All launch copies (aka all copies) will have the bonuses right? I just ordered it from Best Buy but they don't say anything about the art book and what not.

I picked it up yesterday and am already having fun with it! I didn't get very far into EOV but this seems like a nice culmination of the series (I 100%d the original EO and played a lot of original 2, but all subsequent attempts to get deep into the sequels fell off 10-hours in).

Also realized I should just suck it up and turn on full auto-mapping ala Strange Journey. I'm too old to draw all the walls by hand anymore.

So happy it lets me change the portraits whenever I want. I had so many misgivings about color combinations and voice choices that rerolling would have been super irritating. Also glad to hear I can put other class portraits on different ones I want to roll. Really opens up my shallow class choices. Gonna have to reconnect my Nintendo account so I can look at the DLC (in EOV I made my lead the school uniform dude so he was an isekai protagonist).

I was worried that there was only really one dedicated healer (Medic) but I'm making do with a heal-specced Sovereign and a Gunner with heal shot. Trying out Arcanist and their paralyze is really potent but they don't have much else to contribute in battle at lower levels. I think I may need some other kind of ranged attacker.

My copy got dispatched and I cancelled my Amazon order.

I really wanted to play this today. Guess I'll try and finish EO5 or something.

I LOVE the series.

I've currently finished all the games except untold 2 (which Im on stratum 5 currently) and my copy of EO5 is still sitting on the shelf sealed.

Preordered this and it makes me feel good to know that it will be waiting for me when I eventually finish the above two games.

Etrian Odyssey and Battle Network are two of my favorite game series of all time. Don't mind the quantity of titles at all.

Man, no one is selling this near me. Gamestop, Best Buy, nothing. I don't even see a digital copy is for sale on the e-shop*?

*Edit - I just looked again and the buy digital button is there, it must have just not been "out" when I looked earlier. I guess I'll have to get it digitally.

Reached the second floor. This was definitly the best first floor in the entire series so far.
I really didn't expect a boss fight this early. It wasn't hard, but it lived for quite some time. But damn, this was really unexpected and cool as hell! :D

Never felt so paralyzed by party choice before ;_;
Surprised people haven't been posting their picks, was thinking:

[Hero][Protector][Harbinger]
[Gunner][Medic/WarMagus]

[Protector][Pugilist][Imperial?]
[Nightseeker][Arcanist]

I always have a 'protector' class in my party and figure I might as well try out the games flagship class, Hero, but worried it might clash too much with Protector. Never really gave the late game classes in EO3 & 4 a fair chance, so tempted to fit in a Shogun or Imperial into the party for once.

I had been trying to categorize each of the classes into their primary roles but it's difficult, they're not so cut and dry. The game does a decent job with the categories already, describing them as frontline, backline, flex, offense, support, defender etc. But throws in specialty roles like aliment specialist, explorer, elemental etc.

Slowly whittling down the choices...

Edit: Hmmm, on second thought Arcanist and Pugilist don't really work well together...
Loved the Pugilist for boss fights in EO5 might train one up but keep it benched.
Probably works well to have an explorer team and a boss battle team anyway. So might add Farmer and Sovereign into an explorer team.

I'm thinking Hero and Shogun because I've never used them, and at least one Imperial because they're my favorites.

Not sure where else to go, but I need to get a back line.

Question about using the hero in a party- I remember a promo video showing off their skill of having a double as the sixth party member. Does that need an open frontline slot to make the most out of?

Edit: that's a point, which other classes use the sixth slot in Nexus?

It's tough isn't it. I spent a bit looking blankly at the class select just cos their was so much choice. Finally gone with:
HERO - PUGILIST - HIGHLANDER
ARCANIST - ZODIAC
Not too far in but they all seem to be holding their ground. Defense on the Pugilist is a little low and the Hero could use some speed ups but generally they are stuff I can work on. Big surprise is the Highlander, I picked him just cos I liked his portrait and the guy hits like a truck, joy to have on the team.

Man, this game is hard to track down already. Amazon, Best Buy and GameStop are all sold out. This is one of those titles where it pays to pre-order.

Ninja does. I think those are they only two classes... So I suppose you shouldn't have a party with both Ninja and Hero unless the build doesn't heavily use the 6th slot skill.
Thanks, much appreciated. Do you know if Hero needs two frontline slots? I'm guessing yes but no idea.

I have to wait until the 7th for it to arrive, but I'm definitely going to go without the dedicated healer class again.

Alright, fine. I can get back to Etrian Odyssey V later, time to hop on board this swan song.

Well progress made, finally settled on an initial party:

[Protector][Hero][Harbinger]
[Zodiac][Gunner]

Will probably swap them out as I go along, but will do to start.

