Looks like launch week is bigger than Assassins Creed 3, smaller than The Division.

Possibly on track to be the second biggest launch for any Ubisoft game ever.

Assassins Creed 3 sold 3.5 million units WW launch week. I fully expect Far Cry 5 to be ahead of that
That shit is insane..

Totally deserved. Game is amazing and beautiful.

Well deserved. Far Cry 5 is incredibly engaging and fun to play - a true open world playground. I like this game as much as I hate the dumpster fire of level gated repetitiveness that is AC:O.

Ok, thanks. I followed the source and it's a ZhugeEX tweet, so thanks to Daniel Ahmad as well.

Edit: Hmm, why will the tweet not embed? Here's the image source instead.

Damn, it seems like this gen breaking records for all sorts of franchises isn't it in the UK?
Far Cry best debut
Uncharted best debut
3D Mario best debut
Zelda best debut
Pokémon best debut
With new IPS such as The Division, For Honor, Wildlands, Horizon Zero Dawn, Bloodbourne, Splatoon, and ARMS killing it.
Sheesh
God of War will probably have its best debut worldwide too.
Sony, Ubisoft, and Nintendo making bank lol
GoW will sell a tonne in the UK, and WW.

Far Cry 5 (All Formats) ~ 200,000-210,000 units

I don't think I am missing another Ubisoft title that may have sold more than the top 5 I posted.

A reminder that packaged sales no longer show the full picture anymore.

The actual total including digital sales on all platforms is close to double that.

In other words, the opening for Far Cry 5 was huge in the UK. Bigger than quite a number of AAA games.

PC sales might be close to 1 million, and i think on Steam, FC5 is the fastest selling SP UBISOFT game. IIRC The Division is still the fastest selling Ubisoft game on Steam.

Absolutely incredible start.

Ubisoft are straight up the most impressive publisher this generation imo. The number of different IP they've been able to turn into success stories is 2nd to none. Sure they may not have the individual monster like a CoD or a GTA, but the fact they've been able to juggle so many franchises to such success is crazy.

Props to Yves, he's a hell of a CEO

It's pretty insane to think this game is doing so well.

I knew it would sell well, but not THIS well. Ubi have grown a ton this past gen.

I'm happy to see so much growth for Ubisoft this gen and with new IP as well. The best out of the AAA publishers. All praise to Yvesus!

Great news, good for Ubisoft

So, it might be 11-14,000 units for 2nd week. Ouch

If the opening week was roughly 22K and the following week saw a drop of 52% drop. Then Gamepass or not, 33K in two weeks at retail, is a disaster. And those twitch views (still a very weird metric imo) dropped to below 20K last time I looked.

I got the game via a free trial so I'm interested in how March NPD will contrast with Greenbergs tweets.

If you said it's a disaster at retail only, then fair enough.

But when Microsoft's whole goal is to increase game pass subscribers then your comment makes no sense at all.

They have the best marketing team in the entire industry. Bar none. Nobody can compare with Ubi on this front in terms of consistent performance.
I am sorry but only a marketeer in profession could come with ...marketing as the reason that lately ubi gets praise -and apparently- sales.

their games are good, they have a good quality within the game. that's what counts, and marketing is good only to supplement, not to create.

I feel that is incredibly unfair. This game was not greenlit with gamepass in mind. Gamepass as a service is still in its very early stages and one big release isn't really a measure of it's success yet, especially with the free trial option.

No sorry dude. Ubisoft knows it's markets INCREDIBLY well. It's games are good but they sell because of 2 things. Content and marketing.

ZhugeEX is absolutely correct in regards to Sea of Thieves

Also while the marketing team for Ubisoft is indeed fantastic they aren't the real MVP's. The market research team they have in place are the real secret stars there. 2nd to none imo

I was more talking about their "game pass or not" qualifier. Which didn't need to be in the sentence.

To most people, that's the same thing. But Yeah, I totally agree. It's not just the marketing, it's knowing to a T who to market to and how to market to them.

