Ah, that reminds me I still haven't played DQ Heroes 2. Really liked the first one, but the sequel went straight to the backlog. Too much stuff this year, I guess.
I played it for a few hours but I suppose the novelty of the first one went a long way.

I am still up to the second area of Builders too. The spin-offs don't scratch that itch.

The wait for dqxi and builders 2 is going to be painful, but worth it.
I got the Japanese version with my Metal Slime Japanese new2DSLL. From what little I played it's fantastic, but I'm gonna wait for the English version or a fan patch.

Hopefully someone will translate the 3DS version, it's a really cute version. Won't mind having to play the PS4/Switch versions (assuming Switch version will be based on PS4), but I'd like both. :p

I don't really have any way to play these other than iOS so I'm wondering if I should play 2 first then 3 or skip 2. I've played 1 and 8, and I was thinking of doing the whole series to be thorough but does 2 get a bad rap?

I really want Builders 2. I had a lot of fun with the original. I liked the adventure and quest-driven nature of the main campaign a lot.

I do hope they have a better free build with towns folk that give you generated quests and what not. It would also be nice if you could make them have a life in town, i.e. be the town priest, inn-keeper, king, blacksmith, etc. I was making this elaborate settlement with various districts, from farms and a mining community on the outskirts to a religious/scholarly/healing enclave, to a commercial district and rich residential area, to a military fortification, and to a castle. I got fairly far in my plans, my buildings were multi-story and had roofs too. It is just...my town-folk were uncooperative and uninteresting in the extreme and the dissonance between the vibrant way I imagined my city and the mindless reality of it took the wind out of my sails. It is not like they gave you a chapter in the adventure mode that saw a settlement to a very advanced place. I really wanted to rebuild Tantegel like they showed the builder doing in the credits.

The other thing I want is just more character archetypes and building pieces.

I liked 2. Mobile QoL helps smooth over the frustrating bits. The final boss is kind of hit-or-miss in my experience but you can just save before him.

Seriously. Outside of more Yakuza games, it's the game I'm most excited for. Co-op is going to be amazing!

Not 100% DQ related, but I've been playing a bunch of Itadaki Street since it showed up on Monday. Just finished the second stage and they have a pretty neat highlight reel that you can create after matches so I posted it on the youtubes here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dL5caMmconQ

The A.I. has been pretty rough so far, but so goes Fortune/Itadaki Street. Got super lucky on that second stage win though! We've been playing a bit of multiplayer as well and unlocking characters. It's super fun and very playable even w/ the language barrier as long as you've played Fortune Street before.

Yeah, I had no problem (aside from reading those event cards) playing the Itadaki Street demo. Really enjoyed the Final Fantasy themed minigames they have in the casino. Even unlocked the theme (twice, technically...). I'm still kinda surprised they give you the chance to play a full game in the demo, only on one board, of course, but still more than I expected. You can even play in multiplayer mode.

I finally beat DQ7 3DS recently after having it since last October. Wasn't really the length of the game itself that made it take that long, I just got caught up with other stuff and distracted and wandered away from it. It was definitely a long though lol, but at 75-80 hours I feel like it was still not nearly as long as I'd heard. I enjoyed it, it was fun and had it's charm, but I dunno, it doesn't really do enough with all its bloat to be as neat and memorable as IV or as classic as V.

I also wound up getting the 3DS version of DQVIII afterwards despite having owned the PS2 version since it first came out here since I managed to find it for a decent enough price and that I ultimately play RPGs like this a lot more if I can play them on handhelds.

The complaints about DQ7's length are a bit exaggerated. It is the longest game in the series, but it isn't longer than any of the newer Persona games, for example. People don't seem to mind their length as much.

Kosher to talk about fan translations here?

Been playing the DQM Terry's Wonderland 3D translation, it's so good. Feels just like an official translation. Hopefully we get Joker 3 Professional here one day, but if not at least fans can translate it.

The mobile version?

DQ2 was better than I expected, but it's a transition game between the tight scope of the first and the expansive blockbuster feeling of the third. Not a bad game though. Final few areas are pretty nasty.

