All the game is easy outside of the Super Boss.

"In Basic you deal 20% more damage, take 20% less damage and get 20% more XP."

This isn't a big deal.
It does make the first 5 levels or so harder by a fair amount, so a lot of people get turned off instantly but does feel a lot better later on.

Best advice I have for these first levels is start by grinding 1 or 2 levels right at the start on the easiest mobs around, it'll even out pretty quick so you won't be overleveled the entire game and makes the start easier. The boars in V 1F or 2F especially will randomly one shot people early on. I think I just fled from them until I was lvl 3 or 4 or whatever it was, it's been a little while.

Then again I'm the kind of person who restarts the game if any of my character dies and doesn't get full xp, if you don't mind dragging dead bodies around and using rez items super early then it's not as much of an issue.

These games (like all JRPGs) have never appealed to me but I decided to try out the demos of IV, V and Untold 1/2. I especially love that there is much less focus on story and the dialogue that's there seems well written and not cheesy like most RPGs. The only RPGs I was ever able to enjoy are Pokemon, Paper Mario 2, Mario & Luigi and the Golden Sun games but it seems I may have to add EO to the list.

If I had to pick only one, which one has the most fun gameplay and the best worldbuilding and characters?

EOV is probably the best game in the series but story wise it's really bare bones, so gameplay wise that one wins easily.

If you want something more story focused I'd go with EO3, but that's a DS game so you can't buy it digitally. Still worth checking out for sure.

Less story is a big plus for me. I do enjoy good NPC interaction and dialogue though.

EO4 is considered a great game for newcomers to the series, so I'd recommend that one as well.

I'd go in release order, as they do add some neat QoL stuff every time they make a new one making it difficult to go back.

None of the games are really story focused so you don't have to worry about the games being story heavy at all unless you play the Story modes of Untold 1 and 2(both games have a Classic mode) but some of them still end up telling minimalist stories that can have quite an impact(1 and 3 are considered the fan favorite stories).

Time is a huge constraint for me, so I only want to pick one game. Whichever one has more exploration and more interesting world building and characters will do.

If I were to play only one, I'd get V.

You wouldn't be making a mistake by getting III or IV either.

Summary:

IV: best game for newcomers.
III: best classes, best story
V: Tons of Customization, QOL stuff, great classes.

Untold 2 is also great.

With those first week sales, I'm more confident than ever that Atlus will ensure EO X gets brought over to the West.

I wonder if I should change my classes for EO2U. Right now my team are:

Dark Hunter / Sovereign / Alchemist
Troubadour / War Magus

But I'm feeling I'm wasting my DH potential without a Hexer, so I'm training one right now and maybe she would replace the Troubadour unit, mostly because the Sovereign class is pretty fun to train. I'm thinking if I should retire later my Alchemist unit with a Gunner (or Ronin... ok no lol), just to experiment the new classes.

Those are really good numbers, EO is well and alive, hopefully Sega/AtlusUSA feels the same way about it in the west.

I guess I'll go with V then but why is IV better for newcomers?

In summary, it's pretty difficult to screw yourself with a bad party in 4, it's the easiest title in the series, and people seem to like the airship mechanic which is used to travel from one dungeon to another.

Is this 'west' as in 'just NA'? Fingers crossed for EU, I hope we get a physical release. Perhaps they'll reason that it's worth getting it over relatively fast or not at all.

Edit: looks like EU too on the Nintendo sites, unless they are just optimistically interpreting the 'west' in an image from Atlus USA as meaning both.

At least it's not "Etrian Odyssey Generations", and they managed to work an "X" into the title.

My wallet is ready.

Even better, won't have to import it. Now to hope there's no a ton of releases at the same time. These early months tend to be loaded as hell.

Kind of funny, just the other day I started playing EOV again.

Despite getting it at release, I've either been busy, or playing something else, and haven't made it past the fifth floor yet. Looks like I picked the right time to jump back in.
I actually restarted the game a few months back, and decided to try something different. Instead of just building one team for the game like I usually do, I'm building characters in every class, so I can pick what works best for a situation. I'll keep going with this file.

And EOV's first stratum boss is down.
It seemed like the typical first boss with helpers, but I was caught off guard by it being immune to all status effects. My normal strategy of overpowering the first boss didn't work, and I had to rest my botanist, losing poison for line heal. I won by outlasting it with botanist and hound heals, and the warlock's lighting for the most coverage on the support FOEs.

Not sure what the strategy would be for teams with less healing, though I guess I'm also at a lower level due to playing with all classes this time.

Anyways, I finally get to see the second stratum, it has some nice music.

I'm still waiting for Etrian Odyssey Nexus to show up on Best Buy so it can qualify for GCU. Will probably be the last game I get with it.

CRY SOULLLLLLL

Wasn't as low accuracy as it is in EO2U. If you didn't bind her head you're pretty much one bad roll from a party wipe.

I just got EOV. Any hints regarding party composition? Is there a good guide out there?
I recommend having someone to deal physical damage, like a Masurao or a Dragoon. Have someone to deal elemental damage, like a Warlock. You'll need a source of healing, which a Shaman can do along with providing buffs (though it takes a little while for Shaman healing to take off, so you may need to start out as a Botanist and reclass later, or augment your healing with items). How to fill out the rest boils down to personal preference. The only caveat is that having too many "summoner" types (Necromancer, Rover, maybe Dragoon) can be a problem because the number of slots you have for summoned allies is limited.

All kinds of builds are viable, but as a rule of thumb in EO I try to include some form of elemental damage, multiple target damage, raw damage at low TP cost, healing, a defensive tank and binds.

As such, I went with Fencer (elemental chain skills mean multiple attacks for little TP cost), Dragoon, Masurao (who mostly broke the enemies defences), botanist and Rover (specialised in hound for the healing doggo). Boring but balanced for long stretches of dungeon crawling.

I've seen so many viable builds though, the main thing to avoid is having more than two of the summon classes (Dragoon, Rover, necromancer) as you only have three slots for bunkers, animals and wraiths.

Shaman has low healing capabilities until you unlock their specialization, but if you can handle it then the party's fine.
