Jade Raymond did an interview with Game Informer where she talked about Motive's four games. Some of this is older information, but I'm putting it all here for people who might have missed it.

There's more about the games and how Motive works at the various links.

Star Wars:
  • Being helmed by Motive Vancouver with assistance from Motive Montreal.
  • Motive Vancouver was originally co-developing the game with Visceral back when Visceral was leading it.
  • Motive Vancouver has staff comes from two backgrounds. The first background is that there are a bunch of people from Black Box who made games like NFS, Skate, an unnamed open world game that was presumably Gunhead, and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (as "PopCap Seattle"). The second is that they hired a ton of staff who worked on Prototype/Hulk Ultimate Destruction (Radical Entertainment) and Sleeping Dogs (United Front Games), since both of those studios imploded, but had a bunch of open world staff who needed new jobs.
  • Amy Hennig's game had 3 terabytes worth of high end Star Wars art assets that they intend to reuse. They had stated this previously.
  • Jade Raymond also notes that they really love the characters Amy Hennig came up with, and intend to keep them in the new game. Amy Hennig was noting that a lot of the work she did on Uncharted 4 pre-reboot was reused, and she was hoping the same would happen here, and it seems that will at least be the case for the cast.
  • In case the above didn't make it clear, the game is now open world instead of linear.
  • They seem pretty unsure on when this game is actually coming out, so slot it in as a next-gen title for now, and be surprised if it ships earlier.
New IP:
  • This is helmed by Motive Montreal, and was the main reason EA opened the studio in the first place, since they wanted into the action-adventure genre.
  • This is also the title Jade Raymond is most directly heading up.
  • The goal of the game is to reinvent action adventure games for the future.
  • Jade Raymond really wants the team to put in gameplay elements beyond "shoot" and "kill". As one example, she wants the game to have a huge "explore" gameplay component. She goes so far as to say she wants Motive's identity to be about "relentless discovery".
  • The game is a sci-fi title.
  • In another recent interview, she noted that the game will be a positive statement about humanity, so you shouldn't be imagining a gritty Blade Runner world here.
  • Jade Raymond notes the game will be a "dynamic, living, breathing world" that keeps evolving and changing over time through what sounds like a live service element. She contrasts this with how (historically speaking) Assassin's Creed is a game where you go through the story content and then it's immediately on to the next annual title without the last one really evolving. [Nirolak's Note: Ubisoft made it sound like Assassin's Creed might be headed in this direction as well next-gen recently.]
  • The game will be very social, and something you can play with your friends. She feels that there are a lot of games out there that are a great social pastime for having a great time with your friends, but very few in the action-adventure genre, and feels there's a big opening there.
  • The game is still very early overall, but they're hoping to be able to start talking about it around this time next year (presumably E3 2019).
Plants vs. Zombies:
  • This is being made by Motive Vancouver. I think everyone who was part of PopCap Seattle (aka Black Box) is part of Motive Vancouver now.
  • This seems to be the next Garden Warfare title (or whatever they decide to call the third Plants vs. Zombies shooter game) as far as I can tell. Judging by job postings, it has a campaign this time.
  • There wasn't too much else on this beyond that, but uh, I think we can all imagine what this looks like based on the previous two games.
Game #4:
  • This is being made at Motive Montreal.
  • It's unclear if this is a new or existing IP.
  • The project was pitched by three employees who worked on it in their free time and then it got greenlit by EA. A lot of people have joined on to work on it since.
  • This sounds like a somewhat smaller project compared to their New IP.
  • Motive is very happy with the project, and it's encouraged them to make sure there are more opportunities for staff at any level to get together and pitch project ideas. You'll note that BioWare has made some similar statements recently with how they would like to make Hellbade sized experimental projects based on ideas various developers are passionate about, so this seems to be spreading across EA.

Thanks for the summary, Nirolak.

I've been interested in Motive's New IP since it was first announce almost 4 years ago. I think at this point it's fairly clear that it's going to be a next gen game.

I'm actually interested in that open world action adventure game. Sounds cool.

Also, i like the idea of smaller projects and seeing that Motive is in fact DOING one makes me hopeful for BioWare to do that too.

Yes, our last update was that EA was estimating it would be out by March 2022.

So other than the art assets and characters, it seems like Motive is completely starting over on Hennig's Star Wars game. Since it's going to be open world and likely to incorporate some kind of live service component, I agree with the next gen theory. Given the state of the Fallen Order reveal at E3, I don't think Respawn's game is coming this gen either. EA really dropped the ball on the Star Wars license, I doubt Disney is pleased with their output.