Mobile yes. I suppose I could put a lot of effort into a fan translation version, but this is easy and portable. :)

As there's not OT, I'll put my DQXI post-game escapade stuff here. Completed the following on my commute this morning:

Glacier lake dragon: This was a bit of a fluke. I played it too risky, leading two Rou and Senya both dead/fainted. Instead being defensive and trying to heal, played mainly offensive, and with the hero as the last character alive, with his last possible hit, beat him. Wasn't skillful, but satisfying to beat the boss with a last possible attack.

Greig/Sylvian's quest: I kept on putting this off. At level 63, it was a piece of cake. I first battled them once slowly to gauged how much HP they have (pretty sure it's 3000), and then battled again hitting them up to about 2800, and then blocked until Greig could get in the zone twice. Love that Greig now has revive. That's four party members with it, all with different speeds.

I still have to properly do those trials with specific characters under a specific amount of time, and I'm on a fourth boss on the Nelson trials. I'm not sure how it works. I beat three bosses in the first trial, cleared all treasures in the second and third trial, while always dying on the fourth boss. I've gained a lot of level completing the majority of the street pass quests, so I'm hoping with a proper strategy he should be okay.

I don't want to know the answer (so please don't tell me), but I hope that 王者の剣 or whatever it's called is found in one of the above.

Lastly, I have yet to properly use accessories to combat against ailments. I feel I should craft a bunch to have them ready, but I'll probably first check if their necessary, and only craft if they are.

I realize this probably isn't the most interesting to anyone. It's just fun to have an outlet when none of your friends play Dragon Quest (or video games for the most part).

I currently have two DQ games I left unfinished, and I feel bad about it :( DQ6 and DQ Builders

DQ6 might be the only numbered game I didn't really like, the characters aren't very good, the story is too convoluted, and the class system is so clunky. I have played 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8 at this point, and 6 is definitely the worst, and the only one I wouldn't recommend.

Builders is super nice, I got addicted for a few days, then slowed down and eventually dropped it at the beginning of chapter 3. It's cool that it's episodic, so I can get back to it without much effort.

I love DQ games, but for some reason I can never finish them in one run, there's always one or two pauses.

Oh god, YES! Hands down my favorite RPG series, alongside Mother. The gameplay hook is so maliciously addictive, while also being a joy to play.

One of the few series which I had, once, finished all the mainline games in the series (until X came up, and XI after it). V remains my all-time favorite, with VI being the only one which I wouldn't heartfully recommend.

Amazing, amazing games. Such a shame they don't get the recognition they deserve in this side of the globe.

Chapter 2 is definitely a bit of a slog in terms of pacing because of all the forced waits in it. The rest of the game is much better paced and should go pretty quickly. Or not, if that's your preference. I spent an unhealthy amount of time purifying the swamp in Rimuldar.

The pacing wasn't a problem for me. I dropped because I screwed up when building the town layout for chapter 3 and was too lazy to start over, clean the field again, and rebuild everything. Also I started FFXV in the same period.

I'm looking forward to go back and start over chapter 3. The NPCs are so funny on this one, haha, the city is basically a big gay sauna, it's awesome.

Every time I see this, it hurts me. I'm assuming you played the game on DS. I'd recommend trying the SNES version of 6 sometime, because it's just so much better. Better pacing, better presentation (especially music).

I love DQ6 to death. It has some of the best vignettes in the series, honestly second only to DQ7.

6 was my favourite of the Zenithia trilogy, and in fact I think I'd say I even like it more than 8

If there's any complaint I have with it, it's maybe that it feels slightly too long

I always see this opinion going around, and I always wonder; how exactly is the SNES version so much better? Outside of graphics/presentation, difficulty and experience, isn't it essentially the same game? I didn't like the pacing in the DS version, so how do the SNES version fixes this?

I ask this because I genuinely want to understand. My thoughts on DQ6 echoes Leo's, and I think it's a shame I can't enjoy it very much. Even when I played the fan translation, my interest just wore off after a while.

