I definitely judge people who don't use avatars and instead of the default letter-in-a-colored-box ones.

I must admit that I perceive people with "half-bust close-up render of generic western video-game character" avatars as to be taken less seriously.

As for mine, I hand-crafted it myself (from time to time I replicate sprites 1:1 on grid paper to relax)

The answer to this is 100% yes

It's just a basic facet of human psychology - you do it even if you don't think you do

Agreed.

Also, your avatar looks great. I also take people with Kirby-related avatars more seriously.

i just kind of assume that everyone with an ahegao avatar is going to rant at me about libertarianism at some point

Yes.

Just look at how anime icon users are treated. Here it's much more mild than in other places, but your icon definitely affects how others perceive you.

I'd probably be much better understood with a Bill Burr icon TBH. Everyone always thinks I'm crazy serious here regardless of how ridiculous what I'm saying actually is.

I'm feeling better now.

As for judging others, after reading the anime social hierarchy thread, maybe I should start judging others.

So, seeing some of the responses here has me genuinely curious. And I am hopeful that this question will lead to some well thought out responses and excellent discourse instead of a thread derail, potentially speaking.

For those of you whom have consciously and even unconsciously ( later recognizing your view down the road ) found their opinions of an individual skewed based on their avatar, did you ever find that your bias was in fact incorrect, good or bad, and was any effort made to correct those assumptions and skewed opinions?

Early on in my life in my ignorance as a teenager I found my perceptions of some people were startlingly incorrect. Granted, these were interactions in the physical groundings of life in high school. Which I feel gave it more impact and taught me some important lessons upon my own self reflection.

Here in a forum on the internet, the impact for many may be lessened. I am curious though if anyone has ever taken a step back and looked at things through a lens of introspection and decided to change their opinions individually, or as a whole.

I generally don't pay a lot of attention unless it demands attention. I was on a small fan site years back, when GG started up, and a guy with a rotation of porno avatars was constantly insisting he loves women. It was very hard to take him seriously. He loved them fit, naked, and splayed, sure.

Meh unless you're a fan of PC mech games from the 90s you wouldn't even recognize my avatar, so I doubt it affects people's perception of my tone.

I generally don't consider people's avatars myself either.

I'm always super conscious of myself coming off as standoffish because Apollo looks a little aggro in my avatar.

I had a much more gentle-looking one at the old place (assuming you didn't know anything about the character), I suppose some might potentially perceive me as moodier/more standoffish than intended based on my current one.

I'm a smarmy jerk so... I think the tone comes off perfectly. Also, I'm a goddamn space wizard.
