Obtaining drake sword from the red dragon's tail in Dark Souls.
It became useless after early parts of the game, but it's so op compare to your starting weapon. I breezed through the first 10 hrs with it.

In Final Fanatsy Type-0 HD you can place characters to train for exp. It uses real life time, so you can just speed the process up by changing the date on your PS4. Didn't really trivialized the game but helped me not grinding for exp since there are so many characters you have to level up in the game. So, in other words: Boy was I happy to find that exploit.

There was a cloak in Morrowind in some cave by the water, it was WAY OP. It healed you at such a rate that you couldn't even drown. I found and used this to breeze through the rest of the game. Eventually it got patched out but I enjoyed it for a bit.

In Virtua Fighter 4 there was this kick and then grapple that you could do with Vanessa Lewis that for whatever reason always worked when playing against the CPU. Didn't work that well when playing against an actual human controlled opponent however.

In Suikoden 1 there is a gambling game in the first town you visit that always rolled the exact same number the first roll. So I was able to make a whole lot of money right off the bat so I was able to get well geared right away.

A glitch in Card Master/Arcana on SNES that allowed you to sell an infinite number of fake trash cans to get all the money you could want.
Then using said money to buy as many stat-boosting items as you want.
Then walking through everything.

There was a downside, though: if you boosted too high using just the pots, you could actually wrap around the values and set your character from 999 HP to 1HP (same with other stats too) and then you'd have to build it aaaaaall back up again. I found that if you stop a little short of maxed numbers leveling the character lets it max out naturally afterward.

NHL 94 on the PS1

If you hold Circle to flip the puck as long as you can and go behind your own goal, letting go of Circle while facing the opponents net to launch the puck will 100% land in their net. every time.
I feel like there's been such a glitch in every NHL game for a while.
In NHL 01, going full speed towards your own goal and swinging at full power was all you needed to score easily. Your player would send the puck flying across the whole field straight into the opponent's net.

My memory is hazy on S1, but I thought it was an intentional game design in S2 to have the values of items be worth more / less depending on the town. That way, if you get out there and leg supplies around the world, you make money by being a traveling merchant.

It is in 1 as well.
But I'm talking about gambling in S1. The first round on the game was scripted, so you just had to bet 10,000, win the round. Quit the game. Rinse and repeat. The ball was always on the right on the first round.

i accidentally discovered a cheat in the c64 version of wonder boy in monsterland (you had to go to a very specific location and press fire) that gave you all the hearts very early in the game

Not really an exploit but in Suikoden 2 I remember getting a double hit rune from some very early game enemy. I then farmed 3-4 of them and it made the majority of the game very easy. The rune was good even in end game.

International Superstar Soccer 2000 on the PS1.
You could always score if shooting from just beyond the box corner, no matter the difficulty level.

there was a card combination in Two Worlds 2 that let you summon a huge army of skeletons and it completely broke the game, it was glorious. Not really an exploit as I assume it was working as intended, but the game's AI clearly could not handle it.

Man I loved Two Worlds 2, dont @ me

Only one I can remember that I found by myself with my friend is in Secret of Mana for the SNES on the final boss. Cast healing during the boss main fire attack and you won't get hit during the healing animation...made that battle really easy.

Secret of Evermore:

Barrier (makes you invulnerable) + Energize (turbo-boosts your stamina cooldown)

It isn't a perfect "exploit", as Barrier is a missable Alchemy recipe and both use extremely rare ingredients to cast, but when combined they make the final boss battle laughably easy. 10 year old me felt like a damn genius.

I don't know if it trivialized the game, but I discovered the Rainbow Road shortcut in Mario Kart 64 as a kid.

Only later did I learn that pretty much everyone else had discovered it.

Actua Soccer 98 I found out that if you kick from a corner in a straight line up the line to the goal the ball would always go in the net. I think it was a guaranteed goal.

In sega soccer slam co-op if you had a player enter the goal space the goalie would go an animation of knocking them out, making it impossible to defend a shot being made by the other player. My friend and I beat that game in one night, had a blast, then never touched it again.

About midway in BattleTech: The Crescent Hawk's Inception, I found a way to get an absurd amount of money that made the rest of the game a cakewalk, but apparently that was a plot point, not an exploit.

There's the deke move in NHLPA '93, but it seems like sports games always have some sort of goalie exploit.

The one that I would say I truly found on my own is Mario's climbing speed in the ColecoVision of Donkey Kong. His normal climbing speed is pretty slow (comparable to the arcade version, maybe a touch slower to account for the 4:3 screen,) but if you pause for a millisecond and then resume climbing, he speeds up dramatically, more than making up for the slight pause even on short climbs. That paused is so ingrained in me now that I can't play any version of Donkey Kong without pausing a bit when ever I'm climbing.

