I imagine this will apply more toward The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy than Tomb Raider given it's not clear the new Tomb Raider has multiplayer or the types of things you would have in-game stores for.

MONETIZATION SPECIALIST

Duties:
  • Manage and improve the in-game stores in terms of content, experience and pricing strategy.

Create and manage promotion and A/B testing campaigns inside and across Eidos Montreal titles.

  • Set-up sponsoring mechanics, coupons, rebate, deal, cross-selling and up-selling offers.

  • Create customer loyalty efforts, newsletters and customer segmentations.

  • Define, follow, analyze and improve on the business KPIs and provide reporting on an on-going basis.

I know it's the way the world has gone but I hate that "monetisation specialist" is a thing.

Yup, It's definetly for the Avengers/S.H.I.E.L.D. project. And it is going to be a 100% online game.

They've thrown a lot of hints that their Marvel projects are 100% online-focused, so this doesn't surprise me. I highly doubt this has anything to do with Tomb Raider, which is probably basically done at this point.

This doesn't bode well. As long as it's not obtrusive, in my face or effect the actual game then I'm fine with it, I just don't see it happening...

In all honestly, probably all gaming companies should have these specialist in 2018.

Can't wait to see the game actually, and will be disappointed if we play as SHIELD agents or some other bullshit. Which will be pretty probable actually.

Goodbye avengers game thanks alot Marvel for giving it to square money enix
Whats with the doom and gloom. The game is a online game, so this should not come as a surprise.

My worst fear for the game is, that the players will play as SHIELD agents or something, and the actual Avengers will be reduced to something like Star Wars Battlefront II heroes. You can only play with as them for a certain amount of time, and need to unlock or something.

Heh if anything a specialized people that thoughtfully projects micro transactions in ways that don't make the fanbase angry is not a bad thing at all.

What if the new monetisation specialist at Eidos Montreal creates the good kind of monetisations, ie the ones gamers love? Like Valve and Blizzard. Only cosmetic and not pay 2 win.
I think many people would be down for that.
It could just be that they are simply hiring a specialist to avoid EA- or MS-like practices or Bungie were actual in game progress could be tied to paying money.

edit: I meant that this could be good news

Exactly. If we don't immediately jump on our Jim Sterling 'triple Aaaaaaa' high horses and see what happens. They are trying to make money which is fine amd they do see what happens when they go too far.

Sometimes i begin to wonder if all this microtransaction hell isn't just as much encouraged by Disney/Marvel as it is by the big publishers and developers, considering their track record with phone games and general corporate attitude. The whole MCU is one giant monetization plan built on a tested and proven foundation that has fans lining up in the millions and the same goes for their purchase and planning for Star Wars, but at least for Star Wars now i feel like it's finally starting to give them backlash.

As far as I'm concerned, online or not, Star Wars or not, these companies are anti-art. They're crap that is infesting video games with all these recent aggressive marvel deals. That said, I'm a grumpy buzzkill because i saw Avengers back in 2012 and went "welp, I'm not watching other Marvel movies like this." Because i think they're unlikable and dumb movies and way too corporate.

I hate the fact that this industry has gotten to a point were games need "monetization specialists". Urgh. My respect for studios like these certainly has dropped off a cliff over the last few months thanks to many shitty practices. I lack any faith whatsoever for any multiplayer centric game doing this thing right by now. Thanks to Activision, Bungie and EA especially. There really has to be a streak of gaas done right to restore my faith...

But I guess that it's better to hire someone knowing how to do it rather than doing it all wrong; isn't it, Battlefront 2?

I hope they officially reveal this Avengers game soon, because the whispers and murmurs about it make it sound worse and worse all the time. An Avengers game where you might play as an Avenger, where there might be a singleplayer element, and where they're trying to hire a fulltime lootbox expert.

Unsurprising. Much like the average Masai family consists of a father, a mother, a child and two cultural anthropologists, the average game development outfit nowadays consists of a designer, a programmer, an artist and three monetization specialists.

Kind of frustrating. There is obviously some appreciable talent at Eidos Montreal but it seems time and time again they are stifled by stupid decision making. Human Revolution and Mankind Divided, especially, show occasional glimpses of what they could do with a huge budget and unlimited time, but I sadly can't say EM has ever made an undeniably GREAT game. Given the stuff I've heard about th Avengers game and the fact that I kind of don't give a fuck about Avengers to begin with, I'm not expecting much here. Probably just their late-to-the-party version of The Division / Destiny in terms of structure.

Reading "Eidos Montreal" and "Monetization Specialist" in the same sentence sucks big and hurts a lot. What a plague on gaming, monetization has been.

Surprised that they aren't trying to couch the job title in softer language like, "Community Engagment Specialist" or "Live Services Specialist"

Could be worse though. They could have called the position, "Money Extraction Consultant"

Goes in hand with my thinking that Square-Enix are not as good as last gen (they're steadily getting worse and worse, imo). Their Western games have been a shambles this gen. Dunno why they're getting a free pass all the time.

"Wallet Extractor", "Credit Card Extraction Expert", "Money Dispenser Expert", "Monetary Expansion Consultant".

Surely monetization specialists include talented creatives that will nurture a well told story, craft optimized bug-free code, and express thoughtfully art-directed worlds & characters right? Right guys? Why you all laughing?

Nirolak any indictation that this has a single player campaign? Almost everything i remember seeing about this game is online focused.
For Avengers, Crystal Dynamics is hiring a singleplayer producer, so there's at least some kind of campaign. There's also a ton of multiplayer stuff, so there are three possibilities for the game.

The first is that it's like Battlefront or Uncharted where multiplayer and singleplayer are distinct, and the multiplayer is supported long after launch given their "play the game for years to come" comment.

The second is that it's like Ghost Recon and the game has a big optional co-op campaign (you would likely still hire singleplayer producers for this as their skill set is more accurate), and given the "many modes and campaigns" comment, probably has a PvP only mode a la Ghost Recon's Ghost War too.

The third is that it's like Destiny, where the campaign is just part of the pseudo MMO setup, but since those are still designed like singleplayer campaigns, they're hiring staff experienced with singleplayer to make it.

What it definitely isn't is something like Rainbow Six or Overwatch where it's just a PvP game.

Guardians of the Galaxy is too hard hard to tell because that's competing with Tomb Raider jobs and neither are labeled, with only Eidos' Avengers jobs being distinct.

I just wonder where some people think the industry would be if they were still operating in the 90s. The health of the industry screams that the bad attempts haven't really hurt things.

Actually reading this makes it sound like they're looking for someone to devise better monetization strategies for consumers. Games are gonna seek additional forms of revenue post-release nowadays. Might as well have a better approach to it.

Still, I'm shocked to find out what these companies are after is my money.

It certainly hurt the franchise Eidos Montreal is associated with. Iam talking about Deus ex. I bought mankind divided at launch. Never again.
