https://www.pcgamer.com/epic-on-pulling-metro-exodus-from-steam-we-dont-want-to-do-that-ever-again/

"We had been talking to those guys for a number of months," he said, "and they made some decisions on their end—this is not a throw under the bus thing, it's just the timing of where that came together and what was important to their business—we decided to do it together, we both knew there was the potential for the thing that happened in terms of communication. I think it felt way worse and was bigger than we thought, and in real-time, we spent time talking ... 'we will never do this again in this way.'

"And I think we're not in a situation now where that could ever happen, because now we're live and we have a view out in time, and we can work with everybody ... We have a case study where it says 'maybe we should make our decisions earlier,' and we will."

Good point. When you're fucking over consumers, you shouldn't be quite so blatant about it.

if you are going to do it, own up to it. Literally doing the same thing. Doesn't matter if it wasn't up for preorder.

Surprised they didn't add a "but you're forcing us to do it!" at the end.

Fuck off Epic, if you're going to use shitty underhanded tactics at least have the decency to own up to it.

Pretty sure they're mainly talking about pulling the game from Steam right before release, when they've already been taking pre-orders on there. Something like Control and Outer Worlds, which weren't anywhere near close to release and hadn't taken pre-orders yet, isn't really similar to that.

That being said, pulling a crowdfunded game that backers expected to get on Steam from the start isn't much better. If anything it's worse.

And The Outer Worlds.

Control.
I think what they mean is that the game was already available for pre-order on Steam (and Steam keys on other sites) and people had pre-ordered it already. Those two games were never available to pre-order.

Phoenix Point though... pulling a crowdfunded game is kind of even more bullshit than the Metro thing was.

I didn't even know about the other 2 games more recently. This is some battered wife syndrome kinda shit.

Edit: Eh, poor analogy actually, unless we all start buying into it each time.

Somewhere.
You guys are bringing The Outer Worlds and Control up, but were they even up for preorder (Control definitely wasn't)?

Still, be nice if they don't do that to crowd funded stuff that steam keys were planned with also.

I think they're talking about pulling a game that was already for sale. Outer Worlds, etc had Steam pages but weren't taking pre orders... but by all means, let the hate continue to flow.

- Phoenix Point was even worse since they didn't honor the backers previous choice, unlike Metro preorders.

- If that's how you "feel".... why did you choose to use it as an example of success on the GDC presentation?

A little too late to bother with the appearance of integrity when you've been showing your true colors for the past month.

I think future announcements that are coming to PC will refrain from slapping a Steam logo on the platforms it'll be on and just have the standard PC logo.

They are talking about not doing it hat close to release again.

They are still going to be paying for exclusives in the future.

As for whether Epic will continue grabbing exclusives in general, the panel said that its current strategy is about getting the 88/12 revenue split out there—a way to get off the ground—and that Epic won't be negotiating exclusivity deals at this rate forever.

"We could go to zero, or we could go to very very few major exclusives within a given year," said Allison. "We will definitely not be doing them on the scale we're doing them now."