Game Pass has been out for a year but I hear 93% of Xbox users waited to use the 14 day free trial for Sea of Thieves, think they might use it again for State of Decay 2 and Crackdown 3.

Microsoft had been planning a variant of what is now game pass for years, the Xbox One has the 360 Bc hardware in it because they were planning on doing something with 360 games as part of a service, Fable Legends was intended to be part of a service.
I don't belive that game pass was simply and idea someone came up with in order to combat the flagging Xbox On sales, it had been on the cards for a number of years. I suspect that game pass had existed as a concept prior to Sea of Thieves

Are you saying that me getting the game for free is better than me purchasing the game at retail? To be clear I did stipulate that 33K at retail was an absolute disaster. But as a UK gamer whose online PSN/XBL friends are mainly from the EU, from what they tell me, SOT didn't register any other EU country. Now obviously that's anecdotal evidence and I'm not a numbers guy, but I trust what I've been told. So I'm wondering how does Gamepass help in that situation? Was SOT 100% digital?

To me Gamepass stats are an obfuscation, a blatant attempt to hide from XBOX's retail reality. Greenbergs tweets and Microsoft's PR surrounding this IP is something many take as testament to that fact.

I firmly believe that NPD will be a PR nightmare for them because of what many gamers take to be purposely misleading statements about the games success. But we'll have to wait and see.

That doesn't change the fact that Sea of thevies was not greenlit as part of that model, nor was it marketed as such.

There is a massive jump of logic to think a service that was going to include BC titles and F2p games was also envisioned to also carry 3rd party AAA titles, Indies and Day one first party AAA GaaS titles.

There are so many different profit and value propositions in Gamepass it's very hard to see it at anything but a catch all service to take advantage of Microsoft's biggest strength this gen.

Well that would explain why you have a wholly incorrect view or understanding of their business model and strategy

This is bordering on conspiracy theory nonsense tbh. Game pass is designed as games distribution method to boost revenues for the company. Not as a way to obfuscate anything. Nor is Microsoft's PR purposefully misleading.

I'd knock off this console warrior attitude.

I'd imagine there will be high conversion rates too. But that still means the jury is still very much out on how successul sea of thevies actually was. It very may well be only the tester that gets the user hooked on that digital crack. Or it could just be people taking advantage of "free" shit.

What is probably the biggest advantage of SOTs success on gamepass for Microsoft is the Amazon model. Get people to put their credit card details on your store with a free trial, then they are more likely to keep it on file to buy more shit. Hell, they might even pay for a month or two of gamepass before they remember to cancel. That may be more than enough to make Microsoft happy.

first of all dont mix things, as content has absolutely nothing to do with marketing.
then, if you boot far cry 5, you will witness a beautifuly crated world, very large, that looks ace and plays really well, and given its large scope, you can see it has been carefully combed for bugs etc too. complex stuff.

now guess one more time: Marketing has absolutely zero part in any of the above things.
you want to put up a case where all of the above -and lots of other stuff that are close to game development- are in the back seat while some marketing teams, interior and exterior are responsible for the success? fine, but imo you are seeing things through a very specifically painted binoculars

The game was revealed 3 years ago. It was greenlit 4 years ago. If gamepass was a thing in its current format 4 years ago, it's tantamount to incompetence for it to have taken so long to implement.

Yes, that is what I just said.
Except the incompetence part, I suspect the implementation and creation of something so paradigm shifting, with the foresight to make sure it's future proofed to at least some extent is a far more difficult task than say, letting users change their usernames...

Unless you work for another global technology provider who works in the consumer entertainment network space, I don't think that you'll really have any idea as to just how simple something is to implement.

Also, is it not a sensible part of planning that you would be planning the content for your service BEFORE it is actually finished?

I mean, they will be working on next gen hardware and software right now, because you know, things take time to make. Marketing windows come and go and large companies ebb and flow with their thinking and direction.

The reality is when people either drops after the 14 day or keeps it. We don't know that yet. I tend to think positive and I think GP will pick up quite a few subs from SoT.

Look. Hold on to that carrot if you want. I'm going to need something a bit more concrete than "I think gamepass was the plan all along because of BC".
