Knowing all the character from 4-8 was a big motivation for getting for me. Since I've never even played a musou game before.
The only other Musou Game I played beforehand was a bit of Hyrule Warriors, which I didn't really like all that much... Luckily for me, I enjoyed Heroes way more than Hyrule Warriors. The DQ characters help but I think the combat was just more satisfying.

Watching a DQ4 DS speedrun at RPG Limit Break makes me want to play the game again

Then I remember I have a save file right at the final boss and I stopped to go back and try to get rare equips and goof around in the world before I beat the game. This was like two summers ago.

Last summer it was DQ9 for the first time. Marathoned 40 hours of that game in about a week.

This summer I really feel like it should be one of 6-8 that I have never beaten. 6 I have a file where I have unlocked jobs and have a shit load of ill gotten casino tokens. 7 I have also just unlocked jobs and done a minor bit of grinding just to try a few of them out. 8 I got discouraged when I couldn't get the DLC items because of the dumb time change thing on my 3DS I never got too far.

I think what I may do with some of these games I've beaten and would totally play again is to mess around in game and deck myself out as much as possible. I could beat DQ4 whenever or I could sit and try to get Torneko to steal rare items for me forever. And doing that for a few hours here and there won't preclude me from wanting to play other games! Same with DQ5 only with monster recruiting. Same I suppose with DQ9 only with job grinding? Making my own fun out of games I've played to death is definitely an exciting proposition.

It's really bizarre that DQB2 is less than two months away and they still haven't released final western box art or pre-order bonus details.

This didn't get a lot of attention in the Gaming forum, figured I'd post it here.

Not sure if this is worth a new thread but more cast announcements

dq_morecast.jpg

The newly announced roles include: (Top row, left to right in image above):

(Bottom row, left to right):

  • Chikako Kaku as Martha (Madalena in the English version)
  • Kōichi Yamadera as Surarin (Rocket in the English version)
Has Pusan/Dr. Agon had an official design before? He looks surprisingly modern day.

I'm laughing so hard because Pusan looks like a mascot for baking soda.

Anyways his original design was base on his generic sprite but with glasses. So I guess that's why they changed it.

They made Super Mario Maker 2 into a bonafide GOTY contender with all the shit they added, not to mention more replay value than just about anything.

So naturally, Dragon Quest Builders 2 comes out 2 weeks later. Here's hoping it takes off on PS4.

Played through DQ1 SNES on my classic mini last night and today. First time playing that version. Definitely a game that lends itself to watching a twitch stream while you level grind. Got extremely lucky with money and got the Magic Armor really quickly so the rest of the game was fairly simple.

Hopeful that since Nintendo is publishing them and they are both 2019 games we get some switch gameplay for Builders 2 and DQXI on Treehouse at E3. Builders 2 I feel like is a lock because it comes out a month after the show. DQXI is the one that may not happen.

Maybe pulling off one of the greatest backlog/playthrough rescues ever. Booted up DQ7 3DS that I haven't played in about two years and figured out where I left off and where to go within about an hour or so. I know there are things in game to sort of get you back on track but booting up the game it took me a second to figure out where to go to put together shards so I was pretty far gone. 26 hours into the game so restarting would have been painful. Goal this summer is to beat VI and VII. Just got jobs in both!

Very tempted to buy Dragon Quest Heroes on PS4, since I have a voucher that mean's it would be free, and I'll never have a computer that can play the steam version.

It's a good time to be a Dragon Quest fan in the west. Been a while since I've felt like saying that. DQ is on the upswing. Here's hoping we get the upcoming Monsters game too.

I hope the Smash Announcement can help inspire more activity for the DQ Community. I'm a bit worried that it might give the series some negative attention over in the West because the Smash Fan doesn't seem too thrilled about it.

Frustration over Sugiyama is one thing. That's totally understandable. But the sheer amount of salt and hate distinct from that is just sad.

