Billionaire Elon Musk has committed to fund efforts to fix Flint homes that still have contaminated water.

The Tesla owner tweeted in response to another user who asked him to respond to people saying there was "NO WAY (he) could help get clean water to Flint". Musk responded and said "Please consider this a commitment that I will fund fixing the water in any house in Flint that has water contamination above FDA levels. No kidding."

How serious Musk is with his claim is not known.

Wanna provide a timetable, Elon? I'm sure Flint can wait another 4 years for clean water.

If he actually follows through I'll take back most of the bad things I've said about him. He should still treat his employees better.

I feel like I'm constantly hearing about what Elon Musk is about to do and rarely hear about what he actually does

Hopefully he can do it. He has the resources and a lot of intelligent people at his disposal.

Hey if he does it then great. A rich person will have done something material we can all see that has an actual impact on peoples lives that doesn't require everyone to have money themselves or a tax write off charity. Wouldn't change my feelings on the fact that he and every billionaire out there got rich off the backs of the rest of us and that money they essentially have stolen should go into fixing problems like Flint in the first place, but here we are.

Wouldn't it be great if all US billionaires got together and funded a complete overhaul of the infrastructure? We could call it Taxes.

Oh oh. Will he say the leading water treatment specialist doesn't know what he is talking about because they disagree with him?

If he does this deed and causes no disasters that will be some positive reputation well earned.

Err how?

Filters in every home is the only option other than total system repipe from my understanding.

If you are getting mad at Musk for funding this then why aren't YOU funding it?

If this earns him goodwill, well, he earned it for fixing a problem that apparently hasn't been fixed yet.

Elon Musk's promise to Flint feels about as genuine as Michael Scott's promise to the Scott Tots.

Isn't it a little late for this? Almost all the houses are now below fda levels

That's what he's promising. To install filters in every home that has water above legal limit. He was asked to use local plumbers too. Can't see how this can be viewed negatively but it is.

For context, he's just talking about installing filters in contaminated homes, not laying all new pipe. Should be pretty manageable, especially since the city claims the lead level is below the FDA requirements. Hopefully he does it beyond Flint, where the situation has greatly improved, and helps spread it to the much larger amount of people exposed to it around the country

This looks legit in that case.

It's viewed negatively because he tends to promise stuff that's vanity or pie in the sky type. That's not what this sounds like.
