I'd love Saber in Smash. She'd for sure have a kickass moveset

I just play the games, but I'm fascinated at how common this mentality is among the franchise's fans.
The franchise has many high points, but infinitely more low ones. You don't have to dig very deep for it to become amazingly stupid. And there's enough questionable stuff in there for it to get 'cancelled' a hundred times over.

It's a weird chimera of a franchise, I guess, which is fitting.

I probably would consider it a video game franchise, but not one that has remotely earned a place among the giants of the medium that populate the Smash roster, especially when you're talking about the non-Nintendo characters. The very idea of Fate standing alongside Castlevania and Sonic is absurd.

Lol. That's why there's over 60 hours of reading with all the porn cut out. Because it's mostly porn.

I have mixed feelings on the original VN (pretty shoddy writing with great ideas), and think FZ is significantly better than anything else in the franchise, but let's not be ridiculous.

Technically it's a lot bigger than most game franchises (is Gran Turismo a 'big' franchise? Because it's made more money than that), but I'd agree it doesn't really belong in Smash.

If Goku is not in Smash, no other anime has the right to be in it.
I like Arturia, but fate is a pedo bait series now. Hentai crazy whales keep that game alive.

can't they just not reference anything from the problematic sides of the series? there other series like Metal Gear that have things that would be too quetionable to reference and show in Smash Bros. and they avoid those areas.

this would still be something more deserving to be in Smash than Dragon Ball though.

They could make it work, but there would still be a news element that would boil down to "You won't believe that Nintendo added a porno character to Smash!"

Tell you what though, I'd love to have at least one visual novel / adventure game character playable in Smash. Ashley from Another Code is a character trophy in Brawl at the very least.

Phoenix Wright would probably be the easiest one to justify and squeeze through, especially since Capcom has already turned him into a fighter before.

Saber has a sword though.

And smash loves swords

It could probably count as a video game franchise, but considering the company behind the IP has never had any communication with Nintendo, with only 2 multiplatform spinoff of their IP being on a Nintendo console, i'm pretty sure Nintendo would never think to do a collab with them on something, much less ask to license one of their characters for Smash. You need to know the other exist in your sphere to even think of starting talks.

Yes, it is a video game series. No, I don't think it should be in Smash.

There's a lot of really problematic stuff in there from what I've seen, even if you just go by the later games and not the hentai.

What? Fate started as a visual novel. Those are video games. It's a video game series. The various anime adaptations are the adaptations.

[citation needed]

I'm gonna need to know where you get that figure from. You're going to tell me Saber is bigger than all of the following?

Mario (Dr. included)
Donkey Kong
Link (all of them)
Samus (including Dark Samus and Zero Suit Samus under this)
Yoshi
Kirby
Fox
Pikachu
Luigi
Jigglypuff
Peach
Daisy
Bowser
Sheik
Zelda
Pichu
Marth
Ganondorf
Mewtwo
Wario
Snake
Pokemon Trainer
Diddy Kong
Sonic
Lucario
Villager
Mega Man
Wii Fit Trainer
Greninja
Rosalina
Pac-Man
Bowser Jr.
Duck Hunt
Ryu
Ken
Cloud
Inkling
Simon
Isabelle
Incineroar
Piranha Plant
Mii Fighters

These all are somewhat popular characters, I didn't include the ones that are more obscure (Shulk, Bayo, all FE characters except Marth, etc.). That's about 70% of the roster right there.
