No way.

What it proves is that Sony does not care about them.
Why would anyone play this?

PS classic was a bad product: bad game selection, bad emulation, bad reviews, bad opinion on forums, expensive at launch...

If Sony had as many memorable first party games as Nintendo, could PS classic had been a success? Of course, but they don't, not even close, so they did try to get as many PS Classic as they considered worth the money investment. For Nintendo the only problem was emulating all the game they already had, it's really easy for them to take any system and select 20-30 classics only from their own franchises (and even so, I can't imagine a SNES MINI without FF VI or Super Castlevania IV, and if some day Nintendo releases GC Mini without RE4, it would be really bad). But they are the only company that can do this tbh, both Sony and Microsoft's systems are more defined by temporar 3rd party exclusives.

So if the question is that Sony doesn't own classics, then yeah, that's true. Even Crash isn't from Sony now.

Literally any member of resetera could come up with a list of 20 ps1 games that would have made the classic more appealing then one Sony did.

I just got this thing yesterday, severely discounted.
Didn't even take it out of the box yet, not sure I even want to. It's a badly thought out piece of kit, but it looks nice, which is what I wanted it for.

Sony has plenty of classics, or rather, the PlayStation does.
The entire premise of this thread is a non-sequitur.

Coming up with a list is easy. The trouble is it would be filled with third party games. And that's the biggest problem, Sony would have to maintain a low price while also simultaneously having to pay out the nose for more and bigger third party titles than Nintendo did.

Nintendo have cultivated and sold an idea where gaming is timeless. Sony have not. This is why their machines have so different fate in the market place.
Why's everyone clamoring for PS1 classics on PS4 then?

The nostalgia is as strong for PS1 games than it is for SNES games.

SNES games themselves weren't high-grade arcade perfect fighting games in terms of timeless gameplay. Sony has cultivated a huge arcade, gameplay-first catalog. Some of the best shmups are on PS1 during that era, some of the best fighting games? PS1 Some of the best RPGs? PS1, Some of the best racers? PS1

Nintendo didn't cultivate shit, they actively attempted to criminalize emulation, virtual console offering was dogshit with poor emulators for years. Retro players and emulator developers cultivated it, Nintendo worked against it with all their might and set it back several years.

Sony has plenty of classics!

They just didn't put them on this ill conceived, abysmal product. No wonder it failed. It deserved to fail. But not because Sony has no classics.

For me the big mistake was that Sony don't releasing the PS1 Classics on PS4. Seriously, Sony will not release these games for the PS4?

It proves that licensing sucks. Some of the actual "classic" PS1 titles were likely impossible or too expensive for Sony to include. They clearly left it wide open on purpose for people to add games to it though, stopping just short of *wink wink nudge nudge*.

It's a machine that calls itself a "classic" without most of the classics that people have actually played. Not only that, but the stuff that was there was worse for whatever reason. Tekken 3 was a perfect port when it originally came out. I don't know how you screw that up, but somehow they did.

What a terrible OP

SquareEnix could literally release a SE Classic console with as many PS1 games as the PS Classic has. The PS1 was stuffed with classics, but obviously the licensing deals back then werent written with stuff like this in mind.

Honestly though the hardware itself is pretty great, given how easy it is to do whatever you want and all the consoles it is powerful enough to emulate.

I just bought one at $30 and it's got like 280+ PS1 games now. I love it. I think a different selection of games would have completely changed the narrative on this thing, but it would have been nice if they handled this piece of hardware differently than Nintendo. Like, if they'd even thought about doing something different.

Not really, it's just a combination of factors, the PS1 was known for its third party titles, the same titles the PS1 Classic lacks. Plus bad emulation, plus most people think early 3D games don't hold up, graphically or mechanically.

In the my part of the UK at least everyone I know that owned a ps1 did it purely because piracy was so easy.

I was the lonely kid with a saturn that was mocked by all his friends.

In a perfect world, without licensing issues to worry about and with the Dual Shock controller included in the package, this would've been the line-up for the PS Classic. I'm being realistic and limiting it to 20 titles by the way (although I easily could've added 20 more).

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Final Fantasy VIII
  • Tekken 3
  • Jumping Flash!
  • Alundra
  • Klonoa: Door to Phantomile
  • Gran Turismo 2
  • Ape Escape
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Fear Effect
  • Silent Hill
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Crash Bandicoot 2
  • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 or 3
  • WipEout 3
  • Vagrant Story
  • Rival Schools
  • Legend of Kain: Soul Reaver
  • Twisted Metal 2
That would've made for a pretty amazing little mini console. Unfortunately, as has been well documented by this point, Sony chose to shit out a half-hearted, overpriced, cash grab of a system. When the PS Classic was initially announced and the first five titles were revealed, there was a lot of positive buzz surrounding it, and for instance I remember it charting highly in Amazon's best-selling chart. What completely destroyed it was the bad word of mouth that resulted from the fifteen other games that were announced and all the negative details that poured out from the preview events. The online chatter of 50hz games, poor emulation, lack of options and lazy UI design killed its momentum stone dead. And frankly, nobody wants to shell out £90 for a device that has Battle Arena Toshinden, Rainbow Six, Cool Boarders 2, Destruction Derby and Persona 1 taking up slots. It honestly blows my mind to this day how hard Sony blew it with the PS Classic. It's like they were completely out of touch with what the expectations were and what consumers wanted. A total lack of awareness beyond "Oh hey, FFVII and Metal Gear are on this thing, the rest will work itself out." What a shambles.

The PS1 is an amazing system. Still my favourite to this day. And in terms of first-party output, Sony didn't have a lot of commercial juggernauts on the level of your Crash Bandicoot's and Final Fantasy's, but they did still put out a lot of games that reviewed well and/or found sales success, like Kurushi, Parappa/Um Jammer Lammy, WipEout, Jumping Flash!, Vib Ribbon, MediEvil, Syphon Filter, Alundra and Ape Escape. Hell, even something as obscure as Boku no Natsuyasumi is an absolute gem, and should be played if you happen to know some Japanese. Shame that it never got localised. Quite honestly, I miss that weird and experimental streak their games had during that era compared to this gen.
