The FGO revenue thread bringing up the idea of a Fate character in Smash Bros made me recall this discussion topic I had with a few friends. It kind of came up during Goku DLC talks for Smash Ultimate, then we sort of realized that one of the biggest anime franchises right now, is also technically a video game franchise.
The Fate series got a lot more popular from its numerous anime, but before it was an anime, it was a visual novel on the PC.
The series from there grew mostly through light novels and anime, but the fact remains that it started as a video game. It's even maintained its presence in gaming through it's fighting games, RPGs, musou titles, and as previously mentioned, mobage.
Which brings up my topic: Would you consider the Fate series a video game franchise? And why? Also, would you consider a character from the series to be a viable rep in a game like Smash Bros.?
I myself have only engaged in the game for the record, actually through the Extella games on the Switch.
