Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age follows the perilous journey of a hunted hero who must uncover the mystery of his fate with the aid of a charismatic cast of supporting characters. They embark on a quest taking them across continents and over vast oceans as they learn of an ominous threat facing the world.

Dragon Quest 11 brings a massive, gorgeous world to life in a style that blends stylistic cel-shading with photorealistic detail.

Engage in a turn-based battle system that eases players into combat with an accessible experience, featuring mechanics simple enough for novices but with enough depth to satisfy long-time fans.

Dragon Quest 11 features tons of side-quests and mini-games that provide enough content to keep you playing for well over 100 hours.

Editions

Edition of Lost Time. PS4 version only, $150 USD. Square Enix store exclusive.

Edition of Light. PS4 physical / PS4 digital / Steam, $60 USD / £49.99 /

Quick turn-based combat

For the first time in the series, Dragon Quest 11 features truly turn-based combat. In the past, battles proceeded in a round-based fashion, with all of your characters acting, and then enemies acting, etc. This time, each participant's turn can come up at any moment. The game features two different camera modes, as well -- one allows you to move your characters around the battlefield and control the camera freely, and the other features quick camera cuts that focus on the action.

Get pepped up

Occasionally in battle, your characters will be imbued with a blue aura and become able to use special abilities. If other members of your party are also pepped up, you may also be able to engage in team techniques.

The casino... I spent like, 40 hours in there, innit?

Despite its absence in Dragon Quest 9, the casino is back with a vengeance. Slot machines, roulette, it's all here.

Camping under the stars

As you explore the world, you'll come across goddess statues that your party can set up camp at. You'll have an opportunity to chat with your gang, purchase items, and even forge items.

The fun-size forge

In your travels, you may come across recipes for equipment and items. Using the fun-size forge at campsites, you can create these items using materials you've collected on the field or won from enemies.

Power up

Using the character builder, you can choose how to power up your characters. You'll earn SP after each battle, which can be spent to learn skills on the character builder. Make your own path and get pumped up!

Side quests

If you played Dragon Quest 9, you may be groaning right about now. Hold on, though; Dragon Quest 11's side quests are different. This time around, almost every quest has its own small storyline, and none of them ask you to kill a metal slime with a mage, I promise.

And more...

The western version of Dragon Quest 11 has even more stuff compared to the Japanese release.

  • Voice acting for all story scenes
  • Overhauled user interface
  • Photo mode
  • Dash feature
  • New restrictions added to Draconian Mode, detailed below

JVOdfEf.png

Draconian Mode is a set of restrictions you can pick and choose to enable when starting a new game. They range from silly options like "shypox," to some of the more useful new options for the western release, such as reduced experience from easy fights. Here's the full listing:

  • No fleeing from battle
  • No shopping
  • No armor
  • Reduced experience from easy fights (experience from enemies lower level than you will be halved)
  • All enemies are super strong (the stats of enemies are increased)
  • Shypox (you occasionally find yourself too shy to speak with NPCs)
Any of these restrictions can be disabled at any time by visiting a church in the game, but be warned that once disabled, they cannot be turned back on unless you start a new game.

What's with the music? Why does it sound so bad?

Unfortunately, the game's composer, Koichi Sugiyama, would not allow the game to have orchestrated music, because he would prefer people be enticed to purchase concert tickets and CDs. As a result, the in-game music suffers. It's regrettable, but as someone who has played through the game three times, I can say that it is something you do get used to.

I heard Koichi Sugiyama is anti-LGBT, and racist. Is that true?

Yes. He is also a Japanese war crime denier, and it's terrible. Please read this thread for more information.

If you're really bothered by this, and you choose to pass on the game because of it, that's you're prerogative. Discussion about this particular aspect would probably be better relegated to the above thread where it can be more useful, however. You might also consider donating to a charity to offset your purchase, such as The Trevor Project or Human Rights Campaign, or another of your choice.

MOD EDIT (Apologies, don't want to wreck the nice OP here):

All, please be careful with spoilers. While this game can be difficult to exactly describe where you are in the story without giving things away, please try to take care when posting your progress or answering others' questions.

Here's an example of a bad spoiler.

OH MY GOD I JUST GOT
Darth Vader and he's my father? Wut

Here's a better one:

OH MY GOD BUNNIES WERE THE ENEMY ALL ALONG[/spoiler]

This goes for other games as well. If someone asks a question, don't respond with "No that doesn't happen in DQXI, but in DQIV did you know that the bad guy is really your mother omg!?"
or even for things happening later in DQXI:
Don't respond with "No, but later in the game you get a mecha-spaceship that shoots rhinoceroses at enemies!"

This has been a great thread for the most part, please try and be considerate of your fellow players. Thanks.

I am 100% on-board with this game because Aeana created the OT.

It was already pre-ordered, but it makes me happy knowing that an RPG lover enjoyed this game enough to make an OT for us.

Cheers, Aeana!

Great OT for my most anticipated game of many years. I'll repost my impressions from the review thread:

---
Just played this game for ~5 hours. Been waiting 12 years for a fully HD Dragon Quest and it hasn't disappointed. The game looks so fucking good looking that I can forgive the 30 FPS, which has no effect on the actual gameplay anyway since its turn based. My only graphics complaint is that when you break barrels/pots they just like, motion blur away at 10 FPS. About as minor as complaints get. Other than that it looks like a dream.

