I don't know if <750k non-Japanese copies is enough for SE. Those are shipped, not sold through, too.
For the breakdown of the Japan copies it says "sales" or "sold" not shipped, so I'd say the 700k estimate for Western sales is probably accurate. This would make it the best selling Dragon Quest in the West since Dragon Quest 1 for the NES.

Does anyone know where I can find a playthrough of DQXI in 2D mode? I've found a playlist of someone playing the 3DS version and it's fun to compare as I play through it, but I can barely find any 2D gameplay outside the opening areas.

Somehow I totally missed the announcement of a new Dragon Quest Monsters game starring Erik and Mia, reminiscent of Terry and Milayou in DQM 1 or Kiefer in Caravan Heart. Holy shit. I am so excited for this! The series kinda dropped in quality with the Joker games but the 3DS remakes of the GBC games were superb so I'm hopeful this will turn out really well. Thank goodness it's not Joker-related. Could this finally be Dragon Quest Monsters 3?! I'm there day one.

On a related note, for anyone who played Joker 3 Pro, was it a marked improvement over 3 vanilla? 3 was such a disappointment after the remake of DQM2 that I never finished it. I have a sealed copy of 3 Pro but never heard much about it and I haven't played it yet. Did it add a lot more monsters? The monster count in 3 was absolutely pitiful after Iru to Ruka.

So my husband and I are now replaying DQ8 at the same time...

He started a 3DS playthrough (his first on 3DS) and I decided to get in on the fun. I only work part-time, so I'll be playing while he's at work or doing other stuff. I'm at Port Prospect and he just met Morrie. I'm sure it won't be too long before I get past him.

Your avatar is terrifying.
I've thought that my avatar might scare people with are afraid of clowns, but......... It's important to me. I actually took the pic (the full pic has me next to him). It's from Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando and it's a Killer Klown from Outer Space. I love horror movies and bad movies and I'm a part of both hangouts here. So I thought it was a good representation of a part of me that isn't as known or seen as my DQ/JRPG and PoliEra side.

It's not just the time difference; Linkura is a much more efficient DQer, in terms of style. She's not a speedrunner but she'll cross-reference multiple guides and prioritize her achievements. The only thing that might trap her is a decent casino.
I'm using a guide this time around myself, but I tend to waste time with internalized RP-ing and irrational completionism.

Our DQ11 runs were like night and day. I wasted so much time on forging that I was constantly underleveled against bosses. She googled up a metal grinding formula and made that game her b*tch.

Since I played the JP version first, this is a paraphrased version of what happened on almost every damn boss fight during her run:
Me: "Oh, this boss is no joke; you're gonna want Sylvia and Senya and have three people heal per round when it goes into desperation mode"
*Linkura wins in two rounds, without casting a healing spell*

Speaking of efficiency and DQ VIII, is there an ideal or at least very efficient skill point build for the 3DS version? I'm planning to play through the 3DS version for the first time after not playing the PS2 version in a long time, and I never did the post game stuff so I never had to futz too much with skill points. As much as I usually like forging my own path with skill trees, this time I'd rather just get a hard list of how many points should go where so I don't have to stress about being screwed in the post-game.

I always try and get through these games with the least amount of grinding I need to. I just don't run from fights though. Usually ends up being post game that I need to grind some for, at least with the versions I've played.

I don't think there's an "ideal" one so much as a bunch of pits you can fall into. The trick -- as far as I can determine -- is to pick out the best abilities you want to shoot for, then stop exactly there, which in some cases involves maxing out a skill path and in others, not. You basically need a guide to tell you which ones are worth the effort and figure out a point budget for your builds. There's no "right" answer, but there are a whole lot of wrong ones.

So a friend and sometimes poster in here is playing DQ4 and is talking about chapter 5; it makes me think of something somewhat interesting about DQ11:

They didn't bring back the open-ended "collect the hero's armor" segment. I guess it kind of exists in Act 3--there is hero's armor and you can collect it but it is optional and not the quest. There also is the quest to get the sword still, but not the expanded armor quest so prevalent in the first two trilogies of DQ.

The reason this is interesting is because it does harken back to the hero's quest in general.

What is also kind of interesting about this stuff is that a lot of DQs become DQ1 in broadstrokes, after a certain point. Namely, they open up and become about collecting the hero's gear and killing the dark lord. DQs, which have this segment, after 1 situate that quest.

Which kind of goes to the whole DQ uses formulae but because of where it places them in the story--because of the relation of elements--different things come out.

Which again is interesting wrt DQ11:

insofar as the closest replication of this formula is in act three.

But I think DQ5 is a real paradigm case of the hero's narrative taking on new meaning and weight in the context of the overall narrative.

Where it takes on the nature of being a miracle that averts the doom that haunts your family.

Man, I'm trying out DW I+II on GBC and man what a nice port. I'm just AMAZED how well the music is converted. Sounds WAYYY better than the NES.

Gotcha, thanks for this.

All of the Game Boy Dragon Quest games are excellent. Overall it's actually my favorite platform for the series with DQ 1-3 (3 is my favorite main series game and the GBC version is my favorite) and Monsters 1 and 2 (my two favorite video games of all time, alongside La-Mulana 1).

replaying the games from the very beginning.