One of the FIFA games on ps2 had a bug where crossing the ball from top to bottom then doing a header was a instant goal no matter what

My entire playthrough of BOTW felt like an exploit. Once I realized how big traversal was, I min-maxed for stamina and just climbed everywhere. There was pretty much no reason to engage with the combat system most of the time, especially with breakable weapons.

The only time this ever happened for me was the ps1 version of The World Is Not Enough's casino mission. Just bet everything except $100 two or three times and the mission's over in as many minutes.

Shadow Warrior 2. Throw a two explosive ammo charms, and one bullet splitter(shotgun effect on any gun) charm on a guass rifle and it shreds any thing. How it works, I think, is that the explosions from the extra rounds do full damage instead of being split across the extra bullets.

Dragon age inquisition has an item dupe glitch when you get to the 2nd base in the game and basically after that point whatever the best material you have at the moment can be duped as well as armor and shit so you can just deck out your whole party free. This is before they just put that cheat store in the game proper

NHL Hitz! The CPU could never defend against the One-Timer.
Lmao exactly this! My brother and I figured that out one day and all of our games ended up having super ridiculous scores hahaha. Man I forgot about that until now, thanks!

Fuck that game was sooooo good though. Playing 3 on 3 on an alien planet with all of your players surrounded by blue fire with pirate hats and shit - that's the kind of sports game I can get into.

I'm not really good at stumbling across exploits on my own so thank god for the internet right?

Not necessarily an exploit but totally feels like one is the Komaki Tiger drop in Yakuza. As long as you get the timing down (varies from game to game) you can totally obliterate bosses/anybody.

also speaking of Yakuza.....

The Mr. Shakedown Exploit in Yakuza 0 is pretty broken, but i don't think they ever patched it. Basically you let Mr. Shakedown defeat you, then find him and defeat him to get all your money back and then some. Rinse and repeat. The amount basically exponentially increases due to this. Can easily be trivialized with Tauriners for heat actions and weapons and adjusting the difficulty before fighting him. I think they left it in since it does take a ridiculous amount of time normally to max your stats out and even then you can make then out essentially infinitely.

I don't know if this was really an "exploit" since it's hard to believe it could've been overlooked, but it didn't take me long to realize that joining the Fellowship in Ultima VII turned the roulette and rat race games into free money generators, because the payouts got so big that you could bet on every possible outcome and still come out ahead. (For roulette, the odds are 1 in 8 with a 14x payout; for the rat race it's 1 in 4 with a 6x payout.) And by stacking gold you could win so much that it wouldn't take long before the game would start glitching. Also, I didn't discover this myself, but you can guarantee a win at roulette by stealing back your gold and placing it on the winning color just before the wheel stops.

In Sekiro the blocking/parry animation is so fast that you can cancel one block into another, which actually means fast piano spamming block button to parry works most of the time when you cannot parry precisely.
I'm pretty sure the game has logic built in to stop this. Only your first press in a certain time window counts for parry, then it's just a block, or something.

At least, I'm pretty sure, because I get perfect parries far more often when press the button once, near the right moment, than when I press it 2-3 times quickly.

Spawn The Eternal on PS1. There is a 3 kick combo that you only have to hit circle over and over to do. You can basically beat every combat scenario just spamming this.

Don't remember which year it was, but one of the Madden (maybe even just NFL?) games on the N64(?...maybe GameCube. Idk.). If I did a Run option i could just run left and get by every defender. Every single time. You better believe I abused the hell out of that.

It was a REALLY cool game. Think like SSX's goofiness but applied to the NHL - and THEN some. There were so many unlockables, so many crazy things you could do, and the gameplay was fun until you discovered the exploits lol (even then though it became a battle to see who could exploit the game's weirdisms the best).

In SKATE (the first one) I found when you competed against other CPU characters in a game of s.k.a.t.e. you could do another 180 spin by using the right analog stick and the CPU wasn't able to do this so you would win every time.

Not technically an exploit, but the sneaking suit in Peace Walker combined with the hold-up mechanic completely breaks the game. By the end I was sprinting through missions and lightly tapping R1 whenever I was near an enemy. Unlike the tranquilizer there is no time limit for how long an enemy remains incapacitated.

I also found out I could cheese the clown car vehicle missions by smoke grenading my own position, switching to thermal goggles, then Fulton launching the troops as they poured out of the APC.

Streets of Rage 2, pick Axel, uppercut continually by mashing forward and B. Any difficulty below Mania and you'll 1CC the game easily with lives to spare.

Good thread.

Echoing your NHL series OP, NHL 96 for Genesis, crossing in front of the goal and shooting to the top left with a backhand shot scored a goal like... four shots out of 5.

