I had similar concerns while playing Act 2 and particularly Act 3. Far too much skiffing back and forth in boring, featureless plains. It felt like artificial padding and as if The Coalition were checking the 'open world' box in the misguided belief that this is how Gears needs to stay relevant in 2019. Thankfully Act 1 and 4 were classic Gears, but at less than half the campaign it points to a worrying direction for the future of the franchise.
See, you made an excellent point on me being wrong and maybe I'll check that shit out in the future since I'm way too invested in the MP right now, but we'll just agree to disagree on controlling the glider. I hated it instantly and kept smashing myself on the walls left and right, so maybe that will be the "hard" part of getting through with that. :)
I took very wide turns and got distracted by the Del and Kait chatter. Here's hoping I'm never a game reviewer.Lol yea both maps are basically wide open canyons, you'd have to try to slam into walls Tbh.

And who are you to dictate that lol? Some people were hating on BOTW before it released, it turned out to be one of the best games ever. There is absolutely no reason for a Gears of War game to ever have anything resembling an open world. It makes no sense.
The boat stuff, especially your first time through, bloats the total playtime and part of me wonders if that wasn't intentional. To be clear, I think GoW PS4 is one of gaming's best titles. That said, having all these little side areas, often ones where you can progress after a small fight then find out you don't have the necessary item/ability to finish it and must yet again trudge back to your boat, start back up the mp3 clip of your previous conversation with Atreus, and wander back around the lake started to feel really tedious to me. I'm actually curious how much of my playtime was spent around that lake not doing much at all...I recently beat God of War. The lake is a really cool idea progression-wise, but fucking around with that little boat all the time made it so tedious, and made the open world aspect of the game really annoying. I kinda hope this trend of putting open world elements in originally linear games dies off...
Burnout Paradise, no other game that jumped to open world comes even close to killing my interest like BP did.Feel free to joke away at my expense, but to the ones still reading this, is there any game that you lost interest almost immediately after it went open world? I know I hated The Evil Within 2 because of it and I have no intention to ever finish it because of this.
I had the same fears but after playing it I'm fine with it. If you choose you can more or less make it a linear experience, just ignore everything else.
So what's the point of having them? The open area on Lost Legacy is the one reason stopping me having a second run-through. If it's linear anyway, just make it linear like a normal level.
Caveat: I haven't reached an open level yet, so I might even enjoy it.

It's ironic because the point of open worlds is player volition - play how you want, what you want, where you want, at the pace you want - but that it often leads to choice paralysis /content completion FOMO.Even if there's "nothing for me to fear (lol)" or that I can go from point a-to-b, I just can't help but thinking I'm playing this shit wrong or YOU MUST GO 100% ON THIS YOU IDIOT, but it's more of a problem I have with myself rather than the game being bad.
I just know that I sold God of War PS4 as soon as I finished the damn thing, because I know I missed a lot of stuff on the map and never wanted to go through the "oh shit I'm sure I missed important upgrades and collectibles" ever again.
Too bad Gears 5 also some overly long and uninteresting cutscenes. And loading times. And forced slow walking sections. Pacing is off just to reach that 10+ hours mark for the campaign.I'd rather ride the skiff than look at a cutscene/loading screen 🤷‍♂️

The open world segment is really just a small hub with little optional combat encounters. Talk about overreaction.
The perception of a game's features is ultimately what matters most. It may functionally be a very similar experience to past Gears games, but it coming across as now being "open world" will make agoraphobic (agamaphobic?) players react this way. Most bizarre thread of the year, to me.
Maybe if was microtransactions. Maybe if was a pay to win feature. But one section ruined everything? Yo, chill.
