Any and all GOTY lists are opinions of the person or organization creating the list. Calling a list "trash" or "garbage" or a "joke list" with no solid explanation or reasoning is low effort and drive-by. This does not contribute any intelligent discussion around these video games. Given that there has been plenty of warnings on this subject, we will be banning anyone who makes these sorts of posts from this point forward. If you want to critique a person or organization's game list, please provide solid reasoning why you think their opinion is wrong. You have been warned.

Edge #315 is out now to subscribers. This issue contains their annual game awards including their top 10 of the year. No rleal surprises in their top 10 list IMO but I was surprised to not see Horizon in there given the score they gave it originally.

The main feature is on Wattam and the rise of indie games and how the new wave of indies can make gaming a better place after recent lootbox scandals and aggressive monetisation.

That's a fucking good list. Nioh is the third best Souls game and I believe people will be surprised by how well it'll do on Era's list.

I really need to play Nex Machina, Housemarque deserved so much more especially after Alienation was criminally overlooked.

Incoming 40 page thread re: Horizon Zero Awards, P5 and Nier snub.

ARMS is surprising, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart were much more enjoyable for me.

Big up Nioh. Probably would have stuck Hellblade and Horizon in instead of Nex Machine and Arms but pretty good list overall.

Splatoon 2 being a runner up in audio design is well deserved those new Squid Sisters songs and the Off the Hook songs are insanely good for voice filter/gibberish songs. And the general OST is amazing and unique.

Same for Nier, awesome unique ost all around too.

Neat for Arms to win something!
Amazig list imo.

That's another solid top 10 and well in line with their reviews throughout the year. Kinda feel like we've come full circle what with their 10 for BoTW being the first of many and now they're one of the last major publications to give it their GOTY.

Really nice awards and good list!
Their GOTY yearly issue is always a good one to read too.

I dont remember what Edge gave Persona 5 but being left off of so many top 10 lists from other publications as well I am pretty shocked to say the least.

Man, what a year for Nintendo. Top two games, three out of top 5, best hardware, best publisher, best studio. Plus sales records.

BOTW has a lackluster soundtrack, poor voice acting. Splatoon 2 trumps it in audio and shouldve been above. Also no hellblade for audio? no prey either? wtf.

Best audio design for Zelda is laughable as it is one of the widely criticised points of the game.

Ok, this one is bullshit

No Hellblade? BOTW wins with it's terrible voice acting/mixing?

The JP voice acting is good, not sure what you're about ;)
More seriously, this award encapsulates too many things (OST, mixing, audio design, etc). In terms of audio design, Zelda absolutely deserved the win. The rest (OST, mixing, etc) is a lot more debatable though.

For those bemoaning Zelda taking the Audio award, here's their abridged commentary:

Some bemoaned lack of traditional soundtrack but that's not suitable for a 200+ hour game.
In any case, SFX palette is masterful and is given room to breathe, from the soft whistle of the wind to the gentle clank of items in links backpack...

Nintendo EPD are a truly talented team. When they assisted in Mario Golf World Tour we got one if the best golfing games ever. Hope they work more often on sports games.

Nier losing to BOTW in audio design is the odd ball but overall a good list.
Yakuza 0 deserves the recognition!

Hahaha that seems a little silly. I know 'If Nintendo didn't do it, nobody would love it!' is eye-rolling, but how is that special? Almost every game out there has ambient sounds like that.

Lmao, they state that as if there was a written law that says long games are only allowed to have certain kinds of soundtracks. Bullshit. Skyrim for example did just fine with a very nice mix of traditional, nice sounding, epic tracks mixed with more ambient stuff. And it is widely considered to be an excellent soundtrack that fits very well into the game.

It has some nice sounding SFX, but other games had that as well ... on top of having great soundtracks.

While being a neat game, ARMS being higher than Horizon Zero Dawn and Cuphead sure is an interesting choice.

Happy for Nex Machina and Divinity to get some recognition though.
