So as far as rumours for E3 go, the impending announcement of Donkey Kong: World by Retro Studios is probably one of the more interesting and probable ones out there. As a DK studio, it only makes sense that Retro would be working hard on another game in their acclaimed series, much to the delight of fans around the WORLD. It's been so many years since we last saw Retro Studios, so I'm really excited to see what they've been cooking up with DK: World and to see if the hype was truly justified on this one.
Donkey Kong: World would - if rumours are to be believed - be a pretty significant departure from the previous entries in the franchise. Being able to explore a large world freely and use the different powers of the DK crew to battle enemies and find secrets could be a really interesting one if done justice. Having seen what Nintendo is capable of with Belda: Breath of the Wild, I wonder if Retro has taken some inspiration from that for their own game. I would love to solve shrines with Cranky Kong, figuring out the best ways to solve the puzzles, and I think Nintendo knows this.
I had a dream about Donkey Kong: World last night that inspired me to create this thread. Miyamoto told me I was playing the game wrong because I was trying to beat the areas as quickly as possible to progress the exciting story: but he insisted I should try to find all the golden bananas before moving on. I told him I thought he would appreciate the desire for different gamers to play games in their own way, but he stole the controller from my hand and showed me there was a golden banana hidden behind a big log where only Dixie Kong could squeeze through. I guess this means the game could also be taking some inspiration from Mario Odyssey? I certainly wouldn't complain.
I think we could expect to see Donkey Kong: World as a surprise announcement for a December 2018 release. It definitely seems like the kind of game Nintendo would use to wrap up the calendar year, and the open-world nature of the game (as well as being a long-awaited entry in a popular franchise) could attract new buyers to the Switch.
What do you guys think? What are you most excited for in Donkey Kong: World? Is it a Day 1 purchase for you?
