Update: As to why Canada is a banned word, see this post (thanks bishoptl).
Update #2: The ESA/E3 has now password protected the JS file. Should any reporter etc. have questions about it, send me a DM here or on Twitter. As of 21:32 CET no longer password protected.
Update #3: ESA has now published a new version of the JS file (main.1ec6a76f.chunk.js) which effectively has this list of banned words removed. No mention of Canada or any of the sexual slurs.
On the E3 Digital Venue domain, https://e3expo-portal.com, there is a JavaScript file (main.6fd9bebd.chunk.js) containing a list of banned words from the messaging functionality of the virtual booths (and probably other areas where users can submit messages). Most of these words are offensive/profane and of a sexual nature (which I won't link directly to the file). Other words aren't very offensive although may be used offensively in certain contexts. And some words I can't really find a good reason for being included in the list. Some politically oriented words are included in the list, most of them oriented towards far-right politics. Below is a selection of these words (presented as in the JS file):
Religion
alah, allah, azazel, christ, god, jew, jew!, jewed, jewish, lucifer, koran, nimrod, omfg, omg, qu'ran, quran, surah
Geography, nationality
canada, canadian
Political
black president, democratic socialism, right side broadcast, trump train
???
toejam, women rapping
Now, this is tied to E3 2021 Code of Conduct which has the following:
To note is that this JS file is work in progress. It currently contains a lot of placeholder data and is subject to change before E3 2021 goes live June 7 (Pre-E3 Media Days). The question here is: Is the list of banned words fully compliant with the E3 2021 Code of Conduct? Certain words are understandable (such as the terms related to judaism, to combat antisemitism), but one may wonder if perhaps the list ought to include many more words (as well as removing some) to make E3 fully compliant with the Code of Conduct. For example, including more religious scriptures (if such are to be banned at all) and removing "Canada" and "Canadian" (national origin). A good effort by ESA in my opinion, but some work probably remains. We'll see how the list updates in the coming week.