I was short and sweet. interesting how the world map was small but it felt right and I knew where I needed to go because of monster levels, etc. it was almost natural.

II has a crazy ass map. i didn't remember that. christ! and that sea cave made me insane. so many dead ends. btw, I was way overleveled on II, but I didn't grind?

anyway, I'm starting III soon. iOS or SFC? I remember Aeana mentioning III was better on SFC?

DQ3 mobile has no pachisi/T&T nor the gorgeous monster animations. I think it has a different soundtrack too, which sucks because DQ3 SNES' is incredible.

Hey, guys. Since the Dragon Quest Heroes games are on sale right now I want to know if you would recommend them if I loved Hyrule Warriors. I played the demo a while ago and remember very little of it but it didn't convinced me to buy the games full price, on the other hand, I've heard that they are one of the best designed Warriors games out there so maybe I just need to play more of it to enjoy them as much as Hyrule Warriors. Lastly, if I only can buy one would you say 2 is an improvement over 1 and worth getting over the other?

Have you played Dragon Quest games and enjoyed them?

If so, yes.

If not, lmao no.

I've never played a DQ game before. Are the Heroes games too heavily based on them or is it the grind way too high and unrewarding if you are not familiar with the series?

It's more like you won't recognize anyone in the games and it's not worth it if you aren't familiar with the cast at all. They aren't as good as Hyrule Warriors.

Oh, okay. Maybe they are not for me, then, since the demo didn't convert me immediately. Thanks for the reply.

They released some new cards for Dragon Quest Rivals. This is one of my favourites from the new batch so far, even though the weapons look a bit off.

rival_by_amabilis999-dcs328r.png

Kind of reminds me of plastic(I dunno, it's hard to wrap my head around it). In spite of this, I love to see more cards that have Cristo/Kiryl on it(he's one of my favourites). Not only that, I really enjoy seeing DQ characters interact with characters outside of their own game. In most DQ Crossovers, most characters are restricted to interact with characters they already know. So it's nice to see more variety in this regard.

Finished the story in DQ8. So now on to the post game stuff. Heard some of it gets pretty tough in this one.

Slightly off topic but if you become a fan later on play the 1st game instead of the sequel if you want the fan services . Many prefer the sequel but the DQ casts from past games are more involved in the plot of the 1st game.

I bought DQXI last year, but I put it down after 10 hour or so because I was playing DQVII at the same time and I wanted to focus on that one. And then all sort of things came along and finally I picked it up again recently. All the improvements of the English edition sound too good to miss and since I probably won't replay it ever, I decided to go for the best experience possible so I bought an English copy. I hope I won't regret it. I heard the framerate is improved so that's good at least. The original makes me headache sometimes.

DQIX has a pretty different setup for the main story part.

My feeling at the time was that it was a little looser because you don't have the defined party members backing up the vignettes. It's been a long time since I played the game, but, I don't remember the main plot having much of a thrust to it. Felt weird coming off of DQ8.

Well I really liked DQ3 so having the vignettes without the defined characters is fine with me.

This one definitely makes it quite clear you're an important person in the world, with it starting off showing you're a Celestrian. Compared to the Zenithian Trilogy having that sort of thing be a later game reveal, or even you being half Zenithian a point in DQ4.

Also the name Benevolessence is amusing.

There was a official video for Dragon Quest Rivals that was released a while ago. However, they left out Brey in the card that was supposed to include Solo and the Chosen Ones:

no_brey_by_amabilis999-dcstp0t.png

I do feel bad for him since he gets left out a lot(probably because he isn't too popular). To make up for it, I decided to have Brey in my team while travelling through the World Tree.
brey_by_amabilis999-dcstp9u.png

Also I noticed the staff that Cristo has in Rivals looks a lot like Brey's Staff. It kind of makes me wonder if Brey passed down his staff to Cristo. Especially since Alena can't use any spells so it's better off with Cristo. So does that mean that Brey is too old to go out adventuring or has he passed on? I think the developers just wanted to make a reference without thinking too much about it. However, it's interesting to think that there's a story behind it.

Edit: Oh yeah, they haven't made a Brey card yet. Although Brey's lack of popularity is most likely the reason why they haven't made a card of him at the moment.

So does anyone here play DQX? I had money burning in my switch account and bought the all in one pack as it was on sale.

I know it's region locked so I'm guessing mostly no one here plays it unless they are running it through a vpn on pc

There's a DQX OT. People who play it are sometimes in here. (This OT isn't that active and idk how many still lurk it).

Well, my mobile script port is released for Dragon Warrior. Really happy how it came out.

Here's some comparisons. Left is the original, right is new

^Just want to say, yeah I see the different values there. Had no idea until I made this comparison. Not sure how it happened, but it's fixed.

Ncu9y3L.png

^This might seem like cheating, but yes, the original script really was that sparse, and I wanted to show just how expanded it is. The script is now DOUBLE in size. Huge thanks to abw and his help with the technical stuff on this.

Very cool. The original translation was quite a feat all things considered, but now that cartridge size is irrelevant, it's nice to see the game get the best treatment it can get.

Seeing them like this side by side, I can certainly appreciate how much more "flavor" the newer localizations add to the game over the old.
