A little backstory: YouTuber PatMac, best known for making excellent videos about a variety of video game merchandise, recently put out an massive video detailing the history of Sonic Runners and its updates.

For those who don't want to watch an hour-plus rundown, Runners was a high-score focused mobile endless runner created by Sonic Team themselves with some great looking visuals, an amazing Tomoya Ohtani soundtrack, and an incredible amount of fanservice with a huge cast of playable characters (including truly obscure picks like Tikal from Sonic Adventure and Mephiles the Dark from Sonic 06) and an even larger amount of "Buddies" that you could take along on your runs to give you special boosts and skills. You could bring characters like Caliburn, Chip, Shahra, Chaos 0, Opa-Opa, NiGHTS and Reala, a Sega Genesis... you could even have the massive Death Egg float behind you.

Unfortunately, absolutely terrible F2P monetization that made it absurdly difficult to actually get many of those characters and buddies as well as a deeply questionable 2.0 update left fans cold, leading to the game being deemed a failure by Sega and shut down just one year after its official launch - and due to the game being always-online, it is now completely unplayable. While a sequel (Sonic Runners Adventure) was later cobbled together by Gameloft from the remains of Runners as a paid mobile game, its significantly smaller amount of playable characters and buddies as well as its inferior visuals and music simply left fans wondering what could have been.

Luckily, it seems the renewed interest in Runners caused by PatMac's video has had an effect. Previously there was an short-lived attempt at reviving Runners through a fan server, but the lone person behind it (YPwn) was unable to keep it going for more than a month due to server costs and lack of interest. However, the surge of support from Runners fans after PatMac's retrospective has led to a second effort from YPwn and a team of volunteers to bring the game back once again (sans any form of monetization to ward off potential DMCAs). While there's even potential for adding new content, the focus is on getting the game working and improving the unlock methods for characters.

It's currently in closed alpha, but it's looking like Sonic Runners may yet get a new lease on life. Given that Runners is easily the most notable Sonic game that's entirely unplayable today, this is great news for Sonic fans should it pan out.

Sonic Runners dying was the event that made me give up on mobile gaming entirely.

A valiant effort, but it's too late for me.

I don't think it's that good of a game to warrant such an endeavor, but your OP had some really good points in that it did a great job celebrating Sonic's history, something that it has felt as though Modern Sonic has been rejecting his past two games.

Hope the next Sonic game takes notes in regards to this aspect.

Sonic Runners was an amazing game ruined by shitty microtransactions. I hope this revival works. Stuff like Club Penguin Rewritten and Toontown Rewritten is great.

Never underestimate what Sonic fans will go to great lengths to preserve. See: SegaSonic Popcorn Shop, Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car, SegaSonic Bros., etc.

And yeah, it was nice to see a game with fanservice for ALL eras of Sonic. Seems like these days they're afraid to acknowledge anything post-Heroes or pre-Colors.

Heck, even post-Sonic & Knuckles games only go as far as to acknowledge these entries' music and nothing else. A lot of these games were flawed, but they still had great content in them that should be recognized.

There's Sonic Runners Adventure available on iOS/Android that plays almost the same as the original Runners.

Would this fan server be able to run on iOS again? I had it installed for a time but just realized it disappeared!

Honestly I was pissed off that Sonic Team effort was being wasted to work on a mobile Sonic game, when they could have least made a decent handheld Sonic game for the 3DS.

Had fun with the game at launch, but all the monetization really left a sour taste in my mouth. Might be fun to revisit without all that in there.

Runners Adventure is actually pretty different from Runners. I don't think it's terrible but it's not really a replacement for the original. Some major ways it departs from the previous game:

• Adventure is level based with stages that have set end points and task you with completing three challenges in each one, whereas Runners was strictly an infinite runner where you collected gems to increase your score.

• There are only 9 characters and 11 buddies in Adventure compared to Runners' 29 characters and 94 buddies.

• The visual style with bold outlines is totally gone, leading to a overall less pleasing aesthetic.

• Windy Hill and Sky Road from Runners have been replaced by Green Hill and Sky Sanctuary, complete with recycled music from their appearance in Generations instead of using Beyond the Speed Of... and Fly Away.

• Adventure is completely offline with no multiplayer component. In contrast, high-score chasing and leaderboards were a major aspect of Runners.

Would this fan server be able to run on iOS again? I had it installed for a time but just realized it disappeared!

They're working on both Android and iOS versions.

