Eve: The game thats always great to read about.

Currently Eve Online players are in a battle which involving thousands of players and ships valued totaling $1,000,000+

Essentially, two player factions are facing off in the same system. Over 6,000 players are currently logged in, more than any in a single system before. The Imperium is attacking a massive ship owned by the Pandemic Horde … and if you don't know what those words mean, it'd take a slideshow and a thesis to explain. Short version: It's a culmination of a long-standing grievance between two parties, to be settled on a larger scale than has ever been attempted in this 15-year-old game.

The reason this battle is being designated as a "million dollar battle" is because over $1,000,000 of in-game items on which players have spent their money could be destroyed.

As of this post the battle is going on

This game always has the wildest stories. Looking forward to reading about the results.

Edit: Just read the what led up to this million dollar battle, and wow! Amazing! They could just collect these summaries and sell them as a book. This battle is gonna be epic and has been building up for a long time.

Edit 2: Oh wait, I kept reading and maybe nothing major will happen? That summary was yesterday though, not sure if the ongoing battle part in OP are just small skirmishes caused by the huge standoff or if they've gone all in. Would've surprise me if nothing happens though, as no one wants to lose so much money.

That's crazy. EVE always has the best stories.

After reading the reddit post, can anyone explain to me why the battle was planned to begin on certain day? Why wouldn't one group just sneak attack the other rather than agreeing to begin fighting the next day?

It can be fun to play to if you get into the psychological stuff as well. Tricking or baiting people into traps was so much fun. I really had a good time with Eve but it is a huge time sink and you really have to engage with the player base to get much out of it.

I wish someone would make more sandbox MMOs like this but in a different setting.

How does this compare to the huge battle that took place a few years ago because someone forgot to renew a standard lease?

THIS IS NEVER NOT INTERESTING TO READ ABOUT:

The great thing about this story is that we can pick up right where we left off in 2014. After that big giant battle, the winning side (The ClusterFuck Coalition, CFC from here on) were kings of the universe. While they didn't own all of the space, it was clear that no one could challenge their power. Their leader, The Mittani, had built the largest and most organized online gaming organization on the internet, with an estimated member count exceeding 15,000 people, and capable of summoning over 1,000 players to login to the game at a moment's notice. With nothing left to conquer, he decided to try and grow the CFC into something even greater. He had already started a gaming news website named after himself, so he started a Twitch channel to go along with it, and then started cozying up to people in the gaming industry. He started approaching different gaming companies and offering to bring the CFC to their game if they would give them special promotions and free ingame items, and this worked. They did this for Planetside 2 and H1Z1. The Mittani would constantly push these promotions on his members in the CFC, and for the most part this went pretty well.

The Bloodbath of B-R5RB? Much bigger in terms of capital ships involved and about twice as many players in a single system. Too many for the server to handle. About one third of the attackers got disconnected and couldn't reconnect, the game slowed down to a crawl, and Panfam (the side Piggles called Moneybadger Coalition) ultimately won. Not because they committed or outsmarted Imperium, but because the server crapped out and the mechanics heavily favour the defending side right now.

So yeah, it's over, the defenders won, overall losses were apparently quite low though it'll probably take a while for the battle report to process.

So the reddit post ends by saying it's unlikely a full scale battle will actually happen, is that the case or did they start fighting for real?

Them having a staring contest sounds hilarious.

Some rogue just needs infiltrate and launch a missile to ignite it.

There's at least one history book about the first few years called Empires of Eve. It's well researched and quite interesting. The author is also (slowly) releasing it for free as a podcast: https://soundcloud.com/empiresofeve

There's also a short excerpt about a famous battle in video form:

That's crazy. EVE always has the best stories.

To give the defenders a chance to react and set up a defense, citadels have to be hit three times. The first attack can be a surprise attack, the second has to happen exactly 24 hours after the first, the third one week after the second. This is going to change a bit with the next patch, but it won't be completely removed.

They did, Goons lost. If you have 12 hours to waste, here's a stream archive from INN, with interviews and pre- and post-battle analysis, hosted by senior members of the opposing forces (Northern Coalition's Matterall and Tactical Narcotics Team's Dirk MacGirk):

And here's some analysis from the winning side. tl;dr: due to a blatant gameplay oversight (Citadels' repair ability is not affected by time dilation, unlike literally everything else in the game) The Imperium needed to be consistently firing almost all their firepower at the Pandemic Horde's Citadel for about six hours, while the Horde only has to tank damage for about 15 minutes and their Citadel is fully repaired.

Also, it was a laggy mess.
