Just did the caravan quest taking the body of the snake to the city. The city is huge! Lots of cool armour to buy.

The combat really is fantastic in this game, it feels so good.

Yup, I can see myself sinking many hours into this.

After playing this for 10 mins on PS3 and never touching it again, I've decided to give it another a go and I am proud to say my former self is a complete idiot for not giving it the time it deserves. What a great game.

Anyway I have a few questions about pawns:

When pawns say "I've learned knowledge about this quest" or "I know the way", how do I get this information out of them? Pawns tell me to follow them and stop walking so it's a bit confusing.

My main pawn is having a whinge about being in combat, is that bad?

Also, should I use my friend's OP pawns or just hire the levelled pawns? Should I try and level them up or just sub them out for new ones when I reach a higher level?

How do I approach buying weapons? Do shopkeepers have different stuff? Should I buy and upgrade or just keep buying new stuff when I see it?

Cheers!

I think when a pawn learns what to do on a quest it's mainly for the benefit of anyone who hires them in the future and goes on that same quest. Your pawn will have already done it, so they can give helpful advice.

If pawns you hire are way above you in level, you won't get much experience. Try to stick to using ones that are near your level.

Shops get new stock sometimes. I think it's determined by story progression? So check back after some main line quests are done. Although, maybe it's determined by player level though and not story progression.

Thanks for the reply. I have been using friend OP pawns and they keep telling me they know stuff but I can't get anything out of them lol.

I will sub them out anyway. Should I be sticking to the pawns I choose or just sub them out once they are under levelled?

I'm always using new pawns when I level up. I've never used a friend's pawn, so I'm not sure if that works any different.

Feel free to sub pawns out as you feel like it, since hired pawns don't level, even friend's pawns. The only pawn that levels is your own when they're with you.

If your pawn is complaining about being battle, check their inclinations. Google inclinations too see what each one does, generally Nexus and Guardian are not good for pawns. Inclinations are important to look at when hiring new pawns, you don't want a healer who's not healing or buffing and is busy just fighting, for example.

You can also change your pawns inclinations by buying elixers from the NPC that's standing by the Rift Stone in the Encampment with Rift Crystals.

The game shows you two inclinations for your pawn: Primary and Secondary, but there's also a hidden tertiary Inclination that trades position with the secondary based on your actions.

Once you have a good idea of what you want your three Inclinations to be, by two elixers for each, so that you can push those inclinations down.

This is how it works: rather than setting the Primary first and then working down, you set the tertiary by drinking the elixers for it, then the secondary, and finally the Primary ( 3>2>1).

The knowledge chair at the Inn sets your Secondary and tertiary Inclinations by reinforcing them, use it regularly to keep the inclinations in place since they are fluid and dependant on your actions.

Don't use the D-pad commands as they can mess with your Inclinations. Picking up loot or stuff will change the Inclination for example.

Stores inventory update on story progression, there's a quest later for idols to give to one of the store keepers to increase their inventory.

Inclinations I've not heard of at all
(And it may explain why my Mage pawn doesn't heal anyone , other Mages have done). I'll have a look as I am heading back to the Maximilian now. I am on the Cypher quest where I meant and met the dude on the hill.

This game! Loving it!

Here's some more questions, if you please!

Do I need to keep the First Journal and Wyrm Hunt Licence on me at all times?

I keep finding Ancient Scrolls. What are they for?

I can only seem to fast travel between the starting area and Gran Soren. I can't seem to see how to unlock other areas.

Making a desperate plea here. I'm doing my second playthrough of the game, this time on the Switch and with Dark Arisen, and forgot to make a copy of the Wyrmking Ring. Playing as a Sorcerer so would have been awfully nice to have it, anyone with a spare ring to gift?

Could you tell us where the encampment is where I can give the NPC elixir? Is it in Gran Soren?

I've tried changing the inclination using the chair and in the profile of my pawn, it didn't change.

It's set to Guardian no matter what I choose. But.. I only have two options when sitting in the chair, Medicant or Mitigator.

