During WW2 a big park in Tokyo Japan killed all their animals for fear of a bomb letting the animals loose?

Yeah that is alot of what the fuck going on in WW2 japan that they never own up for.
Not to excuse this, but there were far worse atrocities carried out by the Japanese (among others -- no major force came out of WW2 with anywhere close to clean hands).

Yeah given the spectrum of atrocities Imperial Japan committed I don't think they were gonna give a shit about zoo animals.
I don't believe one could click on great deal of the topics posted in Etcetera and come away in a still good mood.
The Japanese were horrible to those they didn't like (basically everybody that wasn't them). Here it is different, presumably people cared about the animals in the zoo, and if they had to be put down, somebody would have the courage to do it mercifully.
100,000 people (mostly civilians) died in the bombing of Tokyo, and over a million people lost their homes.
The death of a relatively small amount of animals, while tragic, pales in comparison to the scale of other events that occurred near that time.
they had no sympathy for the people they butchered and experimented on.. why would they care for animals?

During the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian war, Parisians raided the city's Zoo of live stock to eat. Elephant, Camel, Kangaroo, Ostrich, Wolf and other exotic animal were suddenly available in markets despite a city wide food ration taking place.
In one of my Japanese history classes in university, I learned that the Japanese military gave live grenades to people living in Okinawa, and indoctrinated them into thinking that if the American army came, they would meet a fate worse than death so they should use the grenades or whatever other means they had to kill themselves. Of course, the American troops landed nearby, so all the people ran into a cave and most, if not all of them used the grenades. But some grenades were duds, so some of them lived and had to deal with survivor's guilt for the rest of their lives. Parents ended up killing their children to save them from the Americans.But the American troops that arrived actually didn't do anything to them besides give some aid. Such a fucked up situation.

Not just by history but also in their schools. A lot of students do not even understand the things their country did.
Wow, I too remember hearing about this in uni but had forgotten the details.
This story however isn't one of them thankfully. It's quite a well known event in Japan and not with the usual half glass full guise, but full on this was a sad thing that happened.

WW2 Japan was insanely evil. I understand the risk to have animals wondering in the streets but this decision was really awful..
Detained their own citizens in a camp, betrayed Vietnam and (in a continuation from WWI) China so hard that they turned communist

They held a memorial service for the animals, so yes, they cared. They didn't care about sub-human foreigners, though.
I was correcting the last line. It wasn't just American forces, it was allied forces.

I guess the difference is that the animals in Paris were eaten because the people were starving to death.
By contrast the Japanese military had other ways of making up for food shortages.

I think part of the military style for japan during those times was is to live off the land or something along those lines.
What would be the point of that? History lessons try to stick to the grand scale of things in that limited timeframe.

Roosevelt stole the jobs, livelihoods, homes, and freedoms of American citizens of Japanese ancestry and imprisoned them in internment camps. And then there's Truman's use of atomic weapons on the civilian of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

All should be required learning in schools, Japanese too.
Whitewashing history helps no one but the perpetrators.
It doesn't always follow this logic with facist regimes. For example while we know how Nazis treated other humans at the same time Nazi Germany had one the most advanced animal welfare laws in the world at the time (some parts of those laws are still use in modern Germany). People were even put to concentration camps for breaking animal welfare laws.