For me, this is Madden-engine football games *the thread.* The CPU has not been significantly improved in about a decade or more... they might make changes one year to one aspect of defensive skill or abilities, but then fuck something else up. Like, in Madden '17, zone defensive was completely pointless, you may as well just never play zone because it was an automatic completion with nobody covering anybody. Then, in 18, they flipped it., so cover 3 and cover 4 were effective while man couldn't keep up with any players on the field...They didn't improve zones, they just made man defense horrible, and then in 19 they rebalanced it in another way.

Usually within about a week of playing the latest Madden I figure out the flaws in defensive coverage and playcalls, and then decide whether I want to make "house rules" banning me from using those plays or not. It ends up ruining the game for me. It'd basically be like creating house rules in a game like Dark Souls, or something, where you can't use "roll" or hit enemies in the back... and maybe you stick with it against skeletons or something, but inevitably you get to a boss that's beating you and you can't help but break out the devastating moves to win. It cheapens the game and makes it less fun that you have to implement house rules like that.

CPU Defensive playcalling is *SO BROKEN* and it's been broken for at least 15 years. The defensive playcalling works by picking a handful of plays based on the play that you, the offense, selects depending on your difficulty level. It's easily testable. Have a 1st and goal at the 1 yard line, come out in a shotgun, 2 TE, 2 WR, 1 RB formation... But call a pass play. The defense will come out in a 4/3 or 3/4, maybe nickle package, expecting the pass. But, same scenario, use the same formation, but choose a run play, the defense will come out in a 4-6, goalline, or stacked box formation. Other scenarios are also plainly obvious: Come out in a fake field goal package, the CPU will have a coverage call for the fake, but come out in a field goal play and the CPU Will have a FG block play selected. It's not "cheating," it's just dumb. There is no defensive playcalling AI, it's entirely jsut based on what you pick, and the defense changes based on a couple dice rolls or variables depending on the difficulty level you're playing on. I'm fairly certain the defense has, say, 4 or 5 plays to pick from based on your offensive selection, and let's say 3 are effective, one is mildly ineffective, and one is a disaster ineffective (e.g., like a huge gain if you read the defense right), and those number shift depending on your difficulty... so if you're on the easiest, then there 2 disaster ineffective choices, 1 effective, and 2 mildly effective, if you're on the hardest then there's 4 effective and maybe one mildly ineffective... And a dice roll decides which play the CPU chooses from that pre-filtered selection based on your play.

You might think "Well, at least it ends up challenging you to find the read," but usually it ends up becoming VERY easy to spot when the CPU has picked the "ineffective" play and just exploit it. In Madden '17, one of the last Maddens I really put a lot of time into in franchise mode (all madden, adjusted sliders ot make it more difficult, etc), you'd read man or zone and then adjust to one or two plays depending on it, and basically just wait for the CPU to give away their "tell." The CPU also never learns, there's no learning, no adaptation to your playcalls. In Madden, this meant if you have a burner WR1 or 2 who has a good release rating, you just wait till the CPU plays bump and run (e.g., jams the WR), and look at the safety help... if there's no help, just throw a streak to your WR1 and it's almost a guaranteed touchdown. So, you'd have to make house rules to make this competitive for you. "No streaks" or something. WHich totally ruins the fun of the game because streaks are part of football, they're an obvious concept in football.

It ruins the game.

I remember in the original Budokai Tenkaichi, you could land heavy blows (done by pressing x during normal melee attack combo) that stun an opponent.

If done with the correct timing you could land consecutive heavy blows and lock the opponent into an infinite combo loop where you would keep them stunned with heavy blows until they died.

I definitely abused this after I discovered it in the middle of a particularly difficult fight against Great Ape Vegeta.

Golden Axe 3; the easiest way to deal with tough enemies, including the four-armed fiends, griffin and cursed player characters is to stand with your back to the edge of the screen and stay in a blocking stance. They'll approach you and whenever they try (and fail) to hit you, immediately do a dash attack or combo. Since their attack getting blocked forces their AI to briefly recover, they'll never avoid, block or counter your counter. This works even if you're not at the edge of a screen, but having your back against the wall prevents pushback so retaliating is easier even if your character has limited range.

This is probably the only one I felt like my friends and myself discovered, because we were like 12 and back then there was no readily available internet like now. But in Mario Kart 64, in Wario Stadium, you can skip half the course by timing the boost appropriately when the race starts and jump from on top of the hill to go over the wall. We would play every course and this came down to whoever can jump over the wall first and then 3rd place getting lucky with lightning and screwing over first place on the big jump. 4th place is usually the guy who can't make the jump after like 2-3 attempts.

The other level was the snowman level, you can run over a snowman and it had to explode you off course. Little cloud dude would then put you behind the finish line and you can cross it for a lap. This one was a bit tougher to do because you had to land in a specific spot off course to get the trick to work. We usually left these levels for last when doing all the races because these glitches broke the game.

I'm sure they're widely known, but that's the only game breaking exploit I'd say I kind of discovered on my own due to no internet.