Voice acting is solid overall except for everyone speaking a little slow. Usually by the time I've read the text the voice actor is like 1/3 through reading their line. I wish I could hear the voice acting at 1.5x speed. The guy who plays Erik did a great job, which is good because he's had by far the most dialogue so far.

The music doesn't bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. Orchestrated music still would've been better but I like the music as is. I did turn the music volume down in the settings though because some times it plays during voice acting and it was kinda drowning the dialogue out.

The actual gameplay is perfect for me. Again, everything I wanted out of an HD Dragon Quest. Loads of QOL options, everything is snappy and works exactly the way you want it to. This game is traditional in nature but it's still plenty modern. I'm going to be glued to my couch all weekend long.

I've been waiting for a console Dragon Quest (I've wanted to play) since 8 on the PS2. And now it's on PC?

Bring it!

Pre-ordered the game and I'm very pleased with reviews.

Back when the game got announced I decided it would be my first mainline and DQ game and we're finally here. Excited to jump in after enjoying the setting, enemies and music from Dragon Quest Builders.

How long have I waited for another mainline DQ game to come to the states? The wait has been TOO DAMN LONG!

I am beyond excited to play this, I will finish my replay of DQ8 in the next couple days and it has me made me more hyped for this one. Hope this OT is banging and bumping and it sells wonderfully so that we may get some DQM love again

Really excited for folks to jump into this. It's a lovely time.

Quick question for anyone with the JP version that already has an English copy - do trophies stack, or do the two versions share a list? I'm in for going through the game again with VO, but might as well 100% it again if it has a separate list lol :/

I really don't understand why so many releases happen the freaking day after a major US holiday weekend. Would be nice to be playing already.

can't wait. thought i could hold off for a few months and nurse my backlog... but lately i've been getting the feels, remembering staying up all night playing DQVIII. the 25% GMG discount pushed me over the edge and now it's all i've been thinking about

pretty confident with the day 1 steam release they know what they're doing on the PC side this go around. here's hoping... HD DQ on PC will be glorious hopefully

So I'm a few hours in and have been playing with Stronger Monsters options on. Some thoughts:

Overall it's not been too bad. I definitely have to heal more and some battles drag on but I've never died or needed to grind just yet. I keep my equipment updated and play it safe. Will report back when I get further on and hit a boss.

Just got my copy in Toronto!

The game feels great so far, like classic Dragon Quest but with gorgeous visuals. I was also surprised to see the boxart is reversible. You can flip it around to display the Japanese cover!

I'm pissed some of you already have this, but I guess I'll get over it at midnight on Monday. I'm definitely getting more excited as we get closer. DQ8 is one of my favorite JRPGs, also really liked 5.

Waiting for benchmarks on the new Nvidia cards before I can finish my build and play this, but I'm looking forward to playing this again in 4K 60FPS with voices. At least it's a little free time to play Spiderman and Xenoblade. :P

My favorite Japanese RPG so far this generation. Very satisfying and well-crafted game.

Got to play like an hour of it before my kids took over the TV. Really gorgeous looking game. I'm all about that classic battle mode.

Didn't think about donating to the Trevor project. I'm going to do that right now.

Question about a feature in the game that was part of the Japanese release:
Has there been any news on whether this offers the free version of the original Dragon Quest as a reward for beating the story?

Does the 'no shop' restrictions permanently lock you out of anything, or does it just means you have to rely on crafting for equipment, and drops/ finds for items?

Praise the sun. Square Enix just shipped my collector's edition! Doubt it'll be here Tuesday, but oh well.

Already know I'll love XI based on what I've played of the Japanese version. Such a fantastic game to bring single-player Dragon Quest into the HD era.

Amazing game. GOTY contender. FF needs to take some cues from Dragon Quest (this coming from someone who loves FF15).

Is it odd that the thing I'm looking forward to the most is the dialogue? Party chat has always been my favorite thing in the series and I heard this game has gobs of it, quality gobs of it.

No you are not alone, i've written some insights about the party chat in the review thread.
And fans will certainly enjoy hundreds of references, puns etc. imbedded in the dialogues.

By the way, thanks for the fantastic OT, Aeana.

Awesome and informative OT! Somehow despite having read a handful of reviews, this is the first time I actually read the specifics about Draconian Mode and... I'm disappointed. I was expecting a straight hard mode but that's more of a challenge one which sounds annoying rather than tougher. Oh well, hopefully the game isn't as easy as some claim.

Either way, it's crazy that this is the most excited I've been for any release this year despite only recently becoming a fan. Everything about the game looks like what I dreamed a traditional SNES era JRPG would be in the future.

I really can't wait, hopefully it arrives day one in my country. I just want to get immersed in its world already.

Good call on the Sugiyama part, hopefully people follow the suggestion.

Edit: Never mind, Draconian Mode rules are individual.

So beyond excited for this game. Though torn on platform to play on. If PC was confirmed to be decently optimized, and easily able to mod orchestrated music, it would be a bit easier. But I do have a PS4 Pro and 4K TV so that is nice too.

The tougher enemies one would function as a hard mode. In case it's not clear, each of those options can be enabled individually. I updated the phrasing in the OP to make that more clear.
