A list of some of the details divulged in the discussion about The Last of Us 2.

    • New traversal and prone move-sets.
    • Combat has increased emphasis on tension, interactivity and realism.
    • Enemy AI references each other by name, and constantly communicates with each other.
    • Two different timelines explored in TLOU2.
    • New dodge/evade mechanic is a core part of combat and melee.
    • You now have a jump button.
    • Far more creative and emergent moments in combat thanks to big increase in breadth of options.
    • Improved stealth mechanics, including crawl, prone, squeezing into tighter gaps, underneath vehicles etc.
    • Expanded infected enemies and whole new classes.
    • You're not automatically fully hidden in grass. Extent of your visibility depends on height & density of foliage.
    • Much more verticality in combat scenarios now. She needs more routes and ways to engage.
    • Survival aspects are still a focus.
    • Different ammo types (eg explosive arrows) now. Each ammo type fulfills a particular strategy niche.
    • Animation system is completely overhauled so everything is even more realistic and transitions are seamless.
    • Wide linear combat environments are being expanded to be even larger and broader.
    • AI system massively improved for added realism.
    • No more auto AI telepathic awareness of you once spotted. They whistle to and actually communicate with each other.
    • Referred to as systemic check-ins of AI information. They pass information to each other more realistically to let new groups and enemies know of the unfolding situation or of your position.
    • Enemy awareness and ability to seek player out improved.
    • You can now craft different ammo and arrow types.
    • The Church scene is set 4 years after the events of TLOU in Jackson, the gameplay demo is set 5 years after.
    • Seraphite(sp?) is a religious cultish group, but they will not be black and white. Motivations explored.
    • They use more advanced facial camera capture and mo-cap now, more advanced than they had with Uncharted 4.
    • Lots of new facial animation tech. More nuances of the face, creases, folds, build up of skin etc.
    • Eyeball tech also re-worked, now includes internal refractions, reflections and so on.
    • Joel is somewhere out there in Jackson....

  2. Is Jackson the camp from the first game? Been a while since I played it.

The dodge stuff surprised me. I assumed that to be something the game did for you. That adds a lot more to what melee combat can be in this.

If it were closer to release it'd probably be my number 1 most anticipated title. Great, great new details here.

  9. Interesting... I really wonder why they're hiding Joel. It doesn't sound like he's AWOL, the guy in the demo mentions something about Joel giving him a hard time. Maybe he's far more bitter or the relationship with Joel and Ellie is in turmoil.

So if this takes four years after TLOU, that would make Ellie 18 in part II. Did we have an estimate of how old Joel was in TLOU?

    Alright.

I was wondering how they could improve upon TLOU, and especially since GOW just came out and did the companion journey better.

Everything listed there sounds fucking great.

  13. Around 50 I'd say?

He was in his late 40's in TLOU.

So early 50's or dead in TLOU2.

  17. Everything I hear about this game is Gustavo's music to my ears.

I cannot wait. Please don't kill off Joel.

They also talked that they're expanding on the infected and there will be new classes in the game.

Sounds lovely. Adding the ability to prone is definitely a small yet huge update to the movement system.

Incredibly impressive. I did notice they were calling out each other by name and saying “so and so is dead” and that goes a long way towards driving home the point that these are human beings. They have friends, relationships, etc. It’s more believable and even if they are shitty people there’s a level of guilt there.

And look, I really like the new Tomb Raider games and I know people are tired of hearing comparison, so I’m sorry. When I see Lara killing random people, and one guy turns around to find a guy he was just talking to dead and they just casually go into “look for the player” mode it feels so damn hollow. Without even getting into all of the small details of animation, transition between encounter modes and whatnot just the believability is so low in Tomb Raider.

Thanks for the summary. Awesome info! I wonder if we'll ever murder some random fucker after learning his/her name in combat and then find some lore in a collectable paper with notes on that person and feel guilty, lol.

  24. Mark my words...as I've said before: we will play as Ellie's mother who will then be killed by a "boss" a la Souls. And this boss will be revealed as Joel.

And everyone thought the gameplay was scripted oh the non believers. This is how you evolve a game. Looked insane tense those fights.

I figured Joel early 50s since he had Sarah "at a young age" figure he was 18 she was 14ish.

    Still no ETA eh...

I may be replaying this again soon....

So I am guessing the other timeline will be Ellie's mother? I was hoping for a young Joel timeline, go full-Godfather and have Joel's descent into ruthlessness (and those "nightmare years" Tommy talked about) parallel Ellie's path ala Vito ad Michael Corleone, but this could be cool too.

They also said it’s “not close to being released” so expect 2020 at the earliest / maybe a PS5 launch title

I loved Uncharted 4's gameplay, verticality, and scale.

This is basically a marriage of the best parts of TLOU and Uncharted 4 and more, which is everything I wanted.

Yea, I'm thinking Ellie's mother. But you never know, it could also be something completely different like the main villain's timeline or something like that. Neil did say the religious cult would be explored in a deeper way, and that they will have their own grounded motivations for doing the stuff they do.

Also seems they've changed her face from the initial reveal?
