I'm kinda disappointed that the DQ8 music choice only affects the overworld music. Like, that's great but I guess I was expecting more, heh.

I haven't even played DQ8, I just wanted a change of pace.

When do I get some better claws? I may have to go back to spears soon with Jade. I might have all the quests done by the time I get back to Arboria at this rate. I'm such a stickler for making sure the party are all close to the same level, so haven't picked up my last party member yet in Act II. I think I'm approaching the endgame for Act II though ...

Regarding the music in act 3:
If you have the overworld music set to 8, you might want to turn it off. For me it only played the music for 3 when riding to emerald coast until I did.

Damn, this Act 3 XP grinding spot is no joke. Just nabbed 1 million XP in one battle. lol

To show how insane that is, level 99 (max level) requires 6.8 million total XP.

I'm like 30 hours in and only just did the masked fighting tournament. I've been loving all my time with the game so far.

thank you dragon quest, very cool

Edit: Ah you know what? Fuck this shit. This just isn't fun at all. Absolute grindy bullshit with crits one shotting my characters. Can't be arsed. Insultingly easy difficulty it is.

Any good guides for how to tackle Act 3? I'm guessing I'm way underleveled at 53/54 for a lot of it.

Quick question about character recruitment in act 2
where do you get Erik? I just got Jade and the game is telling me to head to Sniffelheim, though I know there is a lot to do in the south east continent.

I wouldn't worry about southeastern Erdrea right now. There's no party members to recruit, but you'll go there anyway for plot reasons, so there's no point in making two trips.

Okay now I'm sitting with 50 hours in and am roving around Act 3

Everyone is back to pre-time jump levels and skills after talking to the Watchers. How much is there left to do? Skimming a guide seems to indicate that the rest of the game is treasure hunting and a few boss fights. Besides fighting Calasmos, is there much story left? I'm a little demotivated if all that's left is running around and getting equipped for the final (and then yes I know there's a final FINAL) boss fight. I've loved the whole game so far but I'm not sure how it's supposed to stretch for another 40+ hours (if 100 hour completion times are to be believed).

The normal game has practically zero grinding to advance the story until late game and even then it's not as bad as other games. It still feels fun to play with challenging battles later on so don't feel the need to play with a lot of the Draconian modifiers to feel accomplished, especially if you're not having fun.

Ah fuck I clicked a spoiler that I shouldn't have and am very upset now

Which one?

How much did you grind?

About 25 hours of grinding. Everytime I got to a new area, I went up 5 levels, just to always be prepared. Needless to say, I've had no issues with bosses haha. This was also before I got my full time job so I had plenty of time.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

What should I focus Jade and her dad on in the character builder?

You're gonna want to revisit all the cities again if you want more quests to do. There'll usually be an npc marked on the map as a pink dot and they're gonna have a problem related to their town and usually involves characters you met throughout the game. I've done most of them and they're worth doing. Shame the game gives no indication they're out there.

How do you when you've completed an "act"? I'm 50 hours in, everyone is around level 42 and I just opened a port to meet a mermaid. How far am in terms of "acts"?
-highfive- I've been taking my sweet time too.

On normal mode nothing matters, but so far it looks like Jade with Spears despite their lower crit can do some crazy damage, but Rab is kinda jack of all trades master of none in my experience. But I haven't had them too long.

I can't stop laughing at Veronica in a cat suit. It's hilarious.

Some of these characters really look like Goku.

I wish the game got rid of those pink dots once you talk to the NPC. I always think I've missed something important or haven't talked to an NPC when I pass by the ones with a pink dot.

I sent Jade down Spears. It's got multi target skills and decent crits for Metal slimes. I used Rab as a third cast so Heavy Wands. His abilities seem more magic based so wearing wands is the way to go.

... later I respecced Jade down Allure. The attacks that scale off high Charm are legit. I got Battle speed on Very Fast anyway.

Ahhh I see. Weird that the game doesn't tell you about those. Still I'll probably take a break since I've been playing non-stop since release and there's so much more to do now it feels a little overwhelming. I can see what people mean when they say Act 3 is "post-game" but I really hope there's more story stuff to make it feel like a proper ending!

Critical hit skills like Thunder / Lightning Thrust.

Either multihits or crits are the most reliable. If you don't have access to those, sword characters can use Metal Slash and Erik can use Metalicker, which aren't as effective but usually more consistent.

Thunder thrust with Jade while just doing attacks with hero, Erik (duel wield knifes for chance to hit twice). Thunder thrust has a low hit % but if it hits, it's a one hit kill against metal slimes.

Thanks for the information!

Wait. I said red orb but it was actually the green orb.

Which was the last place that you cleared?

Oh yeah then that's a huge difference. You get the red orb when it's just you and Erik, I don't remember exactly when you get the green orb but it's much later.
What's the best way to get tokens (besides paying for them) for the Jackpot quest?