If Guardian is your Primary, then sitting in the chair won't change it. The chair boosts the rating of the Secondary and Tertiary inclinations. To remove Guardian as your Primary, I recommend buying 2/3 elixers of the one you want, then 2 for the secondary and tertiary.

The Encampment is the right after Cassardis, where you created your pawn, fought your first Cyclops and Hydra. That place.

Yup, you can only change your own pawn's inclination, not hired ones. That's why assist from skills, you should also look at their inclinations. You don't want a pawn that only attacks enemies of only you're being directly attacked.

Thanks for all of that, very helpful!
Should my main pawn be Guardian? It sounded logical to me that they're my guardian, but maybe it doesn't work that way?

When I get my next pawns, I'll look out for the Inclanation. It's not something I even noticed, I was just looking to spread the skill set i.e. Mage

So do I need to just hold the Elixirs, or give them to my Pawn? And should they 'use' them, or hold them? This is quite a confusing system and doesn't seem to be mentioned in-game at all. They seem expensive too, I don't have anywhere near enough to buy them.

Guardian inclinations are okay for Melee Arises, but according to the wiki, they seem to only act when the Arisen is attacked with a melee attack.

Here's the Wiki, it explains it fully: https://dragonsdogma.fandom.com/wiki/Pawn_Inclination

Elixirs are something that can be consumed, keeping it in inventory does nothing. Keep it in yours and just select and use, your pawn will automatically receive the benefits.

As for Rift Crystals, you get them when people hire your pawns and send them back and you can do From a Different Sky quests to earn some, you'll find them on the second Notice Board in the Pawn Guild in Gran Cassardis.

I need to jump back in the game, if you post your friend code, I'll send you a request and hire your pawn and get you some crystals that way.

I picked this game up yesterday because I needed something to really dive into, and man it's got me hooked. There's definitely jank and weird rough edges, but what works is just so cool. The combat feels fantastic, and I LOVE the vocation system. I've always thought multiclass systems in RPGs were really neat, but they usually require pre-planning and min-maxing to be worthwhile. I like that you can seemingly do whatever you want and end up okay. The game really does capture a sense of D&D-esque adventuring, too. As bland and slightly tedious as the open world can be, I love being able to wander into the wilderness and get your face kicked in by a manticore.

edit: Also although the world's not super interesting so far, I dig the vague Mediterranean vibe. There's a Harryhausen Jason and the Argonauts feel to a lot of the monsters.

Finally started this game a few days ago even though I bought it on day 1. It seems really cool so far, combat seems deep and the enemies are great. Loved the design of the Hydra.

I'm currently escorting Reynard to wherever the hell he wants to go and I'm starting to think that I may be underleveled for this quest... That one chimera took me like 15 minutes to take down and I had to reload twice already. Or maybe I just suck horribly?

Anyway, gonna add some of you on that spreadsheet for pawns!

Escort quests are optional but they do give you exp and gold and sometimes take you to areas you're eventually going to visit anyway, so might as well get paid for doing so is my motto.

I like the tough fights, especially early on, figuring out a strategy to get the win is most satisfying. What level are you? Chimeras pack a punch at early levels.

And what class are you and your pawn?

If you want a tip:
Travel to the place, drop a portcrystal. Start the escort mission, warp, done. Sure, it seems cheating but they put that into the game. It's not cheating, it's a mechanic.

And a port next to a healing spring, take a bunch of empty bottles, fill and go. Spring water will heal the entire group and I've heard the escortee, as well. Then take your crew out and kill those murderers dead.

'Help Reynard the ridiculous rest in peace!'

This is a brilliant idea to make those escort quests less annoying. Even the one required by the story was pretty lame, so I wasn't looking forward to having to do more for some extra gold and XP, but this is perfect.

I did one and the guy died because if those assholes near the witch wood. It's like 30 of them. I reloaded then, walked there myself, dropped the port. I would let them bunch up and do a few to the beach, then moved the port to the next common escort location. The beach, the shadow fort, the ladies castle, etc.

Ah those port crystals. So they stay in place for as long as need them? I wondered if they expired or vanished or something.

