Cool.

Don't think I'll use any of the Draconian rules...or is there a recommended one? New to DQ mostly but I'm decent at RPGs.

The game is balanced for normal. You might find it easy to start, but if you don't overlevel, challenge picks up. It is easy to not overlevel since you can run around almost every encounter.

Oh man they really don't clue you in on Draconian Rules huh...just a prompt on the name entry screen that's so easy to miss. Not that I was going for it.

I couldn't think of a name so I went with Link. People keep saying "young Link" in the first town which gives me a chuckle.

Also I'm guessing that mysterious red door in town is post-game stuff right?

Later on in the game, yes. Same with jail doors. Keep note of where they are for later. It's worth it for what's behind them.

That pissed me off and is still my biggest complaint. I played for hours hours before coming to the thread and seeing that it even existed. Didn't want to redo and restart so unfortunately I played regular difficulty.

I know you can respec, but there's no skill route that's total trash right? Went Great Sword for Hero and Boomerang for Erik.

Should I bother using Erik's steal command, or is it just a way to net some extra stuff here and there. It's not like Zidane's from FFIX where great stuff is available if you abuse it right?

Greatsword for Hero, Knives for Erik were my starting routes. Erik with as early as possible dual wield is good for extra damage, but I feel like his dual weild dmg output is best during the mid to late game.

100% Important Items - Blank spot:

I'm looking for the item between the Calamus flute and the Sea Queen's conch. Can't find anything related here or anywhere.

Thanks for the help.

Everytime I reach a new map I go for all the Shiny Spots possible and try to find all the nearby monsters to fill the Bestiary.

That seems to be a decent amount of grinding I'd say?

Question for anyone who has finished the act 3 / extra story. Normally in things like Persona I don't bother going for the 'true ending' etc but in this I'm curious - I also dislike using guides to get specific things. Is act 3 doable just playing as I did with the rest of the game I just finished or is it something where you would end up stuck / underpowered without a guide.

I'm playing on normal.

I'm guessing I should save my pearls from the forge to upgrade end game weapons and armor?

Had fun crafting a few basic stuff, usually I avoid the depth of crafting mechanics in games but maybe I should put some effort here.

What's up with the harder monster Draconian Modifier just making bosses absolute destroy you?

Each time I get to a boss now I just know I have to go grind at least 3-5 levels just in order to take him down. I'm on Dora the Gray right now and its wrecking me with how many attacks it gets to do in a row plus charming. I've tried Serena and Sylvando to stop the charm but she does so much damage especially with her flick.

Ended up finally starting act 3 the other night. Nice to be back into things; I guess I can see it as almost an expansion pack of sorts, given my couple months off?

Though I mostly just did my initial revisit of towns (I'm a little disappointed not all of them have scenes) and ran around getting archery targets (and talking to cows for that trophy, but I'd only missed a couple it seems). Probably should have saved that for when I had quests/farming to do later, but I wanted it dealt with and it was a good opportunity to refamiliarize myself with the map.

Will probably actually get into the new story tonight.

You can always farm (by buying materials -> crafting easy +3s for the pearls -> selling back for more than it cost for the materials) or just outright buy pearls if needed. I'm not exactly sure what it's like at endgame, of course, but you probably don't need to be super reserved about using them.

Crafting is usually offputting for me but I really enjoy it here. Very simple to just look at what recipes I have, see what's the best improvement, and make that. It helps that (at least through act 2) the materials are often extremely easy to get enough of once you have access to them, especially since I barely ever spent money and so have a ton of gold to burn if I can just buy them (and that's not even considering what I could get if I used my casino tokens...).

It's the accessories that I never really know if I should make or not... besides some specifically useful things on some characters (making Rab go sooner was a very good idea, Jade has her MP restore thing, etc.) I feel like I'm kinda just slapping whatever on people.

Where is the best place to grind some EXP late game?

I'm at the fight with
Jasper Unbound
.

Can't tell if this is an act 3 boss I don't know about or the very late act 2 boss, lol. If the latter...

IIRC, I grinded right after that for a little bit on the metal enemies outside... Gondolia, I guess it was, at night; fight the metal dragon slimes and metal hands might show up, and those are what you want to kill. But there's also metal enemies in that dungeon as well, at the bottom of the big multilevel tower area that you can fly up as you unlock each level. That was a nice surprise, getting another couple levels as I returned from grinding.

Okay, I read you only get pearls the first time you craft an item but if you can buy them later I won't stress.

Think I'll probably craft as items get available but wait to upgrade. Upgraded my hero's Great Sword though to get me through the next couple of encounters.

Tomorrow is the first big day I'm off to play this, can't wait! Just got to the Manglegrove so my adventure has just begun!