It's like no one remembers the two sword-wielding weirdos in Melee or Lucas in Brawl. I think in time his inclusion will get some people into DQ just as the other unknown characters did to an extent. It's just one of those moments that's frustrating because it is a great way to build the series some exposure (and also further serves to dismantle the timeworn "no one cares about DQ in the west" gatekeeping) and is obviously thrilling for us DQ fans but simultaneously makes some people downright spiteful.

I'm trying to avoid reading any hate because this was seriously a dream come true for me and I don't want the vitriol to be a buzzkill.

I hope see some characters as assist. I expect Alena, Yangus and Sylvando appears (one for game), which would leave a DQ3 character... maybe Ortega?

If I wasn't at work, I would have cried real tears at the reveals. Been playing this series since I was a kid and it was my #1 more wanted franchise in Smash since Sakurai revealed anyone goes with Ryu and Cloud. It was the most baffling exclusion, after Castlevania got added (which ruled, btw). So glad it was finally here. Made me really sad to watch reactions of my favorite internet personalities and see complete apathy or straight disdain for the reveal. Especially since I was happy for Banjo fans to have their day as Rare is important to Nintendo's history to despite me not ever playing the B&K games. It was smart to reveal them together because they are both very much specific to their regions of origin fandom wise.

Just sucks to see people not realize what a storied, influential, and legendary franchise Dragon Quest is in Japan and also what a huge cultural impact it has even today. It was the most deserving franchise from the get and I was happy to see it included. Glad to see people are interested in the franchise after this. Sat with a friend and played DQVIII for a few hours with him and he seemed to really dig it!

Oh, definitely. Sugiyama's ties to the series, in general, make me super uncomfortable too. The thing is that a lot of people really did like Marth and Roy back then, in spite of the fact that FE was unknown in the west. I think the mystery that surrounded those characters certainly helped. I think the issue with the "whole anime sword fighter" thing, has more to do with how Smash 4 handled the roster (especially with FE). Having more "anime sword fighters" isn't really a deal breaker for me, or even the worst thing about the current Smash roster. Personally, I think the fact that most of the female characters in Smash either look alike or are skins is more of an issue.

I picked up DQXI earlier, I still wish we got the 3DS version though, and I would have waited for the switch version, but my brother sold his and I can't afford to buy one right now.

Can someone tell me how far you need to get into DQVII 3DS to get the DLC? And can you get it all at once? I still haven't beaten the remake but I don't want the servers to go down or something and miss out on the DLC.

Did VIII 3DS have any DLC? I seriously can't remember.

I think you need to beat the game in order to download the story DLC from DQ7 from what I remember reading. Which reminds me that I still haven't beat it either! But I just never find the right time to play through it again...

I've been no lifing DQ7 pretty hard the past week or two. Now about 50 hours in and no end in sight. I'm enjoying this one because I doubt I play it again ever. Really fun and I'm enjoying many of the little vignettes and it definitely is giving me some Chrono Trigger vibes in many places with the fixing things in one time changing things big time in another time. Certain ones are very emotional and certain ones are just wacky in a fun way.

DQ8 was mine and many other newcomers first Dragon Quest, and it got them into the series. I would say that's good one to start with. DQ9 is another good entry point if you have a DS and don't mind a silent party. DQ11 is also a good intro, as it's presentation is the nicest, with it's voice acting, and pretty graphics. Not to mention it is the easiest DQ of them all, so if it's also a good "my first JRPG."

I got a New 2DS XL a few days ago, and am wanting to try again at getting into DQ8. I played several hours of it previously on a different 3DS, but had trouble really getting into it because of how grindy it felt-- it felt like I'd hit a wall, have to grind a bunch, rinse and repeat, and that's even without avoiding any battles. I can't remember where exactly it was, but I think I made it to a port town of some sort before I put it down. DQ11 for Switch looks really fun though, so I want to give this one another shot. Can anyone offer any tips or advice to make the game more enjoyably early on, or is that just how the game is?

