Each passing year shows more and more that PS Home was WAY ahead of it's time

With more and more gaming leaning into cross promotion and guest spots. Plus with streaming being popular, just shows PS Home was already doing what the industry was progressing to.

the minigames were fun. I especially liked the kinda wipeout racing one and the City tycoon type of minigame, I even spend real money on that last one haha

Remind me what home was again? I got a PS3 just before it shut down

Wasn't it just a virtual space you could hang out in?

fortnite showed that for these experiences to really persist they need to be platform agnostic, like how fortnite is on everything and vrchat accepts headsets from multiple manufacturers.

I wish there was a way to play on a private server, it was so fun. Tons of lost media, too, I remember how the first time I heard about Danganronpa was on a promotional area they made there, and yet I've made a few searches and could not find anything about it.

I used to just "hang out" in this and listen to music and ambience - was a really nice bit of background sound.

I definitely wonder with the rise of "slice of life games" if Home would have been better suited to a release these days.

What has streaming got to do with PS Home?

If PS Home launched today I still don't think it would be a success. Maybe it would have gained some traction during lockdowns but nothing long-term.

Yeah a virtual space where every player had a home then could meet up around a town and do stupid but fun things like have a dance party with their avatars or play mini games or watch trailers lol

It was like if Sims had a free starter pack that included multiplayer.

If astro bot was built into ps5s with some of home's online hub functionality and decorative personal rooms I think it would be a hit. Like some kind of mainichi issho/animal crossing thing.

I mean, I think I tried it once and thought it was similar to second life, then I never used it again

It could probably work better now, but most people fire up a console to get in a game, so other than maybe having some live State of Play events where you can watch stuff with other avatars, I personally can't really see the appeal

Maybe I'm just too old though

I think if Sony returned to HOME it could be more about private lobbies you could set up with your friends as a social space, and making your own apartments.

For the delicious MTX stuff Sony could apply a discount for PS+ subscribers, and keep it free to play, with lots of other free items that can be unlock via progressing in small challenges that show off what you can do in a space.

The idea of a large free for all like it was originally will be a nightmare nowadays, and there were lots of moderation challenges that may not be worth their time, but safe spaces for different groups would be a welcome feature.

I dont understand the premise of this thread. In what way was it ahead of its time? Am I being dense but I dont think the OP laid out their argument very well. What has streaming got to do with anything in relation to Home?

I remember enjoying home at times . I watched EVO and visited PS exhibits for E3 . They even had a cool world cup center . I also remember the performance was atrocious! I kinda miss it

If Home was as successful as people claimed at the time, why isn’t it still around in some form?
Tied to PS3. Likely the people who were pushing it were let go.

Every generation some things change even when they don't make sense. PS4 had the communities section which is gone on the PS5.

Sony likely didn't want to try to "port" it to PS4. That was a big transition as in everything from that generation had to be scrapped. PS4 software going forward has continuity in mind.

HOME on PS5 would be insane. Instant loading, bigger instances, mtx up the ass, maybe VR added. But Sony has moved on from that curiosity phase. Even the MP style games of PS3 are long gone.

I remember freaking the fuck out when I got into the beta. I think I was 15 or 16.

It really was something special, especially back then.

I loved it and I miss it. I take solace in spiritual successors like Avakin (on mobiles) and Tower Unite (on Steam). Would love to see a new take it on it accompanying the PSVR2 launch.

It was clunky and segmented as shit, I can imagine a HUGE percentage of people that tried Home out dropped it in the first 10 minutes. The PS3 was just not the place for this, and the team working on it seemingly didn't have the technical skills to pull off something of that scale.

Now I think it could definitely work, but more "party" focused instead of public. Hell just make a VR Chat for parties on PS5 with little activities like Home had.
