Theoretically digital versions of games could be released weeks before the physical version could be placed on shelves. Would this be something we should want and would there be any reason publishers wouldn't?

I don't think it'd be an option for major releases, retailers would try their hardest to stop it.

Publishers would care because 1.They create elaborate, carefully timed, marketing campaigns and 2. retailers like Gamestop, etc would be pissed and possibly stop carrying their releases to retaliate.

I think some games already unlock a few days early.

Doesn't Microsoft do it with their Ultimate Editions?

Unlocking a few weeks seems crazy since most games come with Day 1 patches.

Retail stores would be pissed, probably threaten to stop console sales to make console makers enforce launch time parity.

I'd be going digital with certain releases for sure if this became a thing without an upcharge.

This is already done with some movies.

Yeah but you don't need a Disney blu-ray player to watch a Disney movie. If retailers stopped selling let's say ps4s because Sony let digital eat all the day one sales it could cause huge problems.

If anything it could give publishers an excuse to make the physical release more "exclusive" by including figurines, artbooks, soundtracks etc. .

Now we are talking delayed physical releases that cost more then digital also. I am sure publishers would love to do digital only as there is less overhead and risk since you never need to produce a physical copy. But retail will always be the hurdle here, atleast for consoles since they need a presence in physical stores.
