I'd set a reminder but got sidetracked (my kid decided 16:58 GMT was the exact time to jam her fingers in a drawer as I was closing it), and only got my application in now. So I'm guessing I'm screwed if they are in any way constrained by queue-order.

Yeah, on MM's FAQ, it says they will try to get as many people in as they can, but you're not guaranteed a spot.

I thought this was supposed to be an open beta?

They've always done betas under a certain EU site/client they use I think, so that's probably why it's different.
