No fanbase has ever prevented me from trying something to see if I like it.

Ironically, what discourages me from talking about things I like isn't so much bad fans within a thing's fanbase - it's the blind hatred of anti-fans who spend all their time being angry about said fanbase.

For example, I think Rick & Morty is pretty good. But I won't mention it casually because I don't want to listen to people waste everyone's time going on and on about how much they hate the show's fans.

I love Rick & Morty. I had no idea that a segment of the "fandom" ran with the intentional parody of stupid catch phrases and story beats until the end of this year. The whole Mulan Sauce debacle embarassed the hell out of me and now I'm quiet about my enjoyment of the program.

Rick and Morty is a fun little show. It isn't very clever, but it is creative and interesting. I second the motion that the fanbase of rick and morty is pure cringe.

Cringe is what makes it hardest to engage with fellow fans of a show or hobby. Cringe cannot be overlooked, it cannot be gotten used to. It always makes one feel uncomfortable.

Despite the show being unbelievably terrible, the Big Bang Theory fandom actually manages to make the show even worse.

Anytime someone says that show is smart, I rage inside.

Started as such, sure, but it's naive to think that some - probably most - aren't playing it completely straight nowadays.
I like to think most of the serious ones are trolling, I used to post in PCMR reddit as did my friend and we indulged in some of that stuff too, it was 100% facetious and it felt like it was to most of the people there too.

Breaking Bad fandom is the worst. I like it but omg. It's not that great.

Say what? That show was phenomenal and this is me saying this after seeing the whole thing way after it ended and not following that hype train.

Anytime someone says that show is smart, I rage inside.
Oh god, can't forget that show and them too.

Well, you'd be more of an expert than me, then. I'll try to have a more charitable mindset the next time I'm in those parts, lol.

Every fandom I've ever stepped foot in? Fandom = collective of fans, fans = fanatics. For most people that just means you enjoy something a lot, but for others they are literally fanatics. And that will be true for any fandom. Seriously, most things can be enjoyed in solitude away from the larger fandom.

Im still a Star Wars Fan ,but lately these days i tend to avoid other internet dicsussions of Star wars . Mostly becuase it always boils down to "Prequels Suck" etc which gets annoying and tiring since it happens SO DAMN OFTEN. Ive never seem a fandom so obsessed with movies they dislike . Generally other fandoms would just not speak of movies they dislike but not Star wars fans ,some act as if the Prequels killed thier dogs .its unhealthy (and in case anyone asks i actually dont mind the prequels at all ,expect Ep 2...i cant defend that at all

Edit : Also some of the Dark souls fandom sadly turned me off the games during that period where they wanted every game to be dark souls (especially annoying when you see people constantly wanting Zelda games to play like souls and not be its own thing)

If it's a product I'm enjoying, then none. Nobody is forcing you to engage with the fandom. That's your choice.

The only ones I can actively say have ever annoyed me are the community/parks/office/similar shows crowd. The only reason for that is the constant inside joke gifs being posted in unrelated topics back in the day. All that did was slow my page load and contribute to noise.

No, because I can separate media from its fandoms.

I think I've settled on this after awhile. If anything I ignore shows not due to their fans but the massive hype (more often than not that leads to disappointment) they have. And I usually come back and watch/play it later once that subsides.

If I avoided things due to their fanbases I'd miss out on so many good pieces of media.

I was the same as you op. Then i watched it but didn't tell people that were heavily into it about it because I didn't want to deal with the inside jokes and what not. It's an enjoyable show.

Can't think of a single one. As mentioned by others already: I consume what I consume and just by generally keeping to myself I manage to avoid fandoms. I know many things I enjoy have toxic fandoms but I condemn them and go back to enjoying the thing. Now if that toxicity comes from the creators of the thing, then it gets more complicated.

Every fandom.

I like things, but I never interact with obsessive fans.
I will talk to you about sensible things, but if you start mentioning OC's, fanfics or shipping or whatever I'm out.

A fandom has never driven me away from any show, game or movie. I think its cute that people get hyped up over their favorite pieces of media. But that szechuan sauce stuff did make me look at Rick and Morty fans sideways.

Absolutely. I like the Szechuan joke but I'm struggling to even imagine how anything from Rick and Morty becomes a personal touchstone so deep that I'd change my life around it. Making fanart? Fine. Cosplay? Fine. Buy merch? Fine. Visit studios or landmarks? Fine. Publicly wasting my time or openly embarrassing myself for a piece of media? Count me out.

Rick and Morty
Steven Universe
Undertale
Night in the Woods
Adventure Time

There's a bunch more too. I don't particularly have issues with fandoms, I just think those are the ones that I'm interested in or have had interest in but the more fanatical fans drive me away from wanting to even talk about it. Like, second hand embarrassment levels of bad.

That being said, I know without a doubt there are people who love stuff in my list who are cool, I'm not attacking anyone who is a fan, more just what I've seen from the communities at large.

While I'm able to separate content from its fanbase, a terrible fandom makes me far more likely to not partake until the hype has long worn off. A particular person I know gets -way- into fandom stuff and I can generally tell when it's safe to approach something by their tastes changing to something else.

Undertale
Steven Universe
Cuphead
Demons Souls
Dark Souls
Bloodborne
Adventure Time (which is arguably the worst in this regard because the fanbase directly influenced the course of the show on several occasions)

All fandoms are garbagio so it's nice that nobody ever has to engage with them. I legit don't understand the process outlined by some posters here where they wanted to consume a particular piece of entertainment but the respective fandom scared them away? Like at which point between growing interest in a show and hitting up your streaming service of choice do you ever cross into fandom territory?

I remember the anime fans from middle school and high school made me never want to get near the shows or give them a chance.

Like to be honest, this. It's getting old. It's coming off as pretentious to me in a way. In a way of "These bad fans suck soooo much, I'm glad I'm a good fan" and people sort of patting themselves for not being an idiot.

Star Wars fans try their hardest. I just have to remember to avoid all discussion. Goes for anything with an annoying fanbase.

Douglas Adams fans. His work is good and funny but I've heard all of his jokes butchered and repeated ad nauseum for nearly twenty years now that I can't get around to reading any more of his stuff.

Well I assume all fanbases has good and bad things going. I just ignore the things I dont agree with and enjoy my own life instead.

I guess toxic fanbases in online games often keep me away from solo queing, CSGO, Dota2 etc. But as soon you find friends to play with they are great.

People not able to keep a civiliced open discussion over their own stubborn views and obsessions hyperbole (Star Wars-fans, Family GUy vs Simpsons.. :D ) can be frustrating but its just an individual flaw, not a definition of the fanbase.

If there's one thing I've learned from the internet, it's that all fandoms are inherently shit. It just takes one idiot to ruin it for everyone, and even if the product itself is against their actions, they won't listen to what the product is saying and be terrible anyway.
Instead of looking at the fandoms, you need to look at where the bad stuff is actually happening. Good moderation can make or break a community, and a lot of the notorious events on the internet that shame a fandom forever, happen in the same places.

I never understood this, watching a show doesn't automatically mean you are now apart of the toxic portion of the fan base. You don't even have to tell people you enjoy the show, just watch and enjoy it quietly to yourself if you worry about being lumped into the toxic base. Just treat it like porn, doors locked and sound on low if you're that worried what people think of you.

Korean pop. Male fans of girl groups especially seem very defensive and almost ignorant of the rampant and honestly disgusting sexualization happening.

I don't know how some of y'all can avoid a particular brand or show without giving it a shot. Life is too short for me to give a shit about fanbases.
