Additions are pretty cool.

At this point though I've already bought and played this game multiple times and there's more stuff in the September->November stretch I want to check out than I expected, so I'll put this on hold and get it at some undetermined point in the future.

It's not the time it was released though. It's years after that and now my copy of DQ11 is inferior. It doesn't make me entitled to the additions but jesus christ i should at least be considered to get them.

I don't understand this. They've made plenty of adjustments to the PS versions of Final Fantasy games. Should they update the originals with these quality of life changes? Hell, we're in an industry where "new version" of the same game get re-released as a completely different game.

Either way, none of this keeps the original version from being played and beaten. The quality game is still there.

also something to consider:

when the game was localized for ps4, it got several additions over the japanese version. these additions were never given as an update to japanese players because the localized version was on a newer version of unreal engine 4. meaning you can't just update the game, you have to put out an update bigger than the size of the game on your HDD, basically replacing the game entirely.
the same is true here since this version is on a newer version of UE4 than the PS4 version, meaning they'd have to completely replace the game with a new build.

Have we any news on whether the other versions will get this stuff? There's zero goddamn reason to keep this exclusive.

I've never purposefully double dipped and I won't be starting now.

Nothing yet, but if Nintendo is publishing the title, like they have done on all past DQ games on 3DS, I expect a timed exclusivity for 2-3 years or more and then SE can release it to everybody. Guess we'll wait and see what SE news comes out in 2-3 month's time.

Question, this looks fantastic but I have never really played any RPG's really (Only RPGs I have really ever put time into is stuff like South Park TSoT, Pokemon and the Mario and Luigi games)

Compared to the RPGs I have played, how is the battle system in DQ? Is it quite fast and not overwhelming with options?

This is going to be my first Dragon Quest and I'm really excited for it. I've been devouring RPGs on Switch and this upgrade seems legit as hell. Might even jump in on day 1, but Link's Awakening and Daemon X Machina might pull me away

If you are interested in the game too, beware though. I just visited the DQXI entry in US eshop and it's stated only English is supported, which means US and Japan version are separate entries. Which means the physical copy that comes with the console will likely be Japanese text only.

Thanks.

I'll have to consider it a sunk cost as part of the price. Maybe can flip it on ebay.

NO! WHAT AM I SAYING?? I WILL NOT BUY THIS. WILLPOWER!

Dragon Quest battling is very simple. If you played Pokemon it's not too far off from that. This version of DQ11 allows you to speed up the battles

The amount of additions almost make me think they have realised what a huge mistake it was to take the Nintendo fanbase for granted.

Can't wait for them to repeat the mistake with DQXII.

You'll just be smart enough to resist the urge to get the "Notice Me, Sony-senpai" edition and wait for the "Please Be Excited Apology Tour" edition with all the cool extras.

Hell, I skipped the original release because of no orchestrated sound, and not only was my patience rewarded with passable music, but I will reward Square Enix in kind for helping make it happen. All I do is win win win win

Well, you never know for sure what will happen later down the road. Nothing is ruled out 100% that this content can come to other platforms as well (although i kinda doubt it).

I can understand the desire to want the extra content, but when i buy a game, i can only look at the value proposition that the game offers right there and then. That should be enough to make the purchase worth it or not.

What did they take for granted? The Switch version was announced very early on, and they made an exclusive 3DS version. Did they first plan on simply porting the PS4/PC version to the Switch without any addtions?

I've never played a Dragon Quest game but this looks so gorgeous. Truly pleasing on the eye. As a fan of big worlds, mythology and such like this should really appeal to me. I'm watching the Treehouse stream and the characters are going into inns, casinos, churches and I'm absorbed by it all.

Except... I just don't do turn-based battles. I don't enjoy characters standing still being assaulted, waiting for their time to attack. I don't find it engaging at all. No disrespect whatsoever to the genre or the fans, it's completely on me. I wish I could run around swinging a sword, ala Link.

It's a credit to the game that it had me so captivated despite knowing it's not for me.

Give it a try, the turn-based battles in this game is more simillar to FFXIII (in the good way) than classic turn-based ones. Also if you like DragonBall (no z or s) you will like the comedy and story of this game.

They prioritised making a big console(read: PS4) game which meant they released a 3DS game months after its successor launched. The Switch version was an afterthought, enough so that it's coming 2 years late in Japan.

If DQXI had taken off the way they wanted the Switch wouldn't be getting all these additions.

Actually, you have the option of moving around whilst in battle by changing the battle camera settings from "Classic" to "Free-Form Fighting".

Furigana added what ?
At that point it's a whole new game.

Wow... Astral chain and just a month later this. It's gonna be nuts.
Fine, guess I'm in the minority on this one. Guess I'll go play my AMAZING version of DQ11 with a truck load of features missing. Thanks SE.
You're welcome.

Personally I think at least some of the QoL changes should have come over. Orchestral track, expanded content, 2D version are things that would require either a DLC/Expansion or wouldn't come over, depending on who paid for them. (SE or Nintendo).