The first escort mission you get in the main city you visit near the start (that has the Pawn guild place) as you off on a Escort distance MILES away. Hilariously for a while, I didn't realise I had activated the mission and then I realised another party member following me around. 😂😂😂

Port crystals stay put where you placed them, you can get three really easily:
The Everfall, The Shadow Fort and Hillfigure Knoll.

1. I place one by the Healing Spring just before Hillfigure Knoll.

2. At The Shadow Fort, since you get many quests in that region.

3. The Greatwall Encampment

4. I usually carry the fourth around with me to use as a quick stop.

I've got one. I think it was in the place where you do the first quest with Maximilian (translating the slate). I don't know the names of places yet, but I'll look out for those places you mentioned. Thanks!

My pawn has started outshining my character in a way that's kind of funny. On my main character I've been changing classes a lot to kinda explore different mechanics and see what I like, while my pawn I started as a mage and turned into a sorcerer at level 10, which means he's getting into all the crazy high-level spells while I'm still learning how to hit people good with my mace. I had a chimera fight where I got all hyped up, started climbing around and hitting the tail, and then he cast meteor storm and flattened the chimera, with me on it, in a couple of shots. I fell off the now-dead chimera and down a hill.

Also, I like the open world gameplay a lot more than most people seem to (I play a lot of P&P RPGs and it really reminds me of that), but man is there a weird conflict between the open exploration and the linear quest design. Twice now I've come across something in the world and then been told later by a quest to go "discover" something I already found. One of those even had a cutscene trigger, which I had no context for because I wasn't doing the quest it was supposed to be connected to.

Yeah, the quest designs are the weakest parts of the game. The story, or the lore at least, is really interesting and gets better towards the end of the game. I had read that there were apparently some things happening during development that made them cut content out and it shows.

You got the one from Hillfigure Knoll. The other one is a place you'd have already been to, so I'll tell you: it's in the Everfall, beneath the Pawns Guild, where you fought your first ogre and the purple tentacles came out of the ground. It's right at the bottom, sitting in the middle of the circle. You'll just encounter the normal enemies.

Also, if you picked up the Eternal Ferrystone from your storage, you can just teleport out rather than running back up to save time.

Hmm just been down again to the bottom of the Pawn Guild area, nothing new. Maybe it's in my storage, I'll check.

EDIT. Phew! In storage :)

Right, I'll go check the healing spring out, see what that's all about.

I am not really sure what to tackle next, whether to do quests from Maximilian, or some Escort quests (although they seem a long distance away so might be tough, even with the trick people said about).

I did it somehow! It took me a few tries and it was really tough toward the end because the two pawns I had hired died so it was just me, my main pawn and useless Reynard 😄 God I was SO happy when I finally reached that place! This game really makes you fear the wilderness and you really appreciate a safe haven when you reach one (at least early on).

As for my class, my game is set to German because my Switch is (I hate this trend of auto-language setting btw) so I don't know the exact English terminology, but my MC is a swordfighter while my MP has a bow + daggers. I tried to hire mages for the other 2 slots so my party would be somewhat balanced.

I'll definitely keep this in mind if I decide to take on another escort quest. Also, I came across one of those healing springs and it never crossed my mind that I could fill my bottles with it, that's good to know! Thanks.

Goddamn I just did my first Griffon fight. What an amazing battle. Jumping on the thing as it swoops by and then desperately trying to break its wings as you careen through the air is incredibly cool. The encounter design of the large monsters in this game is just fantastic.

Update: My sorcerer cast maelstrom on my fire great cannon, which made a tornado that had fireballs shooting out of it, which was extremely metal.

I've tried a few times to kill the Griffon but at level 23 I am doing too little damage right now. Ace fight though!

Not sure if you did it or not but go around, to the right of the lake, the long way. Otherwise, you'll find an enemy that's hard if you haven't hit the higher levels.

If you look at a map, aim for the camp and keep going around to the right.

Thanks. I am not sure if I am going in the right direction or not. I found a river after a fork in the road (river is right direction). Left took me up a hill to a ruined castle with a shut gate. I got inside and opened the gate from the other side. Beyond the castle was an area with blue flying... ghosts? I turned around and am heading back to the river, that feels like the way the quarry.

