Calling out foreigners is a slippery slope. I'm sure people in the US would be happy to return the favor. Why even start that.

Everyone is human. There are plenty of good and bad people in the world regardless of culture.

Or

You mind your business

Actually wait, yea you should go around interrupting tinder dates, that's totally cool
oh no. It was the worst.
List of topics, American dude was trying to impress German girl with:

- his stance on Obama’s healthcare policies
- that whole he doesn’t like Trump’s “sometimes lies” that he likes some of his polices, and he’s a
Policy guy
- that our healthcare is the greatest in the world and others wish they were us
- that Americans have moral authority to tell others what to do.

... that is where I got off and turned to the woman and said “he is the worst example of an American... run.”

also? Hiroshima... you are an amazing town.

There are a few obnoxious American tourists in public transport in Tokyo, speaking very loudly when the rest of the carriage is very quiet, but I’ve made peace with that because they’re just enjoying a fun vacation .

You sound like an insufferable snob, OP. Would you act this way to local Japanese if they were doing the same? Stay out of people's business.
No. Because I’m not Japanese and I don’t understate the culture. But someone from my culture being a bum? Regardless of where they are on the international date line they fall, going to make sure to check them.

I mind my business (who wants to get stabbed?) but I call people out when it crosses a line.
Don’t be afraid to do that when you have the cultural context to do so. Don’t put yourself or others in danger.

Major thread fail.

As fellow Americans, we need to call out thread fails.

And this one is a case study.

No need to thank me, I'm just out here doing my part and calling out thread fails for America.

Pretty sure OP is also American based on his posts.

i think the whole mind ya business thing is fine, but if someone is really truly being a dick then yeah they should be called out on.

that tinder thing above though op should have just left alone. Not worth it. Need more details about the bar thing.

What a trash ass thread.

Do this on your own if you want to OP but dont come on here acting as if you're giving us some revelatory advice when all it is your doing is trying to toot your own horn.

Its painfully obvious.

You didn't actually do this, did you? Please tell me you didn't actually do this. Even if it was just a fantasy in your head I'm still getting secondhand embarrassment here. I can't.

Also, how long have you been living abroad? I think you might be relatively new to the experience.

I just gave dirty looks to people who were being clearly idiotic in Japan. To be fair though, there are a lot of very specific culture things in Japan that are wildly different from the US (server/patron Interactions, being quiet on the train, specific smoking zones, among a variety of other things), so I won’t blame people for not understanding those things immediately, but in the case that you’re describing, Id definitely explain that servers won’t really do anything unless you specifically ask them to. If he proceeds to be a dick, then whatever.

Most foreigners I ran into were super cool. Traveling abroad to Japan isn’t usually a thing close-minded people do.

In what fantasy land is it cool to just come at random strangers like that? Sounds way more aggressive and Ameri-bro tough guy than the "offenses" in question ironically. Quite frankly, if I were at the receiving, I'd tell the person to go fuck themselves and mind their own business.

I just wish I had a video of how you go about this "calling out", like do you just stand up and position yourself with your hands on your hips like the moral authority of all American tourists and then proceed to lecture the offender...how does this go down and how do you avoid a potential ass kicking afterwards? Do you hightail it into the nearest public transport...a cab?

British, French, German and Russian tourists are way worse than Americans
but the king of worst tourist right now are Chinese.

Americans' main hang up is that their expectations on customer service to be the same all over the world but that doesn't hold a candle to the other above mentioned
I would actually rank the Germans as the best tourists I have ever experienced here in Italy. British are great, too, as long as they aren't coming here for a football match. But football fans are the worst tourists everywhere.

Sooo, this guy pissed you off with “Americans have the moral authority to tell others what to do”, and your reaction is to make a thread to tell Era what to do (about American tourists).

As for service being “inadequate” - it’s not filling a drink, but patron not asking for it. And being shitty about it - Openly being rude to server, who was managing a bar. I side with servers 100% of the time.
Americans are maybe too accustomed to their style of waitering: always present, always close, always asking, always filling the fillable.

In Europe, at least where tipping isn't a custom, waiters just mind their own business and leave customer chill and eat in peace until they are called or they see you want to order.

You simply come off as someone who wants to be noticed for their moral superiority. Give it a break. Sure of someone is being completely out of line you should say/do something. But the examples you gave are not that.

Mind your own business, you arent some country perception saving superhero.

After which she said "thanks" while you tipped your fedora and replied, "no need for thanks m'lady, it's what us real Americans do." Then you left a tip on your table while everyone else clapped as you exited the bar.

If you ever go to Japan, the worst looks you'll get as a foreigner will be from other foreigners.

I think it's died down a bit now but it's still funny to see.
What is it with the whole alpha gaijin thing in Japan, anyway? Why does Japan seem to have that effect on people. It's sometimes subtle, sometimes glaringly obvious, but I did notice it while I was there. A lot of Western people just seem to hate/look down upon/avoid most other Westerners there.

Here in China everyone's pretty chill with one another. You get the occasional guy with the "oh all the other foreigners are just here to party and I know all about the culture and language and blah blah blah" attitude but it's very rare. Foreigners tend to be very friendly with one another and intermingle with each other and with the Chinese very well. Despite this country being a literal evil fucking empire of the modern age.

OP, an American, also felt he had the moral authority to interrupt a date to tell a woman she should head for the hills because he deemed her date to be inadequate for her.

I don’t travel too often but I have been traveling more so I want to ask this straight up: What makes an American tourist good? I try my best to be polite, mind my manners and shit.

This. I know some folks here love a good old fashioned America-bashing but if you don’t wanna keep that same energy all the way around best to leave it be...

Reality:

I'm willing to bet those two bonded over the continuously funny story of that American weirdo randomly butting into their shit in the middle of Japan. Then they fucked each others' brains out all night while mocking him and waving a Trump 2020 flag.
