I wonder how downgraded the visuals and fidelity will feel to PS4. Ideal scenario:

  • Decent port/approximation of PS4 version, while also including the option to play and switch to the sprite based retro visuals whenever.
  • New extras/content/surprises.
  • Actual orchestrated OST in the West.
  • Composer ejected from DQ for being a bad human.
I don't see any of those things happening except the second one.

Since it seems like they're retooling the graphics for the S version, I think there won't be much of a feeling of "downgradedness" and more of "difference". Maybe they'll retool the engine to make the game look cel-shaded - which can look good even on a lower-powered system.
  • Actual orchestrated OST in the West.
  • Composer ejected from DQ for being a bad human.

Oh god, yes. Sugiyama won't be gone though, he'll probably be involved with DQ until he retires or dies.

You know, with all the fuss surrounding XI's soundtrack, I'm actually a little optimistic that Nintendo (let's face it, SE is going to make them publish it in the West), might've seen all that and will at least find it worthwhile to include the orchestra soundtrack. Let's not forget there's a huge difference between a portable port on 3DS and a console port that people will be playing at home on TV.

Yeah, I remember way back when VIII was announced , I was posting on MM Cafe back then, and one of the first translated interviews I read was Sugiyama commenting on the concerns of his age and happily declaring how he's going to keep doing DQ until he dies. He could very well have been literal.

Do hope they include the 3DS version alongside the PS4 one.
After waiting like two years it feels like the smartest thing to do giving Japanese gamers the option to rebuy it to play a very different version if they only bought one or in the west a way to bring in the 3DS version which wouldn't come over otherwise.

Cant wait to hear about it. Cant believe this was one of the first games announced for the NX and here we are ending year two of the Switch and still havent seen a single screenshot.

How much y'all wanna bet this panel will come and go without a single mention of DQXIS coming to the west. It'll come but we'll be left in the dust for weeks now.

Chances are EXTREMELY good it has nothing to do with the west at all. Still possible something is announced but highley unlikely at something like this.

My requirement for rpgs for me to play them are

Must have optional super boss/bosses
Must have above average story
Needs to be challenging, want to die some
Being rewarded well for exploring

Does dragon quest 11 have some or all of this?
Having just completed it absolutely, main game isn't terribly difficult but there's a substantial postgame with a challenge. Lots of bosses and the story is very good.

Special guest is Sakurai. BELIEVE
That would be interesting. But even if that Erdrick leak was true I dunno if they'd announce all the DLC characters so soon, lol. They still gotta finish Piranha and Joker first!

At any rate, I'd just like to finally, finally seem some screens of this phantom Switch port. Or, if I were to get greedy, maybe a video?

As long as you choose "Super strong monsters" under Draconian Mode when creating a new save file this game will tick every one of those requirements you ask for. I do however recommend you to turn off said hard mode on act 3. The game just gets too fucking tough by then and normal mode catches up and gets very challenging by then anyway.

1-Surely it has, lots of side content.
2-Quite the opposite, the story is nothing special, it's the blandest JRPG story in a long time.
3-If you use Draconian modifiers it should be (I didn't).
4-The exploration is really limited (corridor areas and small fields) but the towns are filled with (bad) sidequests and secrets. Nothing special but it works.

I'm banking on the Switch to give us orchestral tracks and JP voice, otherwise it's the PC.

It makes no sense that Nintendo would be able to get orchestrated soundtrack on DQ11 when Square Enix can't. Nintendo only would do regional publishing and that part of music needs Sugiyama approval since the game uses his compositions.

of course they won't mention the Western version. This will be 100% Japan focused stream.

It's funny, I made that post before the leak/rumor. I think it was even before the Joker reveal. I mean even then I thought, "Sure, REALISTICALLY, it's probably just a voice actor. But, I WANT TO BELIEVE!"

On one hand, I'm thinking the same as you. It seems too soon. On the other hand, the Joker reveal was just an announcement with no gameplay footage, they could very well do the same here.

Also, like you, I'm just looking forward to seeing how the Switch version runs and any kind of special features they might add.

I think Sugiyama has this weird mentality where brand new releases can't have it but re-releases, ports and remakes can because he's had his chance to showcase his concerts. Sort of a movie theater release > home video type of thinking.

I was only talking about IF the Switch version has the orchestra soundtrack added. We don't know yet.

I put over 80 hours into the casino on PS4, having that be portable will lead me to never leave the damn place on Switch

Expecting extra content, not too concerned about the release date because I'm still doing the post game on ps4 but I know I'm gonna double dip on switch eventually.

I still can't believe we're going to see this this week-end.
I somehow expect a stage event when hori says he's quiting square Enix and that dragon quest XI S is canceled.

Iirc the 3DS versions of DQ 7 and 8 actually had the orchestral soundtrack, yet it was removed for the western release due to lincensing issues with that homophobic arse that Sugiyama is.

So even if the japanese release would include it, big chance that the west will get the short end again with the MIDI.

homophobic or not, he's the reason DQ has memorable music.

Don't worry, let him be homophobic. His disease won't spread. He's old, times are different now. Stop wasting your hate on an old person who has some talent. Direct your hate towards something that will impact the future. Not on someone who might die tomorrow.

I'm excited. Having just played World of FF on Switch, I'm optimistic as to what DQXI on Switch could look like. I know they're very different games but still.

He's old, yeah. But you know what he also is? Influental and wealthy, two attributes he actively puts to work in order to spread his disgusting views. Dude is connected, supports right-wing politicians, actively tries to enforce his believes on the public by that.

So no, i won't stop directing my aversion towards him, but don't worry, i have plenty of aversion for all other public figures who share similar beliefs.

not of whatever new content is gonna be put in the game. unless Nintendo steps in like they did with Octopath Traveler, simultaneous launch is unrealistic
I don't think it'll be simultaneous, but if it's another year long wait then Square is purposely sabotaging this franchise in the West; there'd be no other explanation for that level of incompetence.

Runs fine on the GPD win 2, so it technically could've released day and date with the other versions.

the PC and western PS4 versions are built on a different build of UE4 (one that had Switch support officially added). I suspect whatever they were doing for the western build was the starting point for the Switch version but will have more content and additional stuff like voice acting

I don't even think the Switch version was supposed to be announced at the time let nor was it actually in development yet. It was an off the cuff remark.

The thing about people begging and pleading for the orchestral tracks is that it's the composition that sucks and is super lazy this time around, so it isn't any better with real instrumentation.
