"Don't Let Colin Trevorrow Gaslight you Into Thinking 'Book Of Henry' Is Anything But Garbage"

I’m still sore that Rian Johnson went to bat for Trevorrow on Twitter, taking me to task for “being a dick” and blocking me.

I was fucking right, in the end.

You must have been a massive dick cus he used to just mute people and recently started blocking them.
Back when it was first announced that Johnson would write/direct 8, and Trevorrow announced to direct 9, there was speculation that Johnson would pen the screenplay for both.

This is back when I thought Johnson could “do no wrong” with Star Wars (he did). So I simply tweeted that it would be ideal to keep Trevorrow away from the screenplay for 9. Johnson didn’t like that.

Did you tweet that AT Johnson?

This guy is whack man... And people still bitching about Ep VIII plot? (btw, I think is great). Glad he was tossed out for Ep IX. At least we are going to have a safe Star Wars movie.

Isn't book of henry that movie where halfway thru the trailer it becomes a political spy thriller starring a mother and her two sons? Yeah I didn't expect to sit thru that one

The ballerina scene in Book of Henry is gonna have to be shown in film schools in a decade for exactly how not to construct a scene.

Not a political spy thriller, but the movie does pivot into something truly bizarre halfway through.
Halfway through Henry, the older brother, suddenly dies of a brain hemorrage and it turns out he left his mom very specific instructions in a diary (the book of Henry) and on an amazingly timed cassette recording on how to kill his neighbour who maybe raped his daugher-in-law.

Weird coincidence, I was just watching the FoldingIdeas video on this movie last night and woke up to find this thread here.
That movie is terrible and the idea that anyone involved in it thought they were making and emotionally deep and likeable/relatable main character is absolutely hilarious. The mum was pretty cool though, using a woman gamer as a primary character in a film has potential to be such a great inclusion of a group of people who aren't represented much. Having her gaming be used as an excuse to claim she's a negligent mother (without anything actually shown in the film to back that up. Just Henry being a dick and acting like she is.) and then
deciding she'll happily do a murder based on a book her 10 year old kid wrote before he died
undercut any potential for her to be a good character.

There is no doubt about that. This narrative that it's some masterpiece that only SW fanboys hate because of their reasons isn't true. The general consensus seems to be lukewarm/good not great
Sorry, there is no doubt about that? Come on. That narrative exists because it is actually true. The film was highly critically acclaimed, and the objective measurements of audience opinion like CinemaScore and Comscore, which are actually scientific surveys of audience opinion after leaving the theater rather than completely meaningless online polls like Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB where you can vote on a film without even having seen it and make spoof accounts, showed that audiences loved the film and gave it the highest possible rating. At the end of the day, a minority of extremely vocal fans disliked it, and pretty much everyone else liked it or loved it.

Anyway it's bewildering that people can even begin to compare Trevorrow to Rian Johnson, what a joke. The Book of Henry is one of the worst films I've ever seen, although it's also brilliant and everyone should go see it. Rian Johnson is actually a really, really good director. His films have ranged from good (Brothers Bloom) to excellent (Looper). Trevorrow is just a hack.

Wow. Dude is nuts and Book of Henry sounds like such an amazing train wreck that now I want to see it out of morbid curiosity.

Trevorrow really just comes off like a low-intelligence kind of guy.

How good is Safety Not Guaranteed? I've never seen it nor heard of it until I learned Trevorrow was gonna direct Jurassic World. Just found it odd this guy came out of nowhere to make JW and almost directed Episode IX.
It's not good. People that recommend it are not to be trusted. Basically people acted like that shit was some sort of underrated indie classic solely because the man had been chosen to direct a Jurassic Park movie.

I haven't seen Book of Henry but I just read this review from the story in the OP which was mentioned and holy crap, it sounds so bad.

Also I want to quote this part from the story in the OP because I think it's great lol, but it has Book Of Henry spoilers so be aware

“It’s a foundational myth. It’s a noble ghost story. Where a character lives on after death in order to guide a hero to find their strength and defeat ultimate evil. And structurally, I can’t…but you’re gonna print this, unfortunately. I’m saying this now. But the way that I look at movies, I do see Avatar and Titanic and Jurassic World [as] very similar movies. Henry was Obi-Wan Kenobi. And he died in the middle. And he left a set of instructions on how to take out the Death Star where Darth Vader was holding a Princess captive. And at the very end, when he had the target in his sights, he had to remember his training. Guided by this ghostly voice. And then Han Solo comes in with the Rube Goldberg machine and gives him the moment. And ultimately the Princess saves herself.”

The Book of Henry Wikipedia entry is such a rollercoaster.

SNIPER RIFLE just comes out of nowhere.
Replace that with rocket launcher, keep the plot with the neighbor, and you have yourself an actual Resident Evil.

So I looked up gaslighting again, because it is used so very very very often on this forum

Gaslighting is a form of psychological manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, making them question their own memory, perception, and sanity. Using persistent denial, misdirection, contradiction, and lying, it attempts to destabilize the target (person) and delegitimize the target's belief.
I am not sure this word applies to a director defending the quality of a movie others consider shite.