Motive's new IP sounds interesting. I'm kind of getting Fable 1 Molyneux-hype vibes from it. Maybe next gen the tech will be there to make that a reality.

Oh man I'm liking all of this

Glad to see another Garden Warfare is coming, though I wish it was hitting this year. With how bland CoD and BF look this year, I need that series now more than ever.

First one is a masterpiece - true 9/10 multiplayer experience.

They did WAY too much with the second, and it lost the charm and ingenuity of the first with efforts to force unneeded content.

Hope they return to the game's roots with the third.

OR
A paltry 2 AAA Star Wars console games this entire gen (3 if Battlefront 3 happens), and only in one series and genre.

EA baby what is you doing?

This Motive thing hasn't released a single game and they already have multiple subsidiaries?

Awesome summary, Nirolak!

I've been wondering for awhile about Motive's set-up (I guess a lot of EA Vancouver got reassigned to the new Motive team) and what projects they're exactly working on. Outside of Battlefront 2's campaign, information about the studio has been a bit nebulous. I'm glad they were so open about their four projects. I like having a clearer picture of what's coming out of these major devs.

Oh wow. For some reason I was under the impression it was before 2020 or something. Maybe that was something they previously said?

Still find it weird that EA has never taken this segment seriously over the past decade.

Given how they shudder as many studios as they do, EA does need this for the sake of the hundreds if not thousands of people working in these.

Lol EA doesn't 'need this' and I'm sure they'll manage. Also, studios close. It happens. Do you show the same support for every company on this planet that occasionally make the decision to close a plant/factory/etc.? Does it really affect you that deeply?

...I understand folks are passionate about games and all but it's still a business

I have sympathy for people when they lose their jobs, I've had it happen to me and it's the a terrible hopeless feeling. You might not feel that people working at EA or any other company that closes deserves sympathy but I do.

Yeah the Garden Warfare series is highly underrated. My son and I have had a blast with them, especially GW2 that had split screen multiplayer. Online is also a blast.

Glad they are making GW3, or at least it sounds like GW3. Hopefully they keep all the class types from GW2. Wouldn't be the same with my Unicorn Chomper!

Things may have changed, but the original intent of Jade's project was for EA to get into the AAA action/adventure space. Think games like Assassin's Creed, Shadow of War, GTA, etc.

Though that was years ago now so who knows.

Too bad they completely abandoned the AAA action/adventure space they were doing extremely well in last gen... so many amazing, abandoned/neglected IPs

Wait....is this the new sci-fi IP that's still very early in development?

If so, wow. Excluding PvZ, I can easily see all three games being next gen titles.

From the sound of it the new IP they've been working on for a while won't interest me, no surprise there. Interested in seeing the presumably smaller game and still open to the star wars game, despite being open world now

Would it be safe to say that EA's long term goal with smaller projects like this and EA Originals is to basically help prop up Origin Access Premier?

Yes, but they're also fishing for new ideas that might work in bigger games in the future, or turn out to breakouts themselves.

The fact that you think they really care is funny, the minute they get the chance to bring back the under tactics they will, be damn the many talented studios they've buried. Also its not anyone's fault that developer choose to work for EA and their owned studios.

Knowing their history, they could work anyone else in the industry.

We should get SP Star Wars game next holiday season called Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn.

I'm very skeptical of this coming out next year based on how it was revealed this E3. They had literally nothing to show, not even a teaser trailer, title flash, nada. Just Vince awkwardly dropping the title and saying it will have lightsabers.

Yeah, it feels a heck of a lot more like a 2020 title to me. We'll see, I guess.

Respawn is capable dev team so i trust them to deliver. They delivered amazing campaign for Titanfall 2 in 2 years and that was primarily MP game. SW project is in the works for haow long 2 years already and it is SP oriented.

Since EA has stated that Motive's new IP is expected to release by March 2022 (Q4 2021/Q1 2022 release date), is it safe to assume that their Star Wars game will be a Q4 2020 title? I'm guessing EA plans to give the Battlefront series a rest, given that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is also planned for a Holiday 2019 release.

I think we can predict what will come out of these based on EA track record since this gen started.

Star Wars will disappoint/underwhelming, new IP will just be another Destiny tryout, PvZ will release with minimal fanfare become niche quicker than 1&2 and Game #4 will get cancelled.

Don't care for those Garden Warfare games one bit, but would love to see another original PvZ but without all of the mtx that ruined the 2nd. Fat chance of that ever happening with this EA though.