I don't think I've seen lake hardship at all, but I did finding the Healing Spring. But actually, is there another healing spring? On the map you put on, Shadow Fort is north of the spring, but in game it's south west.

First things first: you're going the wrong for the Shadow Fort. You need to go to the Quarry, there'll be a quest waiting there, which you can complete as you progressive forwards. Once you're out into the open area, stick as much as possible to the right, hugging against the boundary, like it's mentioned there's... Something there that is rather cool and dangerous and you don't want Maximilian dead. Once you've reached the Fort, it's a good place to place to drop a Port Crystal.

I'm being deliberately vague.

There castle you found and the area beyond you can explore at your leisure. Just make sure all your male team members are wearing female dresses when you explore that castle, that don't like makes.

There are multiple healing springs. The location based on the healing Spring won't mean much if you aren't familiar with the area. So just go too the quarry. Make sure to save often and regularly.

Thanks! I thought I was heading towards the quarry! I am slowly gettig closer to it on the map, but maybe not!

I went past the first healing spring (near the first Maximillian quest where you get the slate translated) and I found that river. Is that the wrong way to the quarry?

I got half way through that castle ruin and then I was attacked. I killed them all :(

I've come across a little area called Miners Hut.

Edit 2: fuck me, at Miners Hut you can get straight to Gran Soren. Lol!

Oh well, it was a nice little trek anyways. So I guess I go the other way at Miners Hut, and that should take me to the quarry.

I am in the quarry now. I met an NPC called Anon who's asked me to clear the mine for him. I am doing that now. The ogres are tough!

Done the quest clearing the enemies out of there. 3 ogres and undead, goblins. Anon has set up shop. Looks like the other end of the mine is not far from Shadow Fort. I'll continue tomorrow!

I need to get around to finishing that quest. I killed the first ogre and then got scared and ran away, but that was like 10 levels ago so it'd probably be easier now. I'm close to maxing out my Mystic Knight rank, and I think I'm gonna switch to Magick Archer next because they sound pretty cool. Just need to raise some money to buy new daggers first.

That's a question I have. I've pretty much maxed my ranks (the red badges you get) for Strider now. Should I switch? Will I stop leveling up if I don't? What's the benefit of switching?

I'm a noob, but the impression I get is it's basically up to you. Everything I've heard is that it's really hard to ruin your character even if you switch classes constantly, so it's really up to whatever you want to play as. You keep leveling up and gaining discipline when you max your ranks, but it means that you have access to all the class's skills.

Plus with switching you get augments you can carry between all your classes, so even if you love a class and want to stick with it, it's probably still worth playing the field a bit to get those passive abilities.

But for me at least the main benefit of switching is just the way it shakes up the gameplay and allows you to experience a bunch of different, cool playstyles without having to start over like you do in most RPGs.

There is a spring on the lower left of the fort. Like, South West of the fort.

To the recent question: switch vocations to experience a different one of you are new to the game. Magic Archer is my jam because of strider/bow and magic all in one. Plus some crazy bow magic. You can even do some support with it.

But mainly because i saw some videos and it looks crazy.

Now I'm doing my 2nd run thru with sorcerer to level up magic for my end game magic archer.

Ahh, so If you level up a sorcerer, when you switch to Magic archer it will have more powerful magic over switching from say, a Strider?

How long is this game? Main campaign alone and the time it takes to complete most side stuff? Seeing radically different times when I search for it online.

Just got to the Shadow Fort and the dude has asked me to go through a hole to open the gate from the other side.

On the way to the Fort, I stuck to the right and didn't see anything special like what you hinted at. Unless it's about to happen inside the fort?

I went a little past the fort and... there's a dragon with a LOT of health! 😂

I just beat the Quest for taking over Shadow Fort. Ser Robert survived so all good!

I placed a Port Crystal there so may well just complete the Escort quest for Shadow Fort for some quick XP.

Then.. maybe change class and do some side stuff. I'll revist Shadow Fort, maybe some quests will be there too.