Not sure if it is the orb that Rab gives you or the one obtained from Nautica.

it's the
Nautica orb

So to answer your question I'd say probably half way through act 1.

Something neat I don't think I've seen mentioned is that when you use photo mode while undocked, it looks like it still takes the screenshot in full resolution/1080p. Haven't seen that in any other switch game as far as i know.

Still really enjoying this game, finally hit act 2 after like 40-45 hours. There's something nice about knowing i'm nowhere near the end so there isn't much pressure to go right to the next objective or anything. I did rush through the between-act side stories a bit though, they were neat but I definitely would've paced things out differently if I knew finishing the first act meant there'd be several hours of gameplay before I could get back to the casino lol

I love how far along someone is in this game is determined by if they just focused on the main story, their battle speed, and if they plan to play through Act 3 or not.

An example that just happened to me:
Friend: "I just finished up with Nautica, how far along am I?
Me: "You're just less than half way done."
Another Friend: "About a 40% through."
Third Friend: "Barely a quarter of the way done."

The casino? Heh, once I hit the jackpot, I didn't ever go back except to buy Act 2 stuff. And the Octogania sidequest.

I missed the Forge though.

What's the point of the charm and deftness stat in this game?

Some skills scale off those those stats and have a mild effect in battle.

Stuff like Jade's Pink Tornado or Sylvando's Hustle Dance base their damage / healing derived from the Charm stat. Having high enough Charm can cause enemies in battle to be mesmerized by a character and force them to not act for a few turns.

Hustle Dance's description says it heals 70HP to the entire party, but in actuality with enough charm it can heal upwards of 180HP to the entire party and half the cost of Multiheal making it one of the best full party healing spells in the game.

Sylvando's That's Amore becomes a very powerful single target damage ability. Hitting upwards to 300HP worth of damage. Pink Pirouette is slightly weaker but it hits an enemy group.

Jade's Pink Typhoon and Pink Tornado is similar to Pink Pirouette except Tornado it hits the entire enemy party instead of one group. Also does comparable damage to That's Amore, roughly 240 Damage to the entire enemy party, it can probably scale even higher if you use high Charm gear.

Deftness helps effects Erik's steal success chance and It determines how often you strike first in battle, land critical hits, and successfully flee from battle.

How hard is Super Strong Enemies in Draconian Quest? I've played about 5 hrs and the game kinda seems like a breeze but I don't want to be grinding my ass off to beat a boss.

It's a straight 20% boost to an enemies stats across the board. (i.e an enemy that has 1000 HP, now has 1200 HP instead, and 20 STR is now 24, etc)

It does add some challenge but keep in mind the game does not balance encounters to accommodate the change. The original Japanese release of DQXI didn't have it as one of the Draconian modifiers for example and it wasn't included until the Western release.

I expanded Serena's skill board

she is not much better

either I keep her as a good healer, or I turn her into a better Veronica, but at the expense of her healing. this game handles roles weirdly. someone ends up stepping on someone else's toes and making someone useless

Got to the fortress of fear and the first boss just crushed me. Guess I should go grind/get some better gear.

this game is starting to suffer from the problem I have with rpgs with large cast members: as the party becomes stronger, roles get less and less defined. attack power characters get outclassed by characters who has gimmicks that deal significantly more damage^1, designated healers become less effective thanks to characters that can heal and do something else^2, some characters with singular roles don't have any real reason to be in my party due to lack of flexibility^3

1. Erik can do really good damage thanks to his skills. if I unlock the move that make the offhand do as much damage as the main hand, he'll easily be the best attacker
2. Sylvando, Rab, and Serena are a weird trio given their healing assortment
3. I struggle to find a purpose for Jade

A lot of this isn't really a problem in Stronger Monsters due to the need to constantly swap party members. Erik does by far the most damage but requires the most setup. Sylvando is the best support character overall but can't revive, and his MP isn't as large as Rab/Serena. Serena > Rab as far as healing goes due to access to also having defensive buffs, but Rab is also great in a pinch and if you need to heal Serena or if you want to do good magic damage without having to rely on Veronica's bad defense.

Jade's best for damage when you can't find the time to setup Erik, and Hero's usually busy doing a bit of everything.

Yeah, I mostly replaced Jade with Erik at the end of the game because of how good his endgame skills are, but he was almost useless in the post-game superboss where I never got a chance to buff him, so Jade ended up doing most of the damage. Honestly I was playing on normal difficulty and that final fight was one of the harder fights I've done in a JRPG, and I was max level with endgame gear. Kudos to anyone who does it on stronger monsters

What is Erik's setup? Divide -> Critical Claim? I only have him specced for stealing, he's still wearing the costume hat and robber gloves that up stealing percent.

... I wonder if boosting Deftness is a more effective stealing tactic.

Fucking hell, the last Wheel of Harma trial is a pain in the ass. I've maxed out everyone's levels except for Serena's but I guess I need more powerful weapons and accessories in order to bypass these HP Sponges.