I avoided a lot of battles in the opening hours of DQ11 and it didn't lead to much trouble (but I did end up grinding with high experience enemies later on since I like to do that). When you unlock equipment smithing (a few hours in), it's very worth taking advantage of that.

Man DQ7 is just a grinder's paradise isn't it. Sure I'll take a new party member that has no skills, no spells, and has mastered a job class that really doesn't do very much to augment their strengths or lead in to a job that I want them to have. Oh and this character is 10 levels below the level cap for the area I was previously in? Sure thing game. Just give me a couple hours to mindlessly sit and slaughter things and this character will be chipping away at a job I want them to have in no time! Sure I don't need to do this but it's fun! And I find the game to be easy enough already anyway since I've dabbled here and there with the basic job classes and have quite a few AOE attacks that are damaging that I can auto battle most random battles down easily.

I think DQ7 is probably going to be in the upper echelon of DQ games for me. DQ5 is always my favorite. DQ4 also is great. DQ3 probably a bit below those two but the rest that I've played (all but 6 and 8 at this point) are all sort of in the mix. 1 and 2 I like about the same. 9 was fun but way too easy with minimal effort required. 7 may make it into my top 3. It is really easy (or maybe taking advantage of the job system has made it easy)

Think 6 will be next (since I'm already to the point where I can swap jobs. Was going to play it first but decided to sort of rescue my progress on DQ7 and got hooked again big time in the process) and then 8. The ideal scenario is to have them all finished by the time DQXI S comes out. And then comes the question of 3D or 2D? Or maybe both...

Also as a side note: I am an avid reader of strategy guides. I don't often use them during playthroughs but I love looking at them to see artwork or how they have information organized. I've had access to the PS1 Dragon Warrior VII guide for ages but never bothered to look at it. Aside from the obvious name changes from PS1 to 3DS the guide is surprisingly decent. I wasn't expecting area maps or a quick step by step guide on what to do. Just a silly thing I decide to check on at 2am and am completely shocked by haha.

This question might have already been asked and answered, if so I apologize. I have a question about DQ XI. I started playing it, my first DQ game, and got about 15 hours in. I really enjoyed all of it except for the combat. I know this is a common complaint but it was so repetitive and slowed down the exploration and I didn't really want to grind through battles that I would win so easily. However I did enjoy seeing new monsters and was always happy to fight them the first couple times.

My question is this: Is this basic boring combat a part of all DQ games? And is it perfectly OK to turn the fights on automated?

XI is on the easy side for DQ. Usually I leave everyone but the Hero on auto in DQ games unless it's a tougher fight or I want to do something specific.

I know this is a bit late considering how far you are in the game, but on a separate new file, try out the at least these 2 Draconian setting: Stronger Monsters and No EXP from weak monsters. I know for sure I would not have enjoyed DQXI because of how easy this entry is, so I'm glad I turned on those settings at the beginning of the game. I can't just hammer on "attack" and expect to survive. Every battle, especially early on, required smart command choices and build choices and the game was more engaging because of it. You are 15 hours in, so it would definitely suck to start over. Still, It would easily suck to find the combat boring for another 40-60 hours, so I would say to give Draconian settings some consideration.

Nearly 66 hours into DQ7 and I think I'm getting close to the end. One of those games that I may never play again due to the sheer amount of content but one I'm definitely glad I experienced. As with basically every Dragon Quest game I do find things I could grind out if I really wanted to and pump even more time into the game.

DQ7 is definitely a long game, and probably one of the most I have spent time with (mostly because I talked to every NPC and I liked revisiting old places). That being said, I find the game becomes pretty manageable if you approach it as doing 1 vignette per day (or 2 even, if they are short). And I'm right there with you, I'm glad I experienced DQ7. It's one of these few games that I found I was having more and more fun non-stop as the game progressed. I know it's not a very common opinion but I really liked the pacing.

I'm actually considering replaying it sometime (probably rather soon), as I really wanted to play the 3DS remake shortly after finishing it on PS1, then when it finally arrived in Europe I played it for a while and got distracted with something else and mostly forgot about it lol.