I got the game on PS4, PC, and now debating Switch. Help.

true. here's how i think it all went down:

DQ has always gone for what's the most popular platform in japan at the time. NES to SNES to PS1 to PS2 to DS (i'm ignoring 10 here). they started with having PS4 in mind for 11, because they, like many other japanese publishers, heavily banked on PS4 being a much much bigger platform there than it ended up being. some time into the development they probably realized they're going to go from the 4 million that 9 did on the DS to ~1 million on PS4. that's a massive drop, specially considering the game had a budget and scope several times larger than the previous titles. so they decided to make a 3DS version as well (and adding 2D mode to make it a more attractive option, specially for those who were already sold on the ps4 version as well). even with that addition it failed to reach the numbers of past games so they had to put all this effort into a newer version as well to make it sell as much as possible. there are all the consequences of picking the wrong platform from the beginning, but in hindsight it doesn't really matter that much since people got a very good game out of it.

So Nintendo just released a video of Dragon Quest XI S gameplay footage they showed off during Nintendo Treehouse Live E3 2019. And I'm not going to lie, I'm hyped.
nice, performance is looking solid.

Only thing I wish was in the PS4 version was Japanese voice acting. What's charming at first quickly turns obnoxious after so many hours.

Great game though, one of my favorite DQ. Enjoy if it's your first go, Qol improvements make it a better game now.

I did get the Platinum trophy on PS4 in this game. But i will for sure buy it again for Switch, i loved the game. But i don't think i ever got all the accolades, and never the full bestiary. Sooo i think the Switch version will be a fitting place to try and do that :D

Dragon Quest games have never had voice acting in Japan. The first release didn't as well to keep up with tradition. Many japanese fans prefer to play the game that way. They just added them to this version as a value added proposition.

Nope.

The game didnt have VA in japan because they wanted to work on the story right up until release.
If you do VA, you have to start recording the lines way before release, preventing last minute changes to the dialogue.
The western release got them because by then the story was set in stone, so they didnt have that problem.

The only thing that limited how much effort went into the Switch version was the plattforms success and Nintendos support. Both more or less forced SEs hand for future DQ titles.

Now that i read through some the new additions, just wow.

Especially forging everywhere.
It felt like i spent about 1/4 of my game zooming to that camp in the jungle just to forge.

Yeah, thats true. Maybe its my english, but i read this as they didnt think that the Nintendo fans would care, so i was wondering what they wouldnt care about, and what the huge mistake was in regards to this. Reading your post again, i guess you mean that they didnt think that much about the sales a Switch version could bring in?

The developement of DQXI started in 2013 however, and at that point, the Switch likely wasnt even known at all, so it had to be added later on. That they even announced DQXI for Switch that early on shows that they were commited (to some degree at least) very early on to the platform. And since they made a 3DS version too, i dont think they took the Nintendo fans for granted.

I think the Switch version would have gotten these additions regardless. Maybe not every single little tidbit, but at least the main things. If they're going to release the same game that much later at full price, they must offer something compelling to maximize sales (and they've done a great job at that :)). Getting backup from Nintendo could also be an insentive to make more changes.

The development of DQXI did start in 2013, at a time where the switch wasnt a known platform, so they couldnt really bet on the wrong platform in that regards. Their best bet at the time was either 3DS exclusive or both PS4 and 3DS, and they went with the latter. They did also announce the Switch version very early on, so they were commited to some degree even at that stage. Even if they did delay the whole game and started with the Switch version as the base version, its not sure that it would end up selling more than what the PS4 and the 3DS version did.

But i agree that it doesnt really matter much at this point in time. Sqare Enix has done a great job by making the Switch version, and making it compelling even for double dippers, which is also a great business decision :)

DQXI started out as a PS4 game. The 3DS version came about during development and didn't really take off until the 2D/3D thing was suggested to Horii.

i'm saying the smart thing would have been to make a 3DS game.
Ah ok, like that, i understand.

Yeah, if they had done that (3DS exclusive), the Switch version wouldnt likely have been made in this fashion, indeed.

Sure, i know :) He said "even with that addition it failed to reach the numbers of past games", and had to make the Switch version to make up for that, and then said that they bet on the wrong platform. So i thought he ment that picking the wrong platform was referring to not having the Switch version ready as the same day as the PS4 and 3DS version.

I somewhat hate Square for how they have done PS4 stuff lately in regards to post launch updates but I need to play this game in 2D mode, so they are gonna get a double dip out of me. I'll shake my fist while buying it but what can ya do.

I hope the rumored new switch model is coming this summer.

I think it's easy to say prioritizing PS4 was a clear mistake in hindsight, but I do think it's not difficult to rationalize how they could've come to that decision at the time. Sony was pushing hard for JP content and even in 2013 they'd secured big hitters like FFXV and MH5, Horii wanted to make an HD console game building off DQVIII, I think there was a general sentiment in the industry around then that PS4 would do alot better in Japan than has ended up being the case.
