I was able to buy Platinum Ore and craft the Dundrasil Set well before I found Platinum Ore in the game. This was even before I did Octagonia.

I made it right after Octagonia, but it still felt kind of weird getting that set so early. What's the general consensus on being able to buy materials? This is my first time playing the game so it's hard to tell exactly how much it helps, but it feels pretty broken sometimes to be able to immediately craft every recipe I find (so far I haven't found anything I couldn't afford immediately, though a few recipes have definitely been expensive). I haven't bought any equipment at a store since I got the forge, which feels a little weird.

On the other hand I have zero interest in running around to "earn" the materials the hard way, so it's nice to cut down on the tedium.

Just dropping by to say I'm 20hrs in, 2 more characters added to the roster for a total of 7. So many feels... And I'm absolutely loving the game.

It's even deeper than that, it's bringing me back to the days I played VIII so many years ago and reminding me of how much simpler things were back then, and just how enjoyable it was to play... The VIII overworld song is only making me reminisce even more, and the sheer amount of enjoyment I'm getting out of this game is something I thought I had lost as now a grown man.

In case you are having doubts, this is a special game... I'm fairly early, but I can just tell this will go down as one of my favourite games of all time, right next to its older brother DQ VIII.

I'm pretty sure you can, yes. In general they do a really good job of making sure nothing is missable throughout the game

Yes, at the same place you got to it the first time around.

Thanks for the information! Just beat the boss. Sadly, Rab died before the final hit... so no EXP for him.

Damn the Jasper boss fight is freaking hard! Like tougher than anything in the game up to this point. I've died alot!

I'm not the only one, right?

Not sure if I was lucky but I beat him on my first try. I was also worried about being stuck with him but I was able to beat him wihout any struggles after all.

So does Erik have any use?

I just got Veronica and Serena and while Serena is obviously going to always be useful with her healing, Veronica however just completely blows ginormous holes in the enemy.

Meanwhile Erik is stabbing away doing less damage than anyone else and it looks like status effects arent particularily useful when it feels more MP and time efficient to just nuke the ever loving hell out of the enemy?

I am eyeing up these Boomerangs though...

20 hrs...?! I'm at 12 (and 2 hours of that is just the Casino) after getting R**and J***. I think I'm blowing through this game. Normal difficulty is hard enough if you aren't constantly grinding imo.

Story feels like it's finally getting started.

so did the Arboreans just assume that the Heliodoran entourage was just part of the gang or what? like, they had to go through Arborea to get there, and no one pointed them out or anything?

I'm not sure either. Though maybe having the King with them made it easy for them to let them through?

I was probably somewhere between 20 and 30 hours when I got the 6th and 7th party members. I don't even fight all that often but I talk to every NPC in town and then again after each story event cause they got more to say. And of course later after the game opens up a little bit but pretty much tells you where you need to go I went everywhere else first.

Maybe I was just unlucky playing the game on PS4, but metal slimes and babbles seem to appear more often and run less in 2D mode. Managed to kill almost as many in 40 hours as my whole run on the PS4 and that is without me going out of my way to fight them.

So does Erik have any use?
I mostly use him for stealing materials and the chance to steal rare stuff with the itemized kill pep power.

I'm taking act 2 much slower than act 1 and I have to say
That the fact its *so* non linear is both awesome and not so great for me. lol its really like hard to do some side quests because i find some other plot point in a town i was just checking for sidequests in.

I'm going a bit slower because my health is having a dip but i will slowly make my way through. also if i just got J back, how far am i?

Why are we being secretive about the 6th and 7th party members? They're in every single piece of media about the game.

He gets ridiculously powerful as you unlock more skills. He gets attacks that do massive damage to enemies he has affected with status ailments, and another ability that significantly increases his attack power for a few turns. It REALLY adds up.

I haven't played this yet but it's odd seeing so many complaints that it's way easier than even other DQ games. I'm nearing the end of DQV (PS2) and like 95% of encounters have been easily winnable by just mashing A to have everyone do normal attacks each turn and occasionally healing between battles. The few times I've had people die were usually due to cheap stuff like whack or being ambushed by multiple enemies that all cast spells with big full-party damage at once.

They are 99% talking about DQVIII which offered hard bosses at the beginning only because you were stuck with two characters forever. Also the boss during the mid-game section

Huh, just found out that I'm at some more of the Switch exclusive content

Sylvando's character arc, to be precise.

It doesn't feel out of place though, as a first-timer. Like Sylvando felt more like an MC than the MC so far lol, so picking him to control first was the perfect choice. Honestly al the joy he's bringing really seals the deal on him being the best character. So good. When he was sad my heart sank.

Just made it to Snifleheim. Two things:

1. Why do I get the feeling that the Queen is hiding something? After what happened with Vince I feel that anyone can betray me at any moment .

What if that group of knights has either Jasper, Hendrick or both within them? Now that would be something.

