Those poor elephants

In August 1943, the administrator of Tokyo, Shigeo Ōdachi, ordered that all "wild and dangerous animals" at the zoo be killed, claiming that bombs could hit the zoo and escaping wild animals would wreak havoc in the streets of Tokyo. Requests by the staff at the zoo for a reprieve, or to evacuate the animals elsewhere, were refused. The animals were executed primarily by poisoning, strangulation or by simply placing the animals on starvation diets. A memorial service was held for the animals in September 1943 (while two of the elephants were still starving) and a permanent memorial (built anew in 1975) can be found in the Ueno Zoo.

Also wtf

Shortly after the March 1945 bombings of Tokyo, the Japanese placed U.S. Army Air Force navigator and bombardier Ray "Hap" Halloran on display naked in a Ueno Zoo tiger cage so civilians could walk in front of the cage and view the B-29 prisoner.

Not to excuse this, but there were far worse atrocities carried out by the Japanese (among others -- no major force came out of WW2 with anywhere close to clean hands).

Yeesh. Why not just shoot the poor things rather than a slow torture of starvation?

Saving the bullets for shooting at American forces.

Yeah given the spectrum of atrocities Imperial Japan committed I don't think they were gonna give a shit about zoo animals.
The Japanese were horrible to those they didn't like (basically everybody that wasn't them). Here it is different, presumably people cared about the animals in the zoo, and if they had to be put down, somebody would have the courage to do it mercifully.

They killed all the animals in a couple of dutch zoo's as well but at least they gave them a quick death.

I hate that so much of Japans asshattery gets ignored by history.
100,000 people (mostly civilians) died in the bombing of Tokyo, and over a million people lost their homes.

The death of a relatively small amount of animals, while tragic, pales in comparison to the scale of other events that occurred near that time.

I've been to that zoo, and felt bad for the elephants confined to incredibly cramped spaces. I never knew the history at that zoo was so tainted.

During the siege of Paris in the Franco-Prussian war, Parisians raided the city's Zoo of live stock to eat. Elephant, Camel, Kangaroo, Ostrich, Wolf and other exotic animal were suddenly available in markets despite a city wide food ration taking place.

In one of my Japanese history classes in university, I learned that the Japanese military gave live grenades to people living in Okinawa, and indoctrinated them into thinking that if the American army came, they would meet a fate worse than death so they should use the grenades or whatever other means they had to kill themselves. Of course, the American troops landed nearby, so all the people ran into a cave and most, if not all of them used the grenades. But some grenades were duds, so some of them lived and had to deal with survivor's guilt for the rest of their lives. Parents ended up killing their children to save them from the Americans. But the American troops that arrived actually didn't do anything to them besides give some aid. Such a fucked up situation.

Here's an article on it: https://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/20/...icides-and-japans-army-burying-the-truth.html

This ranks low on Japan's crimes. It atleast makes some sort of sense even if it's fucked up.

Read up on unit 731 if you wanna hate humanity, oh and they got immunity from the US because they wanted their junk science which is arguably worse than Von Braun.

I guess the difference is that the animals in Paris were eaten because the people were starving to death.

By contrast the Japanese military had other ways of making up for food shortages.

Starvation? That's fucking appalling.

First unit 731 and now this shit, why is none of this taught in any history lesson I ever remeber taking?
What would be the point of that? History lessons try to stick to the grand scale of things in that limited timeframe.
If you want to know more than that there is a shitload of material covering most of human history since ancient Sumer.

Thousand of years of suffering-porn.

The UK killed millions of civilians in India (which was not a significant theater of war) through a campaign of forced starvation at gunpoint. Churchill was a monster.

Roosevelt stole the jobs, livelihoods, homes, and freedoms of American citizens of Japanese ancestry and imprisoned them in internment camps. And then there's Truman's use of atomic weapons on the civilian of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Stalin... where to begin? Probably the worst mass murderer in history.

All should be required learning in schools, Japanese too.

Whitewashing history helps no one but the perpetrators.

they had no sympathy for the people they butchered and experimented on.. why would they care for animals?

It doesn't always follow this logic with facist regimes. For example while we know how Nazis treated other humans at the same time Nazi Germany had one the most advanced animal welfare laws in the world at the time (some parts of those laws are still use in modern Germany). People were even put to concentration camps for breaking animal welfare laws.

Same thing happened at Belfast Zoo.
In 1941, many of the animals in the zoo were killed because of public safety fears during the Belfast Blitz. The Ministry of Public Security ordered that 33 zoo animals were to be killed in case they escaped from the zoo during the air raids. This included a hyena, six wolves, a puma, a tiger, a black bear, two polar bears and a lynx.

I would say their fears are not entirely unfounded.