Wow, the localization team went the extra mile for the Hotto haikus, huh? At the same time, the voice acting for this part comes across as a little...suspect at times. Also I've read that the rest of the game has areas influenced by real world locales (DQ III started this, right?), but are they just gonna use the same white character models for everywhere? It's kind of weird, but then again Akira Toriyama drawing people of color is...

Anyway, that aside, got Veronica and Serena...stuck them with their basic weapons as dedicated mage/healer seems good, also gave them those regen items I got with downloading the game. Now with them, it seems battles are becoming more involved with me having to use spells and such rather than just blindly attacking. Haven't got to a fight where I've needed to experiment with buffs and such though. Erik provides quick support with his boomerang to take care of stragglers, and my Hero right now seems like a tank with +3 Bronze Armor and a big +3 greatsword.

Even killed my first Metal Slime! It felt almost like the game kept it from fleeing till I beat it though....

Hey folks, sorry if I'm retreading old ground here.

I'm 7 hours in, heading off to fight the beast in Gallopolis, and while I'm enjoying the game I'm not really loving it. I can see myself dropping it soon, but I wanted to check in on the OT and see how the game progresses.

Does it get better over time, or will it be more of the same? It hasn't really grabbed me yet, and I have other games I could be playing.

For me it really opened it when I got a lot more abilities, I'd wait at least until you get the full party then decide but thats just me.

So I wrapped up act 2 and I don't know if I can be bothered with act 3.
The ending to act 2 felt perfectly fine and to have the game suddenly go from winding down to spinning back up kind of killed any momentum and interest in continuing, I got to the Mordegon fight in the castle before realising that my motivation to see the story through was totally gone. Is there more to act 3 than just fighting Mordegon again and then presumably fighting some super boss after and how long is the act?

What should I name my characters in English to try and give them their original Japanese names? Or just take these and do the best I can with turning them into romaji?
05td8hxizuo01.jpg

You can't change the party members names (unless you were planning on directly hacking the game script), but here are how the JP names are supposed to be romanized:

Camus (Erik)
Veronica
Senya(Serena)
Martina(Jade)
Row(Rab)
Sylvia(Sylvando)
Greg(Hendrick)
Homeros/Homelos(Jasper)

Wow...I've racked up like 7 levels trying to find the Golden Globe and then trying to get that Quest where you gotta get three party members pepped and use Wild Side.

You are at early Act 2. I'm nearing the end of Act 2 now, and there are 30 hourish difference between my current save file and the one made before the end of Act 1. Edit : forgot to mention that I'm trying to 100% monster bestiary and I did all the available sidequests, so that may bloat the number. For reference I have 50 hours at the end of Act 1.

Afaik there are Act 3 which serves as Post-Game, though not sure how important it is in term of story.

Which part of the game you don't like ? The story, the combat ?

For me, the first 10-15 hours are the weakest part of the game for me, both gameplay (not enough party member and barely any abilities unlocked) and story wise. Like I said in other threads, DQXI starts off alright (first 10-15 hours, not surprised if people dropped the game at this mark), then became good (20-30 hours), then became great (40-50 hours), then became masterpiece (70+ hours).

Say what you will about Toriyama's human designs, his creature designs are ace---the Sand Slayer looks absolutely menacing!

So... about Michelle?
She's at the Strand again, even though the stuff with her went down in the first act and shouldn't have been undone by the time leap. The Lonalulu villagers are talking about Kai (the grandson Kai, I think) going missing after luring some merpeople away from fishermen. Doesn't seem to be in Nautica so I'm stumped as to what the hell is going on here.

I actually love a lot of the designs and how they're animated. He has a nice range of goofy, cute, and badass designs.

Hmmm I'm at like 35 hours or so, not particularly trying 100% just a regular casual kind of play through. Just want to get through the meat of the game so I can lend my PS4 to a friend for a bit. So I want to play through the game and then pick it up again later for post gamey/completiony stuff later if i feel so inclined.

Can't believe how long this game is, just hit about 50 hours and think I'm like halfway through Act 2?

I'm plowing through things now even on Draconian, feels good. Things feel like they're coming to the climax and the story's really roping me in now.

So...did Sylvando use circus tricks to reanimate the Sand Slayer or were folks really in danger and he like one-shotted it for real.

Can't wait to get him in the party.

Platinum trophy acquired! :)

The timer still counts when you're on the PlayStation dashboard, right? Because my final time was something like 150 hours and that doesn't sound right at all!

Finished the game at around 141 hours with harder monsters on. Didn't go for platinum though since I think it's too much of a hassle. I think I got most of the endgame gear since the difficulty of reworking the equipment were 5 stars.

Fun game. Now I can resume playing VC4.
