During the presentation, an officer who spent 28 years with the department questioned a statistic presented at the conference, that members of the transgender community are 3.32 times more likely to be the victim of police violence than non-transgender people, according to WRTV. The statistic comes from the 2012 annual report from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs, which describes itself as an advocacy group for “local LGBTQ communities.”

“My wife has never been part of police violence,” he said. “Most of the people that I know have never been, accused the police of violence. So I guess I don’t get where that statistic comes from.”

“‘Cause your white male privilege, so you wouldn’t know” said a woman’s voice. The woman was identified as Weber

“I was racially and sexistly slurred by Captain Carri Weber while I was asking a question of the instructor in training,” the officer wrote in the complaint. “I am now firmly aware of the discriminatory belief she just verbally communicated.

… There is no place in the Plainfield Police administration or supervision for someone who holds and espouses her discriminatory views.”

Weber was placed on administrative leave on Nov. 16.
I feel that the conversation was abridged but assuming it wasn't what would-be the optimal way to get her point across to people not used to being challenged like this?

Capt. Carri Weber was placed on administrative leave not long after she made the remarks on Nov. 1, according to Deputy Town Manager Tony Perona. This was the third instance in four months of her behavior drawing scrutiny from her supervisors.

Weber was expected to appear before the Board of Police Commissions Thursday night as commission members considered potential discipline.

Members of the commission began the meeting shortly after 6 p.m. before excusing themselves to another room to hold an executive session.

A statement released after the session said she would be reinstated to her current position. She also was reprimanded.
Just a snippet of the article.

Some of the other details about her seems to imply that she has some more deep rooted issues with cops, or the current culture.

Might explain why her response was so aggressive the the comment.

"I was racially and sexistly slurred by Captain Carri Weber"

get the hell out of here, you weak-ass fuckboi

lol it's hilarious how these white men are hypocrites; they'd be the first to tell a minority to stop feeling so offended by some racist or sexist remark

The video of him losing his shit would be hilarious if it wasn't so fucking disgusting.

The fragility is real.

Her argument wasn't very concise but he definitely overreacted and got super in his feelings about it. He should have just asked her to explain her point. Not get her fired.

Also hilarious that that's what it takes to get fired from the police force instead of killing unarmed black men for misdemeanors and petty crime while posing no direct threat to them.......buuuuuut I guess that's how it be.

This makes me so mad.

Nothing would be done if the situation were reversed.

She didn't deserve this.

That says it all when it comes how people will handwave bigotry, especially institutionalized

So killing unarmed black men is fine but questioning a well established position white men exist in constitutes a suspension. Riiiiiiight

I feel like a lot of people view "white" as an ethnic slur.

I imagine a lot of them would still view "black", "brown" and the like as descriptors.

It's not acceptable what she said and she should be reprimanded in some way but suspension is way too severe.

He's proving her point though...
I probably wouldn't have said it myself (or used way less-known inflammatory language or triggering words), but I don't think she deserved a suspension either.

And for real, this is probably the most racist and sexist thing that cop has technically experienced.

I find her comment unnecessarily racist/sexist to someone asking a genuine question (albeit one which demonstrates naivety living in a sheltered environment), but given it was mild and she had a good service record a simple reprimand would seem sufficient. If she's looking to educate someone or change opinions, you don't achieve it by insulting them.

No, what she said is the truth. Because he's a cis white guy, he has the privilege of never having to notice the reality of that statistic. Do you think that someone who is trans has that same privilege?

Is his wife transgender? Cause if not what he said was incredibly stupid, actually it would still be stupid even if she was.

those comments might have been uncouth, non-tactful, but they were anything but racist or sexist. Slapping that label on them is pretty ironic and counterproductive. Especially given that we KNOW what he said.

Going out on a limb here...

There was nothing racist/sexist about her comment.

White male privilege is exactly why he said this ignorant shit he did, and he should be called out for it.

The officer may already have been on thin ice, given this little tidbit conveniently ignored by the OP:

Weber was placed on administrative leave on Nov. 16. She was previously suspended in August for violating a department policy by driving her squad car within eight hours of drinking alcohol and for having alcohol in her squad car.

I don't disagree his statement is ignorant but you're not gonna change peoples mind by shitting on them.

She could have elaborated more, but what she said was basically a direct response.

1: The statistic from the National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs was presented.
2: The officer who makes the complaint casts doubt on the statistic because he had never personally seen it.
3: She explains that he has not personally seen it because of white male privilege, which means that he has no skin in this particular game which would require him to notice.

It's not an insult. It's stating why there's an incongruence between his perception and the statistic. She was not saying "shut up whitey".

But wouldn't you agree his reaction and the reaction of their superiors isn't surprising? We need people like her getting the point across while keeping their jobs secure.
I couldn't have sat there and listened to his white privilege fulled ignorance without calling it, not sure I'm the best person to ask the question.

She didn't shit on him, lol.

White male cops have fragile egos in spite of their outward machismo and bullshit? Who would've thought.

And cops wonder why more and more people hate them every day.