Love the Inn background looks like something out of Ace Attorney!

Can someone explain the Hero to me a bit? It looks like you would want to keep a spare slot in the front row for him, if you are making him a melee/offense guy, otherwise his "after images" are attacking from the back row slot, right? That seems ... not ideal? Everyone seems to agree he's fantastic, is that for reasons other than the after images?

Possibly not, depends on how you spec your Hero, haven't explored it too much yet, but if you're defense focused, possibly with Protector subclass I could see a backrow after image being useful to tank hits - not sure how viable that would be.

Edit: although to answer your question about offensive spec Hero, I'm sorry I don't know, I'm basically going blind on this game.
I would guess you're right, leave a space in front row for him to maximize damage, but wouldn't worry about it, Hero looks like a balanced class (though I've yet to see max stat distributions of the classes compared)

Okay, so I'm thinking of a party of:

HERO - ???
NIGHTSEEKER - SOVEREIGN? - ???

Questions:

1. For front row, any strong suggestions? I'm leaning towards Pugilist, Land, Highlander, or Imperial
2. Is nightseeker a back row class?
3. Is sovereign a good choice for back row?
4. Any suggestions on final back row class?

Any advice on filling this out with good synergy classes and strategies to employ would be greatly appreciated

Looks like my Best Buy preorder actually did show up today, they were just testing my faith with that Wednesday estimate.

I'll have to dive in and grab the DLC tonight, then it's back to finishing up EOV.

If I'm rolling Hero on the front row is it really worth throwing a Protector in? I'm thinking of throwing a Puglist on the front instead and going.

Hero - Pugilist
Healer - Gunner - Harbinger

A few deaths and ~5 hours (+ resets) later and I am done for today. Reached 3F in the second labyrinth.
Beat the wounded Berserker King. He killed me once but he was still rather easy thanks to arm binds.

...next up the REAL Boss of the dungeon... xD

Is nightseeker a back row class?
They do more damage on the front, they are all about inflicting status effect and doing massive damage. Although their "Throw" ability works from the back, but they are better for front line imo.

You could use them in the back and when they inflict status effect, switch to front line to maximize damage.

I like that, Sovereign & Nightseeker work well in either row, and both offer different skills to the party so would seem like a good pair.
It depends on how you want to spec them.
Sovereign can hold a shield and heavy armor so can tank hits with buffs, Nighseeker won't maximize damage from back row but has less chance dying.
Personally I had both of them in the front row in their respective games, I think I might have moved them around in FOE/ Boss fights though.

Pugilist would be a good addition, covers binds while Nightseeker covers aliments. I would say, though, with both of them on the team you'd lack multi enemy coverage, so look at a class with multi hit skills to add to the party, maybe Zodiac for elemental damage.

I think it's worth a shot. Just keep in mind that investing a lot of points into Hero's defensive skills means they probably won't be able to be the core of your offense. Though you've got pugilist and Gunner who could cover offense.

In EO4 you would put the Nightseeker in the backline, switch them to the frontline after inflicting a status effect, then put them back in the backline after dishing out some damage. Not sure how that works in Nexus.

Yes, you need to leave a free spot on the front row for Hero, unless you've got a Hero with Gunner subclass or something.

Afterimage is one of the most powerful buffs in the game. It can be even stronger than the real Hero, so effectively it more than doubles your attack power.

Sounds good, I'll probably keep a protector in waiting just in case I change my mind but I really want to give pugilist a shot.

I ordered this game despite never finishing (but loving) EO4? Will I likely have a decent time with this one? I think I only have time for one of these games in my life right now—and I'm having a baby soon, which means this'll probably be my "one game" for awhile.

I froze for at least 30 minutes when choosing my party, the only thing i wish was for the necromancer class to come back from the last game.

Sovereign is REAL good.

And you'll get an accessory that gives standby guild members XP (at a reduced rate) so make all the characters you want.

Current setup is Hero, Landy in the front row with Sovereign, Gunner, and Harbinger in the back row. Also the Gunner is a dog. Basically hoping that combining a lot of passive heals makes up for the lack of a dedicated healer. Wouldn't be surprised if that doesn't last past a strata or two though.

Man, character creation takes a while, though, especially with the additional portrait packs. I do like that having Beasts, Yggdroids, the various races from EO5, etc, all in there gives you a lot of variety beyond just normal looking dudes. Of course there was also temptation to just make a team full of the cover characters (especially since they have a few extra poses). The Re: Fantasy character is a cool option but they clash with everyone else's art style.

I've been doing: front(DPS, Protector) backline(Mage, healer, sniper) in every game since 2 so I really wanna switch it up this time while still being viable, any suggestions?
