EU wants to react with new penalty tariffs on Xbox and other goods

Keyword: any longer :P
The UK is still in the EU. That's what this whole Brexit mess is at the moment; our government cannot agree on any trade deals with Brussels, so until that is in place we can't leave otherwise it'd be an even bigger disaster than it already is. We have up until October to agree on deals or repeal Article 50 or we're leaving the EU with no trade deals in place and the UK economy will go up in flames.

If you are going to screw your citizens with these tariffs, you might at least help your own industry by taxing products competing with your own. There are no European consoles, so I find the whole thing pretty pointless. Specially when Xbox is already selling so bad in Europe.
maybe that's the point, Xbox doesn't sell that well here, so just tax that so European consumers are not too concerned. But who knows, policies are messy anyway and politics are generally useless.

The EU have just signed a significant new trade deal with Japan. There's plenty of tariff-free gaming product to go around for EU citizens.

That deal does not include tariff-free gaming products at all.
I don't know why people associate trade deals with tariff free all the time.

Cheese and processed pork are tariff free or near tariff free.

What more so than Trump's administration? I don't think so.

I also associate 'right wing' with belligerency when it comes to foreign policy, so kindly remind me how many military campaigns Japan are involved in right now compared to the US.
Japan is constitutionally banned from having a traditional military.

Foreign policy is not all it takes to be right wing.

Well said and Japan been able to dominate console sales in the EU for the last 30 years. The EU always had it in for Microsoft with various actions over Windows. No doubt Google and Apple will be in the EU sites, to help make up the short fall of the UKs £70 billion. net contributions over a parliament

I’m a bit unsure of the connection between Xbox and Republican constituencies? Like I get Whisky and Harley-Davidson but Microsoft is centered at more Liberal states. Either way as long as it brings this crap closer to an end.
Isn't the Xbox brand quite strongly linked with first person and military shooters? The rights favourite genre.

This is so stupid. [joke]US should just join the EU and[/joke] skip the tariffs, they are a thing of the past.

Why do video games always have to suffer from politics as if they are the weakest shackles in everything from taxes, censors, etc...?

Yeah, it's ridiculous Xbox's name being mentioned, while other American companies like Apple don't.
It does feel like video-games are always the scapegoat.
Cinema and music medias are stronger than video games and they have strong defenders and they can't be touched so easily because they are older medias but also more important medias according to some which is not the case. I can guarantee you that people now play video games more than watching movies. Even in cinema, many video games are getting more and more adaptations. Video game domain should really get more respect and stronger defenders these days because it is no longer a toy as it was considered before but really one of the fundamental domains in media and one of the important arts too.

I really hope things will change when in the next Tokyo Olympics, e-sports will be part of the olympic sport games. This will make many people in the world make fun of this and consider this so futile, irrelevant and not worthy and should belong to the ancestral sports but when they realize that some young or normal which look veyr normal and not like famous sport celebirites can win medals for their countries, they will no longer mock up video games and longer consider them just toys or dangerous entertainments.

This is quite an unsubstantiated point of view, to say the least.
This is all shades of wrong. Completely and utterly. Microsoft and their employment policies are way ahead of the others (and IF businesses can be political a way further left than the others in this field). Japan is a very right wing country with a right wing business culture.
Are my sarcasm meters broken?
I’d say that if you seriously, even for a minute, thought that it was a serious post, then yes your sarcasm detector has probably never existed in the first place
😂

You guys are disgusting calling Xbox and Xbox fans for alt righters and trying to associate Xbox with the alt right. It’s so easy to tell what you are trying to do and mods should seriously warn or ban you for that.

Xbox gamers associated with the alt right? Show me the poll or data. One of the dumbest things I’ve heard.

Because this question was asked: Custom law always tracks were the country of export is. This means if the Xbox is imported from China, this tariffs would not be applicable. For thos interested please help yourself with the UCC (union Cutoms Codex) articles 4, 134-150, 201, 158-195 and for our tarrifs article 56 UCC and the general duty database.

The accusation that Xbox gamers overall are associated with the alt-right is utterly ludicrous and has no evidence to back that statement up.

Extremists are on every platform, it isn't exclusive to Xbox, it isn't exclusive to Steam etc.

Do people think Playstation has no alt-righters on the platform?

I have literally seen Nazi signs and drawings when playing splatoon 2 on Nintendo, let's not kid ourselves that these morons are solely on one platform or that this has anything to do with the alt-right.

This is the EU being the EU.

Ah yes the same far left company that put out a game with a gay conversion subplot in it.
Yikes. Maybe take a little break from the internet, guys.

Think you're going to need more evidence on that than your own feelings. And don't link me some report that shows me that video games bring in more money cos that's not what's being argued here.

You really think video games are more relevant in the wider public's eyes than movies?

can people not read?

These were the tariffs aimed at trump supporters
When the US imposed steel and aluminum tariffs, Brussels imposed punitive duties on motorcycles like Harley-Davidson, whisky and various foods to hit republican constituencies and the Trump voters among farmers.
These are further tariffs not aimed at any one group
Now she's targeting video game consoles like Microsoft's Xbox and fitness equipment, helicopters and handbags, casino tables and tobacco, vodka and frozen lobsters.
america can fuck off with its awful agricultural produce anyway, cunts

This thread is crazy. One poster makes a joke about Xbox being far right and loads of people take it seriously and act like the whole thread is calling Xbox players nazis.

Anyway, reactionary tariffs seem a bit petty but at the same time Trump wins if the EU doesn't respond and that's definitely not good.

It seems few people actually take a moment to understand what they're reading. The temptation to go into outrage mode is just too strong.

Anyway, the EU has to react in some way and there's a limit to how targeted these tariffs can be.

While the original post was a joke, it is not appropriate to associate political leanings to consoles and fanbases. So please move on from this derail and get back on topic. Thank you.

Again, all that is saying is that video games bring in more revenue than movies or music, but that is unsurprising considering it's much more expensive.

The original poster was asserting that video games are more popular than movies overall, which I'm disputing, especially considering the broader demographics that movies attract. You think there are more people that care more about video games than care about movies? Really?

Edit: just read the staff post. Missed it before since I was writing my post and got a phone call, sorry

It’s hard to tell on here sometimes especially since I’ve seen similar sentiments stated unironically.
“Playstation is sociodemocrat and Stadia is libertarian”.
Really? If everything else didn’t, even that didn’t ring any bells that it was just a joke?
Wasn’t funny at all but c’mon...
I’m constantly amazed at how people miss jokes on here and go for literal interpretations, considering I’m not even a native English speaker and yet it was clear as a day to me. Maybe a little break from the internet would help.

The Xbox is imported from China to the EU by Microsoft's Europe from China, so it wouldn't count as an American import in any case. I guess they mean any Xbox peripherals and products that are made in the USA, if there even are any?!

Isn't the UK (and maybe Germany and France) like the only place in europe where the current XBOX has a relevant market share? And thanks to Brexit they aren't in the EU anymore, sooo... not gonna hurt the XBOX too much I would say, at least not this generation. Could be really bad for the next XBOX though, because that will probably effect prices.
Depending on how the UK leaves, it could raise prices this generation anyway. If we leave the EU with no deal, WTO-default tariffs would be applied to Xbox (and Sony and Nintendo) consoles, whereas currently, the tariffs are lower than the WTO default, due to being in the EU. That's why the EU can say they'll make the tariffs higher, because they're already set lower than the maximum amount allowed by the WTO. If they already used the WTO defaults, there would be no wiggle room to legally be allowed to raise the tariffs higher.