Yeah. I remember having some enjoyment with the game until they started to screw around with the ranking system from several updates and I dropped it. The gatcha rates were pretty bad too. At least the music was great:

Yeah the music is really great, I don't buy too many soundtracks on iTunes but I had to get Vol. 1 and 2 of the Sonic Runners OST. I love that little extra piano bit at 1:58 of Power Ride. Of course, we can't have those two tracks without rounding out the trilogy!

This video seemed like it could be interesting but I'm baffled it's over an hour long and the guy is dropping the most absurd hyperbole on how good the game is in the opening sequence. Like, I briefly played it, and it was passable, but even with all the character references and without the monetization, it was still just a passable, overly busy typical time waster mobile game. I'm skeptical the core gameplay design was really that good, underneath all the good and bad fluff.

It's over an hour because he discusses literally every update and event the game ever had at length.

As for the praise, yeah it's probably a little hyperbolic and tinged with nostalgia for a dead game but Runners was still legitimately fun beneath all the clutter so I see no reason to rain on his enthusiasm. The Discord for the revival project is approaching 1000 members in its first day, so there are definitely a lot of people out there itching to play it again as well.

This was how I felt, I actually skipped through a lot of the video. He praises it like it's the second coming of Sonic in general. I like Sonic game, I played them growing up, but I'm not part of the "fanbase" and I honestly tried this game and thought "meh" it was alright. Mania was more what I like.

It kind of feels like too much of a focus on having the most characters & references, and obsessing about the art design, like Sonic now has this identity crisis with, instead of focusing on the core gameplay, like efforts like Sonic Mania and Utopia have done. Fans are distracted by "shiny things", and so is Sonic Team, which is why the core of Sonic just stays unfixed.

Anyway, sorry, don't really want to make this a hater thread. It's true it's impressive they've managed what they have and I can only wish good luck in keeping "dead" games online in some form.

It was pretty fun, but not fun enough to keep my interest. Definitely one of Sonic Team's better games in the last decade, and one of the better runner games out there though. I don't think I'd be interested in a private server but it's neat that some people are doing it.

I'm not a mobile gamer and really not an endless runner fan, so in that sense this thread has taught me if I ever try a mobile Sonic anyway then it's bound to be Sonic Runners Adventure. I think I downloaded Runners once around the time it came out, played for like ten minutes, and uninstalled.

But that's besides the point; clearly this game has a passionate fanbase and it's awesome to see them working together like this. I wish them the best. I look forward to hearing future updates on this!

Its nut that this game made 35k a month for Sega despite the awful monetization and yet still got shut down.

Meanwhile both versions of Sonic Dash somehow sustained themselves?

This is interesting to me because I always wonder about preservation of mobile games, and didn't know private servers for individual titles were a thing for these. That's super neat.

But isn't this pretty much taking Sega's game? That's a bit different, I'd think.

At this point it's not really "taking it" so much as "restoring access to it". We've seen other shuttered online games like Club Penguin and Toontown get fan servers without retribution from a massive C&D hungry corporation like Disney, so hopefully this will be a similar situation.

I'd guess that Sonic Team was counting on this being more profitable (or leading to a more profitable series of mobile Sonic games) than the 3DS ports. I will agree that it's disappointing seeing the 3DS ports being obvious ports/cash-grabs instead of original games. I wouldn't even mind the 3DS games being based on console games, but they seem so obviously smaller-scaled than the console ones, like being small because they were time/money budgeted that way instead of just being small for the portableness.
They're working on both Android and iOS versions.
iOS is for jailbroken devices, right? I don't think iOS has non-store-loading for apps otherwise.

They said they're "exploring the possibility of a non-jailbreak solution using either cydia injector or the certificate method", but the current method they're using requires a jailbroken device.

Update from the Discord server: thanks to a Sega employee who took notice of the project and brought it up with their superiors, it's been confirmed that the team's efforts are A-OK as long as they include no microtransactions and don't claim to own any assets.

That's very cool. I know Sega's typically been cool with fan stuff, but it's nice to know for sure that they're allowing this to continue.

Definitely want to give the game a try once it's possible.

Awesome.
I'm guessing the microtransactions buttons will be replaced if possible by the team with something to automatically gives out the old premium currency or something?

I believe the plan is to make red rings easier to obtain and to lower the cost of things that cost red rings so there will still be some unlocking and progression.

That's awesome and a massive relief from Sega that they won't interfere. But it does make me wonder why Sega doesn't let Sonic Team clean up the title to work as an offline release and charge $5 for it or something. I would gladly plunk down the cash for it.
