RALEIGH, N.C. — A female wrestler has made history by winning a state high school wrestling championship in North Carolina.

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association said on its website that junior Heaven Fitch of Uwharrie Charter became the first female to win one of the association’s individual state wrestling championships. She won the 106 pound (48 kg) weight class at the 1A division on Saturday.

You go, girl!

Haha she fights like a girl!

And kicks fucking ass in the process!

Amazing story. Hope to see more of these kinds of stories going forward in other male dominated sports.

Niiice, look at that smile! Hope the other guys are more upset having not won themselves as opposed to 'hur dur you lost against a girl!?' reasons.

The faces on those boys are ridiculous. Embarrassing actually. And she looks so happy and proud. Wonderful!

Always cool to see, we had some excellent female wrestlers in my division when I wrestled in high school.

About the boys not smiling, it's probably not that a girl won, but that they didn't take first. Wrestling being such a singular sport, it feels pretty terrible when you lose.

EDIT 2: I feel like a bit of a prick, as in general I'm try very hard not to contribute to the shittier bits of the internet. I thought a snarky thing, posted it, shouldn't have. Don't really know what came over me. They're teenagers, who the fuck am I to guess as to why they're pissed off.

I won't recant how pleased I am with how happy she looks, though.

That picture IS pretty funny, the contrast between her and the rest, but the boy's faces aren't because they lost to her but because it's the culture around boys sports. Hell, it's the culture in any physical competition.

This is such a great story.

Had to Google this and see if it was Jon Fitch's daughter (doesn't appear to be).

Yeah people pointing out about the boys' glum faces in the picture; very common/basically encouraged to not smile in extracurricular sports pictures as you're supposed to seem "tough".
From what I remember, even girls did it in their basketball pictures in my high school. Definitely the boys though, as even at that age I thought it was lame.

OT: That's awesome. Hopefully we see more of it in the future!

When I wrestled in high school we absolutely tried our hardest to look like scary badasses at all times. Very funny in retrospect. We actually had one girl on our team, and everyone thought it was awesome—this was over 20 years ago. No one had a problem with being beaten by her.

But yeah the champs big grin is definitely an anomaly. The dudes aren’t being weird about her win.

I don't think I smiled for many photos as a kid either. Or a teen now that I think about it.

Or now. I just hate taking photos. /grumpyoldman

You should edit this or at least reply with an apology. That's unacceptable. Those kids are just trying to win a competition. Imagine if one of them was your kid.
I've edited it. But also: if my son was that pissed off at getting a medal but not winning a thing outright, he's not very sporting, really.

For this girl to pull of that record, at that age, in that division is super goddamn impressive. And she's only a junior! From what I have seen of her, she is has great technique and also a surprising amount of power. She will likely continue to dominate her weight division.

The 130-155lb weight classes were unbelievably hardcore and terrifying to me back in the day. The 135lb guys were actually 145lb dudes that cut weight. They had zero body fat and were pure, lean steel. Those matched were almost always pure strength over technique. Evenly matched guys would revert to endurance and technique. We had our dude who was 100% pure POWER. But if he didn't win the match in the first round, he would tire and lose to anyone that could survive the initial onslaught. Most did not! Personally, I cut from the 110lb weight class to wrestle in the 103lb division and did really well for the single year I participated in the sport. Lighter weight classes were always more fun to watch IMO because instead of pure power there was a lot more technique involved.

Here is my sad story.

I wrestled back in high school in 1991 or 92 and we had a girl in the 140lb weight class that was in our district. The girl was even on Ricky Lake or some other talk show back in the day talking about her wrestling. Every wrestler forfeited instead of wrestling her, so those count as wins for her. She actually made it to the state championships. She wrestled our guy, who was a monster (and an asshole). Everyone thought he had a few screws loose. Anyway, he wrestled her and destroyed her. Our guy was looking up and laughing as he squeezed the life out of her with minimal effort. He would allow her to slowly escape holds just so he could wrap her up in a different one. He could have pinned her at any time, but he drew it out to embarrass her. It was super painful to watch. She *never* should have made it that far. I may be misremembering, but I think every win on her record was from forfeits. I was relieved to see this girl actually wrestles. Furthermore, she looks like she is having fun while doing it.

EDIT: Ahh, alright, it was unfair to suggest that they were overly annoyed with a girl for beating them. They look really, really, really pissed off. More than I would think they should, I must admit - there's got to be an element of sportsmanship to stuff, right? Like, wanting to be pleased that you got a medal at all? I don't know. Probably, yes, I'm reading stuff into things. It's the Jordan Peterson-ness of life these days. Maybe they're just really sore losers instead.

She looks happy, though. That's nice, isn't it.
How about, "I said something shitty about kids with no actual cause or proof, my bad" instead of "OK, I changed it, but here's why actually I was kind of justified, and yeah I'm reading into things, but I'm just going to get one last jab in at the end to feel righteous." Your original comment was so bad that it needed to just be nuked, not kinda-sorta explained.

I didn’t know co-ed teenage wrestling was a thing

wouldn’t the boys be afraid they might, uh, embarrass themselves? And I don’t mean by losing...

edit: i got answers, thank you!