I do agree that, for all its faults, DQ7 had hands down the best vignettes in the series, though. Out of DQ6, the only thing I remember is the river of blood and a poisoned dog. That's precisely why I'm wondering what could it be I'm missing.

Well every time I see you say this I want to give VI another shot. It makes me think I missed something and it got lost in the shuffle, which is not something I want to be the case, being a DQ fan.

My son's going as the hero from DQ8. I'll post a photo when the costume's done.

Awesome! My wife and him are playing through that game on 3DS (he watches her play before bedtime and she reads all the dialogue/etc.) so he'll be stoked to see VIII's hero in real life. I'll be sure to show him!

DOOOO ITTTTTTT. It's climbed up on my list quite a bit since I finally revisted/complete it. :D

Oh man. My son taught himself to read partly because he wanted to play Dragon Quest and we had eventually stopped reading the dialog because he'd keep fast-forwarding faster than we could read. That was with the PS2 version of VIII and DQ5 on the DS.

I've been lurking for awhile in the GAF thread, glad to see this made the jump here. My experience with the series is limited (finished 1/8/9, have been playing 7 off/on) but I've really enjoyed what I've played of the series and I'm looking forward to 11.

I'm wondering about you guys playing 10 online. Do you have an understanding of the Japanese language or are you just getting by with online guides/translation tools? I've been watching videos of an English-speaking YouTuber and the game looks really fun, but I know it's a hassle to set up and I'm not sure it's worth it if I don't know the language. I've struggled my way through import games before and have enjoyed myself but I don't know...should I steer clear or is it worth it?

You might want to be a bit more specific.
What were your problems with it? The pacing in the SFC version is slightly slower, you maybe it's what you're looking for.

I'll always defend DQ6 as my most favorite game in the series. Pretty much every single entry is unique, but 6 is the one I feel that hits every single note for me: focus on excellent vignettes while also having a strong overall story, great cast, incredible soundtrack, beautiful pixel art (SFC), good gameplay variety without going too overboard, ...; and the list could go on.

I always feel a bit sad when people say that 6 is the one they disliked or didn't find it remarkable, because in my case I didn't properly understand the series until I played it

I thought the game was really unfocused. I never thought it was truly clear where I was supposed to go sometimes, it felt a bit too broad without being specific, and the whole parallel worlds things didn't mesh well with me. It reminded me of Chrono Cross, another game which I feel like you're just zigzaging around with no real rhyme or reason.

I thought DQ7 took the very same ideas laid out on DQ6 and did a much better job with it, even with its drawbacks. It felt like a better version of the same base game.

I believe there's a patch that allows you to play the intro for DQ X in English. The rest of the game, however, will require an understanding of Japanese. I'm still hopeful this gets localized when they release it on Switch but I'm not holding my breath.

Sometimes I wish I had learned Japanese instead of the languages I did learn, especially with how my career plans didn't end up working out how I wanted. That's just me being bitter though and realizing that at least one of those, while really cool, isn't going to be something I find much use for outside where I intended to use it.

Something like Japanese, well, I'd have access to more classic and modern videogames, which is a hobby that I think I'll keep up.

I wish I could play DQX.

I still want to learn japanese someday, but preferably when I find myself more financially stable and can afford classes. There are just too many unlocalized games I'd like to try. Getting to experience staggered releases like DQ XI earlier would also be a pretty neat quirk.

Yeah I just sometimes wish I'd taken my hobbies more seriously as a kid as they're things that can stick with you even as your career path changes.

I need to try and keep up with my Attic post-trying (and failing)-to-make-it-somewhere in-academia but the thing is, reading Plato, Aristotle, et al. in English is probably good enough for engaging with them at a non-professional level especially because ancient Greek can be pretty tough. IDK I'll have to see where that goes. German should be easier to use (and also is just a much easier language) but I don't really see a direct application atm.

Japanese would've given me access to games I might never otherwise play unless some lovely individuals fan translate a game. It just looks like it might have been a better idea from this vantage point. But I'm just at a point where a lot of my labors look kind of fruitless atm and I'm a bit sour about it is all.