2. I am still in Act 1, right?

You absolutely know when you are in Act II..
It's comparable to the World of Ruin from FF6

This is one of those games where I just want to look at everything and poke into every corner. I'm late to getting into Dragon Quest -- as a kid, "Dragon Warrior" on the NES always felt unpalatable and obtuse, and that was as far as I went -- but now I'm diving into the history (playing the first one on Switch, too) and the making-ofs and listening to Tim Rogers talk about the series and such and I'm coming to find that Dragon Quest is just pure video game comfort food. And I appreciate that so much.

Also, this game is ridiculous on Switch. I'm playing with an mClassic, so maybe that helps, but it's just a beauty. Anyone else crank the brightness pretty far down, though? I found 35 to be my sweet spot -- otherwise it has a really low-contrast look, even on my calibrated TV. Lowering it also helps the obviously compressed cutscenes, which so far are the weakest part of the presentation.

Is there a list of what constitutes an "easy fight" that you get reduced xp from in that draconian setting? Like, a level cap per area?

I was level 11 after the Kingsbarrow on stronger monsters and had to grind a tiny bit to get to that, wondered if that's the norm. Because fuck me if I was expected to be lower level at the end of it, monsters take 1/3 of my health bar in one hit.

Really enjoying this so far. Only five hours in and I want to play with as little knowledge of what's ahead as possible, but I'm sure I'll pop back to ask about some of the mechanics/sidequests later on! There's been a lot that's made me smile so far. The escape from the castle just had me grin when it's one thing after another.

I was at the same level on stronger enemies and I just needed to use a tonic to pep up Hero and Erik so I could use that zone attack of Erik that makes much more damage after you use fire attacks. After that, it wasn't half bad. I find stronger enemies really make you use your items at the beggining, mainly for HP and MP recovery and can be challenging since the get go.

I found the next boss easier since you have a bigger party and it is easier to heal.

Cool, glad I'm around the right level then.

I'm sure erik learned a new pep power actually but I've not seen it. I'm guessing I need to set him to follow orders or something, I've had him on fight wisely most of the time.

Oh, you totally should set him to follow orders in stronger enemies. You will want to control every bit of the battle.

So stronger monsters hasn't been too hard. Just cleared Octagonia with little issues with my party at level 20-21. Had to restart some fights due to being focus fired or critted. Now I'm grinding since I read Jade and Rab start out at 23 so I'd like my party to be at the same level. That and I wanna craft all the new outfits I got.

Does this version do anything to address the difficulty complaints? The PC version was way too easy by default and with the stronger monsters modifier on, it was a bit too hard.

I just realised that I spend as much time in the game as in my first run last year. It just feels so good to wander around in this world, do some leveling, forging...
20h in and I just got
Veronica and Serena

I just played through that section w/harder enemies and beat it on the first attempt so my strategy is still fresh in my mind.

For preventing damage, Veronica's M.Def+ party spell was key since otherwise Zam can hurt a lot since it can crit. Buff for extra physical defense on the front characters and/or a parry skill (Hero has one for 1H swords & another one for 2H swords) is also useful. Once you get your defenses in place, it's mostly just an endurance test so the Serena + Veronica pep power is useful (gives the party regen + mp regen for a few turns). Sap from Veronica (took a few tries to get it to stick) + the Hero+Sylvando pep power that gives everyone 2 levels of Oomph allowed me to do a ton of damage (50+ damage w/regular attacks on everybody but Veronica who was using a heavy wand).

And I thought I was blowing through the game lol. I literally skip almost every battle on the field, unless it's a brand new enemy I've never fought or if it's just unavoidable. I'm not exactly speaking to every NPC either. I'm not exactly rushing but I wouldn't say I'm taking my time either.

I agree on the difficulty thing too, I've actually been wiped twice already by bosses. As long as you don't go fighting every enemy, the challenge is pretty decent.

Just suffered my first party wipe out during the boss fight at Octagonia in Act 2.
I recommend being level 18/19.
You can also respec Sylvando so he has Hustle Dance which heals the whole party. You can do this by respeccing so you unlock a skill under the Showmanship category then getting all your SP back from the litheness category so you can get to Hustle Dance.

I already kicked that boss' ass in the rematch. My team was too drained from the fight before that fight. We put up a good fight, but came up short that first time.

My mom said DQXI S music was beautiful when she heard it, so y'all who are saying it sucks should gracefully take the L.

Collected all orbs, currently at level 39. Game is so amazing, I'm always pining to get back into it.

Just realized if they had added a new Taloon/Tressa/Recette-style character to the DQ11 Switch version, then all 9 of the classes in Dragon Quest 3 would have been roughly represented by a DQ11 party member.

Did they seriously come up with an in-lore explanation for why she uses "sexy" moves...?

"Her personality changed as a result of her monster form!" ...ehh...

The quality in the monster designs, animations, and even personalizations has me super duper excited for the upcoming DQ Monsters game, assuming it's done in UE4 with this same style.

I changed the overworld music to the DQVIII version for the first time in Act 2. I like it a lot, and it kinda fits with all the changes going on but I still don't think the tone of it fits this game that well.

Nice to have more variety though.
